Off Season Thread

PreviousPage 50 of 130Next

this off season reminds me a little of 2015 but with much better players. Just the excitement of waking up or checking MLB Trade Rumors to see what I had missed. 84 and 98 were awesome years but there wasn't a real window of contention. Both teams were heavy on older vets with no farm team to supply reinforcements. We still have several great prospects who hopefully will keep the window open for years. Now AJ sign Kim and Rosenthal and call it a day. Lets give Morejon and Gore and Weathers a chance to get some innings in the big leagues this year.

Happy New Year Padre fans

So if we sign Kim along with the Snell deal what does this mean for the back of the Pen?

We stand pat with Pom/Pagan?

We sign Yates still?

I’d guess we would be out on Rosenthal......

If they were to get Kim, I would have to imagine it means they are out on Sugano and any other big FA baring a trade of Myers.

It was fairly pointed out that the Padres struggled against lefties last year, in fact, of the Padres' regulars the only ones to hit .275+ against LHP were Myers/Machado/Pham/Profar.  With Profar gone, and Pham injured most of last year, that left two players.  If you assume Pham will be healthy and add Kim, that fills up two big holes.

Tatis and Grisham were ok against lefties, while Nola and Hos were HORRENDOUS.  Nola is cheap and the pitchers reportedly love throwing to him.  Considering how well he hits RHP I'm fine with him + a defensive vet catcher to backup until Campusano is ready.  I do think the Padres need to finally give up on playing Hos everyday.  and get some RHH bat off the bench that can play 1B (unless you believe that can be Ona)

Making up a scenario that is unlikely BUT if Sugano is projected (at age 31) at $12MM AAV over 2 years and the Padres seem to be focusing on a 2-3 year horizon, COULD the Padres

  1. sign Sugano ($12MM per year / 2 years), then
  2. deal Davies ($8-9MM and a FA after the season)

stabilizes 2021-22 (no guarantee that Clevinger will return to begin 2022 at his previous production level).

should be a market for Davies at his cost on a one year deal ... not an immediate impact return but maybe a position player (OF or C) that helps down the road.

That scenario then just becomes a $3MM +/- increase (very manageable). Does boil down to how much the Padres see in Sugano. (and most know I think Davies is a vastly underrated SP). NYY, LAA, others can handle the salary and NEED multiple SP upgrades.

I know that by now this is "old news", but I missed it the first time around 🙂

Nick Burdi (P) SD - Dec. 22

https://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.php?id=762120

Burdi (elbow) signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Burdi is clearly talented, but injuries have unfortunately been the story of his career thus far. He made just three appearances last season before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He's expected to miss the entirety of the upcoming season, meaning this is a low-risk investment for 2022 and beyond for San Diego.

You don't think Sugano will get a few 3-4 year offers?

I do.

Hold onto your hats boys, according to MLBTR citing multiple sources, not only are we listed as the favorites to land Kim. SD is still deep into talks to acquire Darvish from the Cubs. This is in addition to getting Snell. Part of the push to get Kim, and this is speculation on the MLBTR writers part, is that CHC might want Cronenworth to be part of the package returning to CHC.

We could have another wild Hot Stove Season on our hands!!

PRELLLERRRR!?!?!?

"Padres favorites to land Ha-Seong Kim"

"Padres deep into talks to Acquire Yu Darvish"

W T bleep...

Pham, Myers, or Zach Davies would seemingly have to be a part of a Darvish trade.

Guess we can't rule out any big contract:  Hosmer (limited no-trade)?!?  Pomeranz, even Clevinger (Davies + Clev for Darvish)?

And, of course, Cubs could also be eat some of Darvish $$.

The Kim idea while a massive surprise to me, does make sense.  Darvish on top of Snell (& Kim) looks like it would create some major other roster changes?  UNLESS payroll is significantly (1o MM+) higher than anticipated, it sure seems like 2 out of 3 of:  Pham, Davies, Myers (50%+ $) would have to go SOMEwhere...

Maybe a "here's why we have to spend $ when other teams aren't" conversation took place with Seidler, & with vaccines out, payroll is far > we thought?   My head already hurts... speculation little pointless with Preller living in a different universe than me & my little brain!

Looked at some scouting reports on Kim ... and as expected all over the place given his KBO profile.

Power is a big element when he pulls but hits to all fields for extra bases with a line-drive swing (not a big upper cut hitter which fits the Padres current model). Big leg kick and may have some difficulty with the high heat (but who doesn't). Not a big strikeout guy.

Has a strong arm but just an OK fielder at SS and just OK speed. Seems to be the best fit for 2B (played a little there in the KBO). Bat will be his calling card.

Now if you want to get really hyped about Kim ... one site made his Comp ... Trea Turner with less speed and a stronger arm. I could live with that for 5 years at $7-8MM per year at the peak of his career (only 25 now)!

=====

Kim - Tatis - Machado as a stable INF for 5+ years could be a great base for long term winning. Cronenworth to the OF could fill a looming hole in 2022 (maybe 2021). Maybe a Kim signing sends Abrams to the OF sooner than later in his development.

=====

With Snell ($10.5 MM cash in 2021) and Kim ($7-8MM) ... that would consume all the assumed payroll flexibility ... so, suspect Preller has convinced Siedler to push the envelope on payroll for longer term / high ceiling adds with some money still on the table for a catcher / RP.

I remember reading a Seidler article that stated he sees the budget in a 5yr spread. He may jack up the payroll this year anticipating savings or revenue down the road. Interesting possibility.

According to Dennis Lin the Padres are still deep in talks for Yu Darvish!

OMG!

The thinking must be that we send them another contract(Myers/Davies/Pham) or we send such good prospects they pay down some of Darvish's contract.

I don't know how I feel about losing any more top 10 prospects?

Best case scenario is they take Pham as part of the deal,we also sign Kim to play 2b and Cronenworth moves to LF.

But including Pham would still mean we lose some more really good prospects IE:Morejon/Abrams/Hassell/Head/Weathers

I still don't see Gore being dealt.
