Wingenter to IL-60 for Kela.

I believe Pads can actually option Lawson to minors despite being injured because the injury happened before being added to 40-man roster.

It would make sense if our Relievers stay healthy through Spring Training for Preller to trade 2-3 for an outfielder.

I'm sure he likes having "too much" pitching at this point....but once he has to make serious decisions and possibly lose some(Guerra.Altavilla etc) for nothing,as much as other teams need arms it would make sense to try and do a 3 for 1 deal for a "decent" outfielder.

You're not getting a starter for Guerra/Altavilla/Stammen et al, but you could move some of Stammens' cost and get a decent 4th OF  maybe.

Where's the rush in trading someone?  Craig Elston was talking about it on MTPGA, out of everyone in the pen, you can make the argument that Guerra has the best pitch.   Now last year we saw that times he would struggle controlling it and then would groove it right down the middle.  BUT, if he came into camp and has figured it out he could absolutely be one of the more dominant relievers on the team.  If Guerra shoves in ST he either makes the team, or at least doubles his trade value.

The other reason you dont trade a reliever until the end of Spring Training, injuries...  Strahm has already pretty much told people he is starting the year on the IL (Last week he told Ben/Woods that his goal was to start throwing by the end of ST), so that frees up a spot.  Theres rumblings that Kela isnt 100% after an injury last year and thats why he signed for such a low amount but who knows.

Best case scenario, everyone does excellent in Spring Training, no new injuries, and you have to trade a Stammen/Guerra/Williams sad but as the great Bud Black always said "thats baseball"

I've suspected Strahm might be IL for awhile based on the #'s in the pen.  That would explain Kela's deal being SO low too.

Pretty sure if everyone is healthy at the end of ST, Preller will try to make some deals to at least get some value back for the DFA candidates. Since he is not going to deal one of the “better” RP to keep a “lesser” RP ... don’t expect to get much of a return for a “lesser” RP who is out of options.

So, expect Preller to deal for the more high ceiling obscure prospect in A ball (or lower) to get the greatest value. Doubt he can get a near term 4th OF type that can be tucked in AAA for call-up that is better than O’Grady, Azocar, Kohlway, or Ruta (guessing that may be the EP OF).

Stammen is a unique problem ... nobody is going to take his $4MM (if you consider what some of the better FA RP signed for this winter). Preller is not going to give a good prospect just to move the money since it appears money is not the current issue but keeping prospects may be. IF Stammen is moved, it is probably for an obscure minor leaguer with the Padres eating $2MM +. Although would not be surprised if Stammen / Padres work out a Kinsler type arrangement with Stammen retiring and getting a Padres’ non-playing job. Stammen seems to have more going for himself than on-field play and at his age might be a good transition opportunity to his future.

Well ST may have fun with RP (pitching in general).

1. 5 or 6 SP (and is Lamet healthy and can Paddack return healthy)

2. 13 or 14 man pitching staff

3. Mix of short vs. long RP

4. Mix of LHRP vs. RHRP

5. Who is heathy in the pen (Kela? Strahm?)

6. Can a good ST offset a weak past track record if all the RP are not worked the same?

7. Will a prospect (one with options) push his way into consideration if some of the “fringe” candidates don’t look good?

8. Will the Padres “carry” a RP to try to develop his upside while at the same time trying to win the NL West ... or go with the best mix to win now?

I basically said the same thing about Guerra......this guy is going to blossom....I don't understand why certain people here are so quick to blow people out or discount them or whatever....with so many question marks in the bullpen....Guerra is the last guy I would get rid of just because

If Guerra can find some control (I know, I know, how many times have you heard that before), he would be unbelievable. A late bloomer to pitching, I would keep him. His potential is just too high IMHO. I'm not saying he's Sandy Koufax, but Sandy didn't seemed to figure his control problems out until he was 25. Guerra is 25. Even if he's the last guy in the pen, I would keep him.

No, at the end of Spring Training was what I was saying.

Of course you wait to see who performs and earns a spot and who stays healthy

It's not about "wanting" to move Guerra but when the team is ready to compete for a World Series you gotta run with the best arms who are ready now.

With no options if Guerra isn't quite ready what do you do?

Send someone else down or to the waiver wire who "is" ready?

Or hope he gets through waivers(he won't)

So the best option "might" be to trade him to get some value.

AJ surprised all of us by adding two more back end relievers....can only keep 8 total.
