The Padres have signed Nabil Crismatt
2020 saw the 25-year-old Crismatt made his MLB debut, as he tossed 8 1/3 innings over six relief appearances for St. Louis and posted a 3.24 ERA and eight strikeouts against just one walk. He has also impressed in recent Dominican Winter League outings, with a 2.00 ERA, 8.50 K/BB rate, and 8.5 K/9 over 18 innings.
=======
No idea if it is a major league or minor league deal. Basically a real shot in the dark and guessing they work him as a RP although he was a SP in the minors (and NOT very good). However, his stuff seems to be effective at times and maybe in relief makes him look better.
90 MPH FB complimented with an 80 MPH change and a 72 MPH curve ... uses them all. I suspect the speed differentials (if the pitches are mixed right) is his path to success and in the pen ... not much time for opponents to get used to his mix. HR prone.
Long shot.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 19, 2020, 10:23 amDon't see how he bumps any of our pitchers off the 40 man, unless they want to expose Wingenter; minor league deal with an invite to ST the best he probably can do.
Looks like he's okay at AA but bombs out at AAA (twice). For that reason, might start out as a starter in AA and then move up as the arms move up and down between El Paso and San Diego. Having a very good winter - stranger things have happened but does look like a long shot to make a 2021 contribution to the big league team.

Quote from fenn68 on December 19, 2020, 11:15 amGiven the potential real crowd of SP in AAA/AA ... most much better prospects ... I am guessing they will try to convert him to a RP in the minors. Maybe the change in role is what he needs ... he will be 26. Padres do need some additional potential in the AAA/AA pen for call-up purposes.
If they catch lighting in a bottle .... he could give a free swing team fits with a 90 MPH(FB) - 80 MPH(change) - 70 MPH(curve) in relief of a 99MPH FB and hard slider from Lamet.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 19, 2020, 9:46 pmWouldn't mind getting former Grossmont High's Joe Musgrove into the rotation from the Pirates. However, think the Pirates want to dump Polanco's 11.6M salary for 2021 and would probably want to ship him along to clear the last big salary from their books. If Musgrove is expected to get around 3.75M in arbitration, then you're talking about committing over 15M and have to get Pittsburgh to take some of the financial burden back. Plus, Polanco has 3M buyout in 2022 and 1M buyout in 2023 to consider. Musgrove has 2 years of control after 2021.
Pittsburgh is prospect poor and has very few traceable pieces. If it is only Musgrove, then I'd possibly looking at Morejon, Mejia and one of the RP without an option - like Guerra - for Musgrove. Much as I like Morejon, he's been injured throughout his minor league career and I'm hesitant to commit a starter slot in the future to him when he's not pitched more than 65 innings in an entire season. Great stuff but big risk. I see Musgrove as more of an innings eater but better pitcher than Davies, who may become too costly in 2022; somewhere in the high mid-rotation.
If Polanco has to be part of the deal, then we're into dealing Pham, Stammen and probably another RP without an option to balance out the trade. Maybe too costly for a #3 starter with the possibility of edging up to a #2. He eventually will be passed by Gore, Patino, etc. but could establish trade value on his own that might help us reel in an OF starter down the road. Polanco's not a great OBP guy nor is he a very good defensive OF and he hits LH. For one year, probably can live with the hope that Polanco still has some of his 2018 ability left. Pittsburgh may take it since Stammen's buyout is only 1M.
Likely a very long shot that this happens but just Musgrove, if we can get him for a reasonable price, would be a nice addition.

Quote from fenn68 on December 20, 2020, 6:34 amI would be OK with adding Musgrove into the mix BUT not going to pay a big price for a pitcher before the 2020 shortened season did not have an ERA under 4.00 and only pitched a full season in 2019. IL in 2015, in 2016, in 2017, in 2018, in 2020.
======
In 2021, taking on a bad contact is a no deal and assuming it could be offset by moving your own bad contacts is just not likely ... without giving up more useful assets.
=====
For me it would take something major to move Gore, Patino, Morejon, or Weathers. Think fans are jumping ship too quickly on a group of 20/21 year old prospects who in the past would have been still developing in high A. So, for a Musgrove type (no) but a Sunny Gray (yes).

Quote from fenn68 on December 20, 2020, 10:49 amMLB Rumors has Toronto, LAA, and Boston interested in Musgrove. Considering 2018 and 2019 records:
56 GS ... 294 innings ... 4,14 ERA ... 3.96 xFIP = Lucchesi (4 years control at league minimum in 2021)
50 GS ... 286 innings ... 4.28 ERA ... 4.15 xFIP = Musgrove (2 years control at $3.8MM in 2021)
Could argue that Lucchesi is a better option than Musgrove. Maybe the Padres should call LAA, Toronto, and Boston to work a deal with Lucchesi for a position player / prospect?
More likely, Lucchesi may have more trade value than I have estimated and he could be a useful "piece" in a multi-player deal for a quality add.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 20, 2020, 10:52 amMLB Hot Stove did a good comparison between Gray and Musgrove last Friday. I'm not anti-Sonny Gray, but just saying that the costs in prospects and salary are much higher for Gray than Musgrove and the return on investment in the long run may be similar enough that Musgrove is worth the gamble.
My thought is that Padres can probably match Red Sox and Angels with players the Pirates may want but it would be tough to outbid the Blue Jays if they are serious about Musgrove. I've already indicated what I think would be a fair deal and why. For Gray you are probably talking about Patino and Campusano to head the trade and both those guys are likely more valuable to the Padres over time than Morejon. Further, Gray is a 3 years older than Musgrove and has a much more violent delivery in a much smaller frame than Musgrove. Gray also has missed time on the IL in the last 5 years - a lot of pitchers do. I think Musgrove has a lot of upside left and if Gray wins 1 or 2 more games than Musgrove in 2021 and beyond, would it have ben worth the price?
My guess is that Preller eventually considers the cost too high and moves on from Gray. I just hope by the time the realization hits that we haven't lost the opportunity for obtaining Musgrove. Toronto, however, will be tough to beat with their package of prospects for a prospect starved team like the Pirates. I'm not jumping ship on 20/21 year-old prospects but we'll give up even more for Gray than for Musgrove. My gamble with Morejon is whether he actually can pitch 100 innings any time soon - I'd let someone else find that out. I'm pretty sure you'll get 150-200 solid innings out of Musgrove.

Quote from fenn68 on December 20, 2020, 11:15 amI doubt Preller offers up the demand for Gray (but I do like him) which may be more than Patino / Campusano. I would not do that either. No idea what the other teams would offer for Musgrove ... but guessing it more a pair of good (but not elite Top 100 type) prospects. Padres would only have to top that level.
More in the Baez / Thompson package level. Much more than that and I would retarget the better prospects on someone like Carrasco for Cleveland.
Frankly the critical path item may be Sugano ... if the Padres sign him may not need to stretch for another SP.
Lamet - Davies - Sugano - Paddack - Lucchesi (or Gore or Patino or Morejon or Weathers ... some combo) should do the trick.
