I’m sure the Padres plan is to lock up Tatis before Lindor,Seager,Correia and Story set the new SS market after this season....or even before.

The Mets could agree to an extension for Lindor before the season starts....and it could affect Tatis’s market.

IF they pay Tatis $40MM/year for seven FA years ... doubt they even considered the 2022 FA prices for the other SS. Would be more than just surprised if any of them hit (or came close) to $40MM.

The new international signing period, I believe, started earlier this month. Have not seen any reports on signings by the Padres (actually be any team). Anyone know the status?

Starts this Friday, January 15.

Thanks.

Could be part of the reason Preller is in the Dominican Republic.

Guessing the Preller is in the Dominican Republic to work on Tatis’ extension and probably finalized any international FA signings. Given the Jan 15th for signings and most rumors on Tatis are the deal still with at least a week before completed (if completed) ... so Preller probably out of pocket for another week.

Then, we are getting close to the date to exchange arbitration figure with the outstanding players ... Padres always settle before arbitration hearings ... so, upon his return that may take his focus to have everyone locked down by early February.

Then getting set-up for ST pitchers and catchers around Feb 17th.

Busy guy ...  but he does not sleep ... so, wonder how active he will be on FA signings / trade discussions between now and then. We really have not heard much on active discussions (just interest) in any of the FA or any new trade rumors.

Does he not see more moves as a priority or is comfortable to attack during ST as the mass of remaining FA start to panic and take the lower offer?

====

One other possibility ... does he have a handshake agreement with a FA or two (thinking maybe Yates) with the contract being signed during ST. Advantage ... in ST they can put Clevinger / Wingenter on the 60 day IL opening a roster slot and avoiding a DFA. Alternatively, gives him more time to make a deal to move a roster player to make the roster space.

Still see a proven RHRP as the #1 need.

Hendriks signs with the CWS for 3 years / $54MM plus and option year ... that is about double the estimate by MLBTR ... and a lot of a RP.

That may break out the RP signings with CWS out of the mix and the #1 RP off the board. Apparently HOUSTON and TORONTO were deeply in on Hendriks, so would expect them to make a quick shifts to the next tier of RP.

That contract as a guide should elevate the price for the others (and there is clearly demand) ... Padres may be out of the race. I guess Yates may be the exception, since we in SD may appreciate him more him more than the rest of the league plus carrying the unknown of the elbow surgery, his market may not be as strong.

Manfred has come out today reiterating that the league plans to go with a full 162 games schedule and ST starting on time. That may accelerate some of the FA movement with ST beginning in 5 weeks.

Should help the relations with the Union (they get full pay) ... basically an "investment" in having a more civil CBA negotiation next winter.

April may be in better shape for attendance (and protection for players) as it appears that the current idea is to accelerate the vaccination protocol to move down the levels and get (potentially) all that want the vaccine get it by April.

I agree, as I was reading this note this morning. I would imagine that this all but puts Rosenthal out of SDs reach. Even if Rosenthal doesnt get the same percentage hike that Hendricks saw, you would have to imagine that he will get at least $10M per season, and with SD already sitting at about $150M give or take, I dont see them adding an additional $10-12M.

Have to hope Yates takes the proverbial SD discount to stay with the Padres.

We have the disadvantage of not really knowing the Padres' flexibility in adding more payroll but whatever that is ... if the Padres have money and were waiting for the market to drop on the FA ...then deploy among RP / one bench option / inning eater SP ... maybe the Hendriks signing signals that a quality RP may be out of their reach and they pivot stronger to the bench option / innings eater SP?

I does look as though the Padres view FA in two camps ... top tier (e.g. Kim or Sugano) who they will find the money to spend and lower tier (e.g. Yates, Profar) that need to fit into their budget without going the "extra" level.
