Quote from fenn68 on December 7, 2020, 1:59 pmSaw that ... putting LAA as leader in the hunt.
They have been active (trade for SS, trade for closer) ... they have the need ... they have the money ... and they have Onani as a connection ... they are on the West Coast ... and may be a legit contender with a big offense. They may just over bid to get him.
Would put SF in play too ... again with money on West Coast.
As always Preller is “interested” but with a $25MM / 2 year and a $5MM posting fee (probably a minimum deal) might be too rich for the Padres with their other needs. Assuming the posting fee is upfront ... $17MM cash in 2021 might clean out the available money. Then still needed a couple of bench types (especially for PH) and at least one quality RP.

Yates not as much.
Not sure what he will get offered from other teams but he really embraced San Diego and this team and was simply lights out.
If we can sign him and add a starter via trade like Lynn I'd be content.
Can improve the bench(considering who we currently have) with DFA's during spring training.
Some good players(or at least better than Allen/Mateo) will be looking for a job in March/April.
Not so sure Lynn is in the Padres future from what I have heard. Not that he would not be a good add (innings eater and productive, and a major contract) but the “prospect cost” for only one year may be too high. Thinking Texas will push for (and likely get) better offers than the Padres would offer. Not moving any of the top tier prospects for 1 year control and the next tier are way too far off for Texas to embrace.
Would go Rosenthal but Yates (at a lower price point) is a decent fall back. Expecting Rosenthal to get more interest given his greater high profile history and a very good 2020. Yates is a bit of that out of sight out of mind player ... injured in 2020 .... older ... if he is not getting good offers seems like he actually be a bargain signing. He was a top RP in 2019 and the injury was bone chips not tendons, biceps, shoulder which are usually more worrisome.
Not as confident that in ST the Padres will find any decent DFA to fill the bench ... bodies yes / quality no. Better chance they find some veterans now on minor league deals with invites to ST (sort of this years Kinsler, Dozier, Lagares types).
I guess I am more concerned about the two additional bench adds (at least one) providing solid PH support (more important without the DH) and some ability to support the INF (first) and the OF if for no other reason than double switches when they PH. Allen is OK as the 5th OF and Mateo is just a PR specialist with some INF option but can’t hit. Nothing really in-house ML ready. Bench helps teams win games over a 162 slate ... PH is important ... starters do not play 162 ... just need to be more pro-active in avoid a major black hole.

Quote from fenn68 on December 8, 2020, 5:56 amLynn goes to the CWS. Dane Dunning (MLB #98 prospect), RHP who pitched effectively in MLB as a rookie last season. Rated a “55” and a lower end Rookie ball pitcher (Weems) go back to Texas.
Good deal for Texas gaining five year control over ML arm with upside who steps right into the rotation and will be around for the re-build.
Wonder if Chris Young had influence in this deal or was it all Daniels?

Quote from fenn68 on December 8, 2020, 9:01 amTo make a bit of a case for a push for INF RHH Hanser Alberto.
- Padres NEED another ML quality back-up INF with only Mateo in-house (and he can't hit)
- Padres NEED a legit PH option ... no DH and pitchers need to be PH for
- Padres should be concerned about supporting Cronenworth over a full 162 game season ... considering Cronenworth's line vs. LHP was a poor wRC+ of 58 (61 PA) and his Aug wRC+ of 172 (103 PA) plummeted to 54 (80 PA) in Sept.
Could be someone else, but Alberto has experience at all the INF slots and as a RHH has a career wRC+ vs LHP of 134 (315 PA). Non-tendered by Balt to avoid maybe $3MM and probably only a part-time starter profile over the long haul ... but apparently being sought by other teams ... Padres could fill a need at a "reasonable" price. Haven't seen a better alternative near his expected price point.

Possible (probably a bit more than minimum) if no other options emerge. However, as a LHH who can’t hit LHP might not be the first option as the back-up INF for Cronenworth.

Quote from fenn68 on December 8, 2020, 9:55 amI guess some price point gauge for FA with the CWS signing Adam Eaton.
He signed for $7MM with a $1MM buyout of 2022 at $8.5MM.
Eaton is 32, now really a corner OF (LHH) with diminished defensive skills. When healthy good for years which probably outweighs his poor 2020.
CWS now adding Lynn and Eaton to support to LaRussa’s new run at managing suggest CWS will be “all in” on winning in 2021. Beating out CLEV, KC, DET should be easy then a run with MINN. Will be interesting to see how aggressively they pursue FA to take the next steps.

Padres "equivalent" trade would have been:
- Ryan Weathers - Matching scouting grades for his pitches, better control 60 vs 55 then Dunning.
- Drake Fellows RHP was our 2019 6th round pick.
Not that SD was in on Lynn, but Texas probably needed someone more ready to plug into MLB than Weathers.
Rosenthal had an interesting article that Lynn essentially blocked trades to any team he didn't want to go to at trade deadline by threatening to opt out. Limited Daniels' options as GM. I suspect Daniels let CY know exactly where they were at with negotiations & CY pulled the trigger.
Really like Lynn, but would have traded away a guy with 6 years control to help plug 1 year; then "Weathers" wouldn't have been there as an option for next year's hole. Pads may be "forced" to make a move like this to address the SP hole, but I'd really rather they stretch a little for Sugano, or even take some lower end value fliers, than trade away the SP every team is going to want in trade.

Quote from Brian Connelly on December 8, 2020, 10:58 amStating the obvious, but Eaton is a really good comp to Pham. Similar Bad 2020. Very similar High BA/OBP; less power & probably SP ability than Pham now. LH vs RH. Makes me feel even better about tendering Pham despite the tough year.

Quote from fenn68 on December 8, 2020, 11:11 amI have no problem with the Padres NOT dealing one of their Top 10 prospects for 1 year of Lynn and just going a different route.
If they go for a SP has to be more than one year (unless he is a low end option) with Davies a FA and Clevinger a question mark on effectiveness ... have another key pitcher going FA after the season would really hurt 2022 chances.
Having said that ... better not be Snell. He will be the next Chris Archer deal for TB (ask PITT how that worked out). One great season (2018) surrounded by to mediocre seasons with a consistent reduction in innings per game to the point where he is less that 5 innings per start. Not the profile of a top of a rotation arm. STEP AWAY FROM TB.
Sugano may be in play (but costly FA) and might see a play with Cleveland for Carlos Carrasco (2 years control ... $24MM) who is a really really good pitcher. Cleveland is shedding payroll ... needs low cost bodies for the future (and in 2021) ... clearly has worked well with Preller in he Clevinger deal and the Trammell deal. No idea on the prospects needed but not going to be cheap.
Sort of depends on how Sugano prices out but getting him without shedding more prospects seems the better route even if Carrasco is > than Sugano. All depends a bit on how desperate the Padres are really for an upper end SP for 2021.
