Totally shocked that we got Darvish without sacrificing any top prospect that is close to contributing in the majors.  In fact, Preciado, Mena and Caissie haven't even had a minor league AB!  I really will miss following those prospects, especially Santana, but he hasn't even reached Low A yet (but probably will this year).  Have to remember that Almanzar was considered one of these top prospects in the 2016 signing class and still hasn't made it out of Low A.  Attrition rate is pretty high.  Cubs fans have to be shocked!

On the other hand, Padres are looking really really good.  Would still like to see us get Rosenthal or Yates back but probably no money left in the till.  Otherwise, I think we're good to go for 2021 and beyond!  Great job Preller!

Might be the time for a move with one of the out of option players (probably a RP) or Wingenter. Unless Preller has something pre-worked ... the move has to be consistent with the adds ... so even with physicals and paperwork this week. Not a lot of time for "negotiations" for deals.

Other than potentially Stammen to shed payroll (and really don't expect that) don't see much else that would generate enough savings to be worth the loss in production to the roster. So probably what we see is what we have to work with in 2021. Outside chance some minor moves to upgrade from Allen in the OF or Mateo but more likely a hold mode until ST as other teams that lost out on needed adds begin to search at the next level and the types like Lucchesi, Baez, Stammen, et al become more desirable.

Keeping in mind that expect to DFA at least two RP as the 26 man roster is finalized ... so maybe a preemptive strike with a trade is feasible. Plus if the 40 man is filled, Clevinger and Wingenter can go on the 60 day to open other slots as needed (one probably for Gore at some point). With only Ona (OF), Marcano (INF), and Campusano (C) as assumed call up options on the 40 man ... that flexibility to add a non-roster type is valuable. Padres in good shape there.

I guess a major focus in ST will be in sorting through the RHRP to get the 26 man roster set which probably only includes five (one being Pagan). Expect three LHRP (Pomeranz, Strahm locks and either Hill or Castillo).

For the remaining four .... Adams and Johnson seem to have the inside track (out of options) ... the remaining two from Stammen, Altavilla, Williams, and Guerra (all out of options). Bednar has options and is likely out of the mix and Espinosa (if in the pen), Thompson (if converted to the pen), and Baez are all likely minor league bound with options. Padres also seem to like Wilson and Fox as potential RHRP ... non-roster and could become factors in 2021.

Could be some interesting shuffling in ST or even during the season as some of the out of option arms potentially get bumped. RP are a strange bunch to project year to year and maybe that is why Preller is not focusing there plus he may have some high expectations for some of these arms ... something that we may not see.

Padres To Sign Ha-Seong Kim

10:44pm: It’s a four-year, $25MM pact, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribunereports.

============

So, AAV of $6.25MM ... might save some early money if the cash flow is favorable.

I am not too worried about the 40 man.  The Padres could make a few more minor moves.  I dont think anyone would be too upset if Stammen, Bednar, or Wingenter never pitched again in SD.  I do still think the Padres need one more PH/DH bat (preferably a RHH where Renfroe would have been perfect).

The more I think about it, the more I am ok if we dont sign Rosenthal.  Pom (9th), Pagan (8th) Johnson (7th) is a pretty solid back of the pen.  Add Adams, Strahm, Hill, Castillo (is he healthy), Altavilla, and Guerra and its a great pen even WITH OUT a closer

I'm looking at a couple of the Orioles outfielders as a possible trade opportunity - Hays or Santander - for that RH hitter with a little upside.  A couple of young arms might do it - obviously nobody in the Gore/Morejon/Weathers mode.

Padres do have some options w/out Rosenthal or Yates, but why not try to get that closer to finish off a great rotation.  Padres have gone this far with their commitment to win now, so why not?

Jayce Tingler must be one of the the happiest guy on the planet!

Wow. I can't believe we got Darvish without giving up any of our top prospects. Great trade.

Please please please let Lamet be healthy enough to make it through next season.

signed,

every Padre fan!

Actually we all need to wish for all our pitchers to stay healthy.

Every one of our 5 starters are either hurt,or have had arm issues in the recent past.

Kinda scary

Padres are now an obvious World Series contender with 3 remaining "needs":

  1.  ONE RH Closer.  Don't need 3 RP, don't need Brad Hand:  have a LHRP who will be paid 10 MM in 22 & 23: Pom.  Another RP in that range feels highly unlikely.  The obvious solution is Kirby Yates for 1 year on a creative low base, high incentive deal.  Add a significant 1-2 MM buyout vs 10-12 MM, and can have him for very cheap I think.  He wants to come back.   1 / 3 MM + 2 MM incentives + 2 MM buyout (vs 12 MM)?  That's "1" for 5-7 MM or 2 / 15 -17 MM, but only "hits" O.D. roster for 3 MM.
  2.  A "True" 4th OF.  Bench is SOOO much better today than yesterday.  But it still leans a little heavily on 28 y.o.  <100 MLB PA Brian O' Grady as both a 4th OF and PH/DH type.  Both O'Grady & Mateo are "swing" OF/INF guys which has value but they are very unproven for a team of this caliber.  Obviously very little $ to spend.  Trade of an MLB RP for a young 4th OF?
  3.  LH "DH" (PH).  Everyone will say "we have Cronenworth now".  GOOD PH option, but < ideal power for a true DH.  Leans on O'Grady again.  IF DH returns, would increase as a need.  More of a "luxury"/midseason add feel now.

Listened to a reporter from Chicago .... so maybe less inclined to praise Darvish as he departs BUT he went out of his way to say how good Darvish was to work with for the media and his personality was a winner for the fans ... accessible, humor.

Darvish, Snell both billed as being media / fan friendly to add to Tatis ... makes the Padres the type of team fans want to follow.

That trio may elevate the Padres to even a greater national presence. Machado may be a top player but is not a media darling and Pham is ... well ... just grumpy.

On field performance is the most important but these fringe values make the whole team / franchise better.
