Would the Rangers consider trading Lance Lynn.... for Mike Clevinger as the main piece back? Maybe:
Lynn + decent lower level prospect for: Clevinger + Baez?
Padres plug the SP hole with a >100 pitch/game (6.5 IP/GS last 2 years) workhorse. "Net" cost in 2020 is "only" 6 MM. Clear about 18 MM in salary next year but lose both Davies & Lynn.... unless one or both good enough for QO, which they would likely take.
Texas saves 6 MM in covid-2021 season, gets future value for Lynn, backfills with Baez to get a real look as a SP he might be blocked from in SD.
Stupid? Genius? what do you guys think?
Both sides may be nervous about this one.
Padres signed Clevinger to the deal with an eye on winning in 2022 as Davies leaves and was willing to carry him in 2021. Dealing for one year of Lynn sort of goes counter to that since he will be gone after 2021 and will create a bigger SP hole in 2022 (could always sign Lynn in 2022 as a FA).
Rangers probably think (and probably correctly) the could get a much better return than Clevinger who will not pitch in 2021 and is a big question mark on 2022 (pitching effectively). Baez is nice but on compelling. They should be able to clear all of Lynn's salary ... take on no cost for 2022 ... and get at least one quality prospect to control cheaply for 6 years.
Padres may try to trade for Lynn ... but only one year / $8MM ... not sure what prospect I would give to take on that ... and what would appeal to Texas. Mejia+Baez? Marcano+Castillo? ... not one of the elite prospects for sure.

Spend the rest of the time in AA to control their innings.
‘Lamet-Davies-Paddack-Lucchesi-Prospect combo
Barring a SP add which considering the Pham news may have to come via trade.
I would add Morejon into that 5th spot rotation with the other prospects.
Don't really see the Padres using their assets on a trade for a SP that would be better than the prospect rotation ... the sellers know the heightened value of their trade chip and will work the MLB market to squeeze out an over pay.
I am interested in what the Japanese starters come in at (and if the Padres really become players). They pitched innings last year and the two mentioned are "veterans" at around ages 30 and 28 and were effective.
If the $10-15MM is legit to deploy ... based on the signings ... may be able to get a decent closer and an innings eater starter gamble to hold the fort for the prospects (maybe late in 2021). Maybe still have a $1-2MM for bench upgrades (amount over the minimums that have to be paid).
Yes.....forgot about Morejon.
This is about where I make my yearly suggestion that we go with a 6 man rotation.
Makes sense once again...at least to me.
Lamet-Davies-Paddack-Lucchesi-Morejon-rotation of rookies.
Or add in the Starter we will probably acquire some way this off season.

Quote from Brian Connelly on December 2, 2020, 4:20 pmYes. If there was EVER a team (lots of good young "interchangeable" SP's) & season to go 6-man rotation, 2021 is it. The problem is, you lose a bullpen arm, of which we have not only too many, but too many with no options. So think the "rotating" last spot might be more likely.
It's also possible that this issue (all teams affected pretty equally) might be another factor in a delayed start / shortened season. Don't panic! More along lines of 30-40 less games; play 120-130? I could actually see a scenario where owners & MLBPA agree to, for example, playing 20% less games, but players only losing 10% of their season's pay... "subtract" the games at the front end of the season with no / little fans (pre-widespread vaccine) that will lose the most $, slide the season later (don't have to worry about flu season in Fall 2021) when fans can attend.... but not ridiculously later weather (& NFL) wise.
Position players might grumble, but I could see a lot of SP's secretly being completely OK with "only" makng 25-26 starts in 2021

With what appears to be a significant distribution of the vaccines by the end of March .. and almost total by the end of June ... neither side may be too quick in delaying the start of the season (or even ST for the ML/AAA types using the bubble approach). If the Johnson & Johnson vaccine gets approved as the third option ... should see even an accelerated approach (that one needs only one shot .. can be produced fast in larger volumes).
Both sides want to make max money after 2020 and since the end of 2020 ran well ... they will go for it.

Quote from fenn68 on December 2, 2020, 5:38 pmLooking for some bench strength .... that may be low cost but still fit the Padres profile.
Cubs non-tendered Almora ... RHH CF type with plus defense but did not hit has hoped as a high draft pick. At this point not more than a 4th-5th OF but maybe worth a look ... to pair in the OF with Allen ... allows Ona to work in the minors every day.
Cleveland non-tendered DeShields .... similar profile as Almora is worth a look.
Both should be low cost (maybe even a minor league deal with an invite to ST and a make good ML deal).
Still have not noticed any bench INF options non-tendered.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 2, 2020, 6:45 pmA couple of guys I think could be good fits were let go today. Hanser Alberto is a career .350/367/.464 hitter against lefties and can play all over the infield. Curt Casali is a career .264/.352/.465 hitter against lefties and a solid defensive catcher. Guys like Brian Goodwin and David Dahl could be interesting too. Injury coverage for Pham and maybe even starters if the DH stays and we want to use Pham there.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 2, 2020, 7:08 pmI really like Alberto and he has links to Preller (signed as an international free agent by Texas Rangers) and our ex-Baltimore coaches. Probably a lot of competition for him but has got to be less expensive than Profar. There are others I like better in the OF and C but agree they are all solid pick-ups for any team.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 2, 2020, 7:14 pmStrahm's deal was pretty much what was predicted, maybe just a tad higher. With a healthy Strahm, Castillo and Pomeranz I think the Padres are pretty well set from the left side of the bullpen. Hill can be optioned out and there are probably a slew of LH relief pitchers that can be had for a minor league deal with a chance to come to spring training. At worst, we can even put Morejon and Weathers in that mix but I'd rather see them as starters.
Got to sort out the RH relief squad but I think when the dust settles, we'll be okay. Padres always had a decent bullpen during the Preller years and I see that going forward in 2021 with both and internal and external candidates fighting for high leverage positions - some probably still have yet to be signed!

Quote from fenn68 on December 2, 2020, 7:56 pmLike Alberto too as a RHH option in the INF ... really some insurance with Cronenworth having struggled with LHP in 2020. If Balt did not want to go with arbitration with an expected $2.6 - $3.0MM decision ... and got no trade feelers ... probably should be signed for less ... and that fits well.
=====
Did see a note from Dennis Lin that the Padres will be looking for additional LH relief pitching help since they want to work Morejon and Weathers as SP.
Did not say the profile but maybe not a major add with Pomeranz, Strahm, Hill, and Castillo in hand. They can option Hill and Castillo I guess if they add a better ML veteran.
