Pham.....I've said before, and it's probably more relevant now, but for as little as he provided this year, to the most exciting team we've had in ages, I'm just not feeling it.

That is a ton of weed! 20 years ago that much would cost $1,200 retail. Either he is selling (probably not) or he is trying to impress his friends. Either way he is a major idiot.
Yes. Campusano's signing bonus was 1.3 MM. He was on an MLB & then playoff roster/s part of the season.
If it were determined it was intent to deal, despite thinking the GA laws are absurd, the decision making is SO bad, have to question his role on the team.
Way more logical explanation is that was his offseason "supply" legally obtained in CA... sure hope he didn't get on an airplane with it?!
Sigh. Let's stop talking about trading Mejia now.

The fact that it was found in his car at 5:00 am driving home on a Sunday might suggest that it was a GA buy ... illegally.
However it is legal in CA to purchase 27 grams (the limit is 28.5 grams I think). Then what is the legality of transporting it to a state where it is illegal.
A lot of legal angles to play out ... if the prosecutor wants to go down that road. Assuming he is a first time offender ... think it will get worked out with fines / community services / probation .... BUT there is that small chance to worry about.

Quote from Brian Connelly on October 21, 2020, 8:11 amPham.... sigh. I was SO excited when the Padres made that trade! Remember Blake Snell live reacting furiously that Rays traded him?
With all of the components of his disastrous 2020, I still feel this: betting AGAINST Tommy Pham in his Free Agency Contract year is a foolish sucker bet. Pham's work ethic is off the charts; one of those rare guys who maybe does TOO much. His lower body / running regimen is what 24 year old NFL cornerbacks do. He does best when he has a chip on his shoulder & his ability is doubted (held back in St. Louis, broke out in Tampa). I think the biggest injury of all may have been when he got hurt early in the season diving for a ball, and just didn't look right moving in the OF for a 20+ SB guy who stole like 4-5 bases the first 2-3 games.
So DESPITE: Coming into ST I gimpy from injuries last year, Covid + test (decision making then is fair to question now), short ST AND Summer camp as a result, the dive that curtailed his movement in OF, early hitting struggles with no power, broken hamate bone, ongoing vision issues, dropped fly ball in playoffs, and questionable "wrong place, wrong time" decision... I still think Pham is going to have a great "prove it" 2021.
BUT my #1 thing I don't like about Tommy Pham was an interview I saw in one of the 2 Spring Trainings. All he talked about was himself and "proving that he's one of the best OF in MLB for Free agency....." On a brand new team that just traded for him to be a team leader, and with 2 years to go until FA.... "FA" should not & would not have crossed a team focused guy's lips in that situation.
Pham's work ethic & desire to win & "redass" reputation were specifically sought out for a team whose effort & focus fell apart at the end of 2019. Padres needed a team focused vet not afraid to tell it like it is (Pham did do that early on saying Pads known by other teams for having poor plate disicipline). That interview was NOT what anyone in Pads org wanted to hear, and he has no excuse to not know that. Ironically the "me" focus he displayed will hurt him in FA.
Padres holding the bag... Pham is too talented & motivated a player to simply non-tender, even with the large # of health & judgement issues. Would look TERRIBLE if he has a great season, even if we traded him, but especially if we just let him go, even though some (not I) consider Profar a valid full time replacement option in LF.

Quote from fenn68 on October 21, 2020, 8:45 amWell, think the current situation just dictates the Padres go with Pham in LF and see how that plays out.
He has been a declining fielder for a few years (despite the speed) but do think he will rebound offensively and provide more than Profar in LF.
If there is something to look out for is his health (as he ages) and his eyes ... he has had a problem since the minors with STL and in the games at the end of the season he was doing a lot of "blinking" suggesting his eyes were bothering him. Might hinder him in both the OF and while hitting.
I too get that he is an all "me" type personality (big chip on his shoulder) ... good when it pushes him to be the best hitter he can be ... not so good when that comes counter to team needs. Keep getting the Derek Norris vision in my head with him.
He will seek FA after the season ... Padres will probably let him move without making an offer to retain him. If the Padres are not in contention at the trade deadline ... probably a decent trade chip if hitting.

Quote from Randy Manese on October 21, 2020, 10:28 amI think it is pretty harsh to compare Pham with Norris. Norris was a cancer to his teammates, openly critical of them with a huge ego that undercut the team concept. I don't see that in Pham. Pham is probably not the most articulate in expressing what he means but I can see that in his mind that if he is the best OF available in FA two years from when he was acquired, he would have helped his team in the best way he could under his control. Pham is not a rah-rah guy or a bubbly personality but I think he is genuinely committed to doing what is best for the team and that is by playing as well as he can despite the injuries and pain. You are right about his diminished fielding and health issues but I don't think you can doubt his sincerity. Pham introvertness makes him always look a little sullen with his "game face" on but you can tell he has the fire to get better and make good on his expectations of himself and that of the team. We might not be able to afford him in the future given his age and declining physical assets but my observation of Pham is he is an extremely hard worker and is more that willing to be accountable for both the good and the bad in his everyday performance.

Quote from Randy Manese on October 21, 2020, 10:32 amPoor personal choice by Campusano but young people, even older people, make poor personal choices. I hope he is allowed to learn by them and not repeat them. This goes beyond him just as a baseball player but in his future life, which may be intertwined like it or not. I'm hoping he is given a chance to get back on the right track but he must dedicate himself to doing that. Again, this current organization abhors this kind of negative publicity and that could temper what happens to him as a Padre in the future.

Quote from BoosterSD on October 31, 2020, 7:09 pmWith Campusano's availability being up in the air. I would do the following moves, and call the offseason good.
1. Take a flier contract on either Kluber or Archer.
2. Sign Wieters as back up C. Mejia might be better served by starting in MiL for additional work.
3. Sign Howie Kendrick as back up RHH 2B.
4. Sign Kevin Pillar for back up CF (RHH).
5. Resign Rosenthal.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 5, 2020, 10:14 amAccording to Acee the Padres will be looking to add a Catcher?
This would mean they are not going to use Mejia at the major league level and Campusano obviously will start at AA/AAA if not traded due to his recent off the field issue.
Why have they soured on Mejia so completely?
Or would this move just be for depth and until Mejia hits his way back onto the big league club from AAA?
