- sign Sugano ($12MM per year / 2 years), then
- deal Davies ($8-9MM and a FA after the season)
stabilizes 2021-22 (no guarantee that Clevinger will return to begin 2022 at his previous production level).
should be a market for Davies at his cost on a one year deal ... not an immediate impact return but maybe a position player (OF or C) that helps down the road.
That scenario then just becomes a $3MM +/- increase (very manageable). Does boil down to how much the Padres see in Sugano. (and most know I think Davies is a vastly underrated SP). NYY, LAA, others can handle the salary and NEED multiple SP upgrades.
You don't think Sugano will get a few 3-4 year offers?
I do.
I was just parrotting the estimate floating around the rumor mill. Yes, do think he can get 3 years (not so sure about 4 in this market). At 31 and still on a projection for MLB effectiveness ... pushes against any long term commitment. Then add the longer the deal ... the bigger the money in the contract ... the bigger the money the bigger the posting fee to his former club. A series of good reasons to be conservative on the number of years.

Well Preller keeps making the winter interesting:
Despite last night’s agreement to acquire Blake Snell from the Rays, the Cubs are also “deep” in talks on a trade that would send Yu Darvish from Chicago to San Diego, according to Dennis Lin, Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic (Twitter link). R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports first indicated that the Padres were still in the mix for Darvish even after landing Snell. Importantly, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweetsthat San Diego is not on Darvish’s 12-team no-trade list, so the deal can be made without requiring Darvish’s approval.
Heard an earlier rumor was more aligned with Morejon to the Cubs with Darvish (and $10MMish) to the Padres ... not sure if $10MM per year or $10MM total for the 3 years.
IF that played out .... makes my potential deal of Davies more logical to offset some of Darvish's remaining contract and get some position player depth. On the other hand, might that suggest that the Padres are worried about Lamet's health more than they have let on?
We could see: Lamet (3 years); Snell (3 years); Darvish (3 years); Paddack (4 years); Davies-Clevinger (2 years). Gore gets a year in the minors and if he is as advertised could push for Preller to trade one of the above. Weathers gets two years of development in the minors.
Will need some SP for 2024 to emerge ... hard to evaluate beyond Gore and Weathers the really young prospects and three years allows for a lot of drafts and development. I guess worry about 2021-23 and not that far down the road.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 28, 2020, 10:49 amI assume they are proceeding on the basis that Lamet won't make it through Spring Training.
Any other way and could be caught with our pants down to start the season.
Can't have "too much" pitching...but Lamet not even getting "in" to the season would be a killer without making these moves now.

Quote from fenn68 on December 28, 2020, 10:50 amQuote from MrPadre19 on December 28, 2020, 10:33 amAccording to Dennis Lin the Padres are still deep in talks for Yu Darvish!
OMG!
The thinking must be that we send them another contract(Myers/Davies/Pham) or we send such good prospects they pay down some of Darvish's contract.
I don't know how I feel about losing any more top 10 prospects?
Best case scenario is they take Pham as part of the deal,we also sign Kim to play 2b and Cronenworth moves to LF.
But including Pham would still mean we lose some more really good prospects IE:Morejon/Abrams/Hassell/Head/Weathers
I still don't see Gore being dealt.
If the Padres are going big with Snell, Darvish, and Kim .... can't see them dealing Myers, Pham to weaken the offense with no quality replacement ... and still the potential for the DH in 2021.
Has to be a bundle of prospects coupled with how much the Cubs want (need) to reduce payroll. Moving $13MM (keeping $10MM) may be better than not making a deal and sitting with $23MM. Think the negotiating advantage goes to the Padres. Again, Morejon was the lead name I heard then since the Cubs seem to be focusing on a re-tool that covers a few years ... might see names like Marcano (especially if the Padres sign Kim) and pitchers like Baez or Omar Cruz in the mix.
At this point Gore is going nowhere ... and don't think Weathers is either.

Quote from fenn68 on December 28, 2020, 10:55 amWell Preller and the rumor mill just keeps getting more interesting:
12:28pm: The Padres are focused on more than Darvish alone, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman and the New York Post’s Joel Sherman (Twitter link). Both suggest that the talks between the Cubs and Padres could be expanded to include one of Willson Contreras or Victor Caratini.
I can't see enough prospects to make that work AND have the Cubs take back some contract money. Maybe Preller convinced Siedler to really go "all in" and take the bulk of Darvish's deal with that being the incentive for the Cubs not to ask for a ton of return.
It is 2015 all over again!

Quote from Brian Connelly on December 28, 2020, 10:56 amAgree can't deal Gore. Campusano seems like "no touch" now too, with 2 C's gone in the Snell trade, and many have also put Abrams in that category (> Patino) 3 yrs of 34 y.o. Darvish @ 20 MM AAV is definitely less in trade than 3 yrs of 28 y.o. Snell @ 13 MM.
I wonder about Davies AND Clevinger to Cubs... Saves/costs about 8 MM first 2 years. Sets up "Big 3" of: Darvish, Snell, Lamet for 3 years. If NOT Clevinger... those 3 + him and Gore/Paddack in 2022?!?!
Unfortunately if they do sign Kim, Jake looks like a logical piece in the trade...
If the deal is completed, multiple players would head to Chicago. (Dennis Lin)

Let the speculation dive even further with the CHC.

IF this kid can be .280/.360 BA/OBP with 15-20 HRs and 20-25 steals, he could become a real nice table setter at the top of the line up, and make some trouble for SPs with Tatis and Machado to follow.

Quote from fenn68 on December 28, 2020, 11:24 amSnell then Kim - have to believe a Darvish deal will get done given the focus from Preller.
Could go so many ways given Darvish at 35 being owed about $60MM over the next three years. Darvish is very good but how many other teams will make an offer that does not require the Cubs to eat money or have trade chips to match even the secondary Padre pieces. Reducing payroll and getting some future pieces is the motivation for the Cubs ... so holding on Darvish doesn't fit.
Just random speculation that Campusano might be in the mix. First Padres paid a lot to get Nola (5 years control) and they really seem to like him defensively. Second, the follow up rumor suggests catchers Contreras (estimated $6.5MM in arb and controlled in 2022) or Caratini (estimated $1.5MM in arb and controlled in 2022-23).
A Morejon / Campusano based deal could get it done with some "fringe" pieces and money exchange balancing it out. If the "all in" for winning in the next 3 years is the objective .... could see Campusano being expendable. If they got Caratini for the next three years ... fair amount on time to develop / find a replacement.
