According to Acee the Padres will be looking to add a Catcher?

This would mean they are not going to use Mejia at the major league level and Campusano obviously will start at AA/AAA if not traded due to his recent off the field issue.

Why have they soured on Mejia so completely?

Or would this move just be for depth and until Mejia hits his way back onto the big league club from AAA?

Need a 3rd C at least for depth (Campusano in minors).   Could go with 3 C's with Nola & potentially Mejia's positional versatility.

I'd like to see Mejia in AAA at least a month to play more & get rolling offensively

You foresee 3 Catchers on the ML roster ?

Maybe if they plan on using Nola at other positions to spell Hosmer etc..

Otherwise I would hate to use the spot for a 3rd Catcher on "this" team while this close.

Yeh, adding another catcher (unless it is really on the cheap) is hard to figure if that takes away money from filling other needs. Maybe they are thinking more along the lines of a insurance policy for ST who could be tucked in AAA .... anything more would seem like a poor financial choice if Nola is going to catch 60% of the time.

You could be right on the “versatility” ripple effect that Nola and Mejia could provide ... got them both a minimum cost. Nola can play 2B/1B to get a break from catching and provide RHH option at those slots .... non-tender Garcia and not need an immediate back-up replacement. Mejia can play 1B/LF /expanded PH duties ... switch-hitter ... non-tender Pham and maybe fill the roster spot with a less costly more flexible OF complementary piece. IF they came up with a catcher that at least has some offensive skills ... RHH ... maybe also an option as a part time 1B.

Without a DH ... positional versatility is likely more important combined with PH skills ... going to give regulars time off during the season or they will get nicked up and be out a game or two ... and Tingler can’t use the DH to “rest” regulars. A 3rd C frees up both Nola and Mejia to cover other spots as needed.

Doubt the marijuana incident will have the Padres over react about Campusano’s future in the system .... but always thought with his high ceiling as a catcher he needed another full season in the minors (remember only cleared A+) and get worked a regular 140 game season. (Also, believe only a very remote chance the penalty in GA will get in the way of a 2021 season).

=====

Now we should remember that this Acee .... and Preller is looking to add at every position ... so the seriousness and intensity of this quest might be looked at with a grain of salt. Stumble on the right fit at a bargain price ... yes.

I commented on the possibility of a 3rd catcher in the 2021 Pre-Planning thread as a way to both maximize Nola's and Mejia's versatility and to give them sufficient rest over a 162 game season.  Assuming no DH in the NL, you need pinch-hitters besides position versatility during a game.  Many fans don't believe in Mejia but his track record and what analysts like Ben Davey are saying indicate that the hit tool is there and I personally have observed that the defense is much improved at catcher.  I believe there should be many opportunities to add a relatively inexpensive catcher in the off-season that will be an important bench piece until the Campusano situation is cleared up.

Dylan Colman (RHP, 21, A-ball) sent to KC to complete Rosenthal trade

Julio Perez (OF, 19, Rookie ball) sent to OAK to complete Mateo trade

Seems fair ... never like to lose prospects but neither have been billed as high ceiling types and both are a long way off. Price to win now.

Apparently the idea that Ornelas was going to be a PTNL did not materialize ... so the Padres hold on to a legit prospect.

It will be interesting to see if the Padres now choose to protect him in Rule 5. Two open slots and a number of options for DFA IF they want to protect more than two.

Hard to strategize the need for roster spots going forward for FA signings and/or non-roster adds. Protecting too many "prospects" that will not benefit 2021 could put them in a position make moves that are sub-optimal in later before ST ending.

Actually Dylan Coleman is a 24 years old, former 4th round pick in 2018, while many thought highly of him because of his mid to upper 90 mph fastball, he never really was able to find himself as a starter or relief pitcher. Not sure he has ever been 100% healthy.  Seems like a good move for him personally as he pitched at Missouri St and is a Missouri native.

Right. Coleman and health issues and command issues but many liked his stuff. Last I heard he was being projected as a RP.

Coleman was not a ranked prospect, but was rated Top 100 draft prospect (#84) by BA in 2018 when he was drafted in 4th round (#111) by Padres.  Last I/we heard, Coleman had suffered a pretty dramatic velocity drop.  Pretty decent "afterthought" 2nd piece of trade.  Olivares was the main piece that stings, b/c he likely could've filled the RH 4th OF/CF role for cheap.

But Perez, known as "Junior" Perez was the 'consensus' #34 best prospect entering 2020.  With all the trades out & graduations this year, MLB.com had him as #16 now in our much less deep system.  I would probably have him lower, below #20, but definitely Top 30.  So he is a legit prospect; one of our very few pure power corner OF prospects.

One of our only other guys in that category is the only pre-2020 Top 40 consensus prospect not: on 40-man roster, with Padres in playoff pool, or playing in the developmental league or Internationally:   #25  Joshua Mears.

This excludes 25 yr old Jake Nix (#38) also not currently playing.

That was my idea, and I'm glad it wasn't him.  Despite his rough 2019, he is a legit prospect, and definitely prefer him over Junior Perez.   Close call between same age "room to grow" Perez & taller/much bigger Joshua Mears.  Might have leaned toward Perez' more athletic current build, but Preller etc know better, and paid Mears 1 MM bonus vs 300K to Perez.

In a "normal" year I would say "no way" on protecting Ornelas, but combo of covid/$$ crunch/ and all our OF trades I'd say he's definitely on the bubble as a possible "protect".  He's really the most advanced OF prospect behind Jorge Ona, and maybe the only guy in system you can project as a possible backup/down the road replacement @ 1B.

But he would join Tucupita Marcano (highly likely), Reggie Lawson (<Marcano, but > Ornelas), and Anderson Espinoza (40-man) as the 4th guy on a 40-man roster who is not going to play in MLB in 2021, and there might be another name or 2 under consideration (Mason Thompson?).  Yes, Lawson would start on IL, but will eventually rehab & be optioned down (if project him for IL all season, I wouldn't protect him).  That leaves only 10 guys (36 -26 man active?)as depth all season.  We will have the roster room for FA's, ST, etc.  I'm more worried about being forced to DFA someone you don't want to b/c you have to fill an injury at a specific thin position over a long season.

On the other hand, the finanical impact of Covid is massive, and I could see multiple bottom third teams under payroll pressure making multiple Rule 5 selections this year simply to build their Farm a little in meaningless/developmental for them season while holding down costs.  In other words, all things being even (quality of players available in R5), think more guys might get taken in Rule 5 than "normal".  Especially if back to only 10 playoff teams in 2021.

Would Preller even consider a (non-C) INF or OF for bench?  Even though likely $50K "wasted"?  Have to think it's a non-zero chance.... could always do the $ trade # end of ST to push the guy off 40-man & into Minors where we need depth; basically buying an upper level depth / prospect for 100K.  Do think it's 0% chance of picking a P or C.
