Quote from fenn68 on December 20, 2020, 12:42 pmI guess a challenge for Preller for 2021 is how many games will be in the season ... beginning to look as though less than 162. If they drop 1 -2 months, maybe 120 games?
That could change the view on the use of the Padres’ prospects on the ML club. Use Paddack as a benchmark: 2017 (zero innings recovering from TJ); 2018 (90 innings); 2019 (141 innings in the ML managed over 162).
In a shortened season, probably only seeking a maximum 120 innings. Looking at 2019: Gore (101 innings); Weathers (96 innings); Patino (95 innings) all have the “base” to go 120 innings ... less of a jump than Paddack made. FYI: Baez (57 innings) and Morejon (44 innings) probably are minor league candidates.
Gore, Patino, and Weathers are among the Padres top prospects ... at least one (if not more) given the ML shot in 2021 should produce as well as any #4-5 SP at a minimum ... maybe much better.
The shorter the 2021 season .... the more sense to stay in-house with the prospects ... save money ... save trade chips ... develop for the next 6 years.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 20, 2020, 1:58 pmI’d love to add a TOR starter but I hope it’s via free agency.
I don’t want to lose any more prospects right now.
I’d rather slightly overpay for a free agent(or Sugano) than lose any prospects in our top 8.
Morejon needs to be in AA building back up as a Starter.
Lamet-Davies-FA-Paddack-Lucchesi with Gore/Patińo next in line.

Quote from 84padres on December 21, 2020, 9:19 amI see where the Reds are shopping Luis Castillo. It still irks me because he should be ours already. Not sure what it would take to get him now but way more than Colin Rae. 1st year arb with 3 years control. Est 2021 salary 3 - 5 million is a bargain, start with Patino and at least 2 others. Any ideas ?

I would imagine, Patino, Baez, Ona, and Bednar.

SD gets Sonny Gray
CIN gets Morejon, Baez, Yession Santana (SS-our #16), and Bednar(RP-our #25).
I think I would do that trade.
And if CIN would substitute Castillo for Gray, I think I would substitute Morejon for Patino. Thoughts?

Nothing of any substance other than "speculators" making stuff up.

Been seeing more speculation that since Castillo is so good and lower cost .... Reds may try tie him to one of their larger contract players in a package ... 3B Suarez ... 2B /3B Moustakas ... OF Castellanos ... all are over $10MM/year and have 3 or 4 year commitments to go.
Since shedding money is important apparently to them .... probably will go that way with a financially healthy trade partner.

Yeh, I would do the Gray trade for that package ... 3 years of control at a fair salary. Doubt CINN would make that deal unless they really really want to shed payroll and can't get a better offer (which is possible in this environment).
Think Castillo would require more than just substituting Patino for Morejon. He too has 3 years control but is younger and lower cost ... plus is better. As in the other post, sense is since Castillo may be so appealing to others (and really is not a cost burden this year on CINN) ... their best gambit is attaching that "bad contract" to shed payroll.
At about $4MM Castillo does not "need" to be traded now ... CINN can wait until the trade deadline or next winter ... so they do have the leverage to wait out some team taking the "bad contract".
Just guessing Gray is the one moved (if either) for just a bundle of prospects. I guess the Padres "advantage" is they still have some high profile (near ML ready) prospects that may be more appealing than other teams (or at least the ones they want to deal).

If thats the case, the only player on that list that would make sense is Castellanos. That should also reduce the quality of prospects going back to SD.
In theory, who is more desirable for SD, Pham or Castellanos. I know you (Fenn) keep mentioning that no one is really in the pipe for LF, so could something work out where SD take Castellanos and CIN takes Pham? Maybe CIN has to keep some of the money on their books??
