If all the pitchers magically stay healthy you phantom IL one of them until they are, problem solved

Watching the press conference, something inside of me asks, "Is this Kansas?" And the answer is, "No, this is heaven."

OAK has just put Dusting Fowler, a CFer that has control until 2025 up for DFA. Could he be of interest to SD? He must be out of options, and would create a move for a 40 man spot, could IL Lawson still I believe. However, that could help with our LF issue that arises when Pham becomes a FA. Grisham could slide to LF, and Fowler could take over in CF. Of course, that would probably mean the end of Mateo; however, Fowler does have a very nice set of stats in MiL, and only just turned 26.

Probably not ... out of minor league options / LHH / did not hit well in his ML time (2018) plus not sure he is a better CF defensively than Grisham. Sort of a version of O'Grady (but O'Grady has options).

If interested, Padres may want to see if he clears waivers and try to sign him to a minor league deal.

Once upon a time was a good prospect with the NYY(?) but big injury did him in. There will be abundant options to replace Pham in 2022 after this season.

Greg Allen DFA'd by the NYY. Wonder if all the teams pass on him, if he signs a MiL deal if he returns to SD?

Given the CF options for AAA ... might make sense to resign him with his ML experience on a minor league deal just in case. Only 27, can run, good defense, and at least one OK ML season (2018) so a bit more than a typical journeyman minor league option.

I guess a bit depends on what the Padres thought of him in his Padre stint at the alternate site last year ... clearly they did not see enough to call him up with expanded rosters.

Even if he signs a MiL deal ... might he prefer to sign (if offered) with a team that has a better chance of needing an OF for call-up to refresh him ML career? A lot of teams seem thin in CF ... but could say that about the Padres for 2021 .... so should have suitors on a minor league deal with an invite to ML ST camp.

The only reason I thought he might pick SD, is didnt he grow up in SD?

NYY clearly viewed his as Brett Gardner "insurance" & probably hoping he goes unclaimed.  It would be funny if we just straight claimed him  = Extract an Upper level minors P from them for nothing.

I know our roster is full, but it wouldn't be completely insane to do so.  Allen is a better defensive CF than any of our bench options now, and given he's CF capable, likely a better defensive LF than both Pham & Profar.  If he were the last guy on the bench, he could PR like Mateo, but also be a defensive sub in LF.  Mateo is more INF versatile (& obviously faster), but really feels blocked by & redundant to Profar & Kim; he really needs to be on an AL/DH team where he can play & develop in MLB.

Pads choices:

  • 60-day IL Lawson vs optioning him.  Would cost more $ & service time.
  • DFA a RP at this point.  Would put Allen in competition with Mateo (& O'Grady) for 1 bench spot.
  • Accept the likely inevitability that Mateo isn't going to make roster & DFA him now vs. later to hopefully maximize trade return before teams have played a ST game/still assembling 40-man rosters.  Could look at James Reeves the LHP obtained from NYY as "part of" this return, since we already have him.

Allen just returning on a Minors deal is possible, but doesn't work as well:  him being out of options makes him a poor "callup" choice unless someone is on IL for an extended time.   i.e. Allen wouldn't get selected for a 15-day IL, because then he'd be have to be DFA again when back to minors, which could mean losing him in -season as a depth option.
