Padres need to shed a 40 man roster guy to add both Darvish and Caratini. Shouldn't be hard.

With the add of Kim, and Cronenworth for the long haul as well, I say its time to move Abrams to CF this spring. When Myers leaves, you slide Grisham to RF, and Abrams slides right into CF.
Dont worry about LF or DH, there are always an abundance of those guys.

Always look at the other guy in the deal ... Caratini. Don't under estimate his value to the Padres as the #2 catcher.
He is a 27 year old switch hitter with a reputation for good defense and elite farming skills. Not a great hitter (about average OPS) but actually decent for a catcher. Plus he is Darvish's personal catcher and has 3 low cost control years. He also has played some 1B for the Cubs. His LHP / RHP splits are about equal in his career ... a little bit of pop in his bat.
A good balance with Nola ... and fills a real need on the ML roster.

Morejon stays .... and in the short run that is just more depth to cover any injury issues. Padres hold on to Gore, Morejon, Weathers, Lawson, and Baez and only one is needed in 2021 for the back end of the staff.
Nice prospects but none have been in full season so maybe 4-6 years out IF the develop. Good gamble for a setting up a 3 year run 2021-23. Also, holding on to Abrams, Campusano, Marcano, Head, Hassell still creates good system prospect for the nearer future.

If there is one thing we can be sure of, it's that Preller knows how to restock the lower systems with high upside guys.

The Padres will consider trying Jake Cronenworth and even Ha-seong Kim in the outfield, if only to see how it looks. Cronenworth has limited experience beyond the infield. Kim has not officially appeared in the outfield in his pro career. The universal DH, of course, would help.

So with Darvish, Caratini, Snell coming in; and Davies heading out, plus the signing of Kim ($7.5M guess), I have the payroll around $151M. This does not count any monies coming back from CHC, which is reported to be "minor".

WTF I can't take a few hours off without missing something huge.
It's a great time to be a Padre fan. I've always gotten compliments when wearing my old school 84 brown jacket wherever I go here in Michigan. Now I hear tons of people talking about how great the Padres are. Sure is fun to hear the respect. I'm not sure where the money printing press is but as soon as fans are allowed they should have no problems with attendance and merchandise sales

ABSOLUTELY! With Caratini too. Pads must have some capacity to absorb more $ than we thought... OR there's another move coming. Preciado & Mena are WAY out... can't believe this is "all" it took. Probably be cringing in 5 years but definitely OK with this trade assuming we can stomach that $.
Look for the Stammen/Lucchesi (or Baez) salary dump/prospect recoup move now...
