Clevinger to 60 day IL to make room for Melancon on the 40 man.

Moreland to the As as well

For $2.25M, add that to the .5M that SD paid in the buyout, and he is making $250K less than if SD would have picked up his option.

But A's get the "discount".  Moreland only loses 250K but A's "save" 750K on 3 MM = 25% Salary drop.   "# games".

This seems like a pretty good value signing to me.   Obviously he had to be in the AL

We have been thinking when Kela is added to the 40 ... Wingenter to the 60 day IL was going to be offsetting move now that Clevinger went on the 60 for Melancon.

However, did see that the Padres could instead put Lawson on the 60 day. There must be some "strategic" motivation ... not sure what. We expect Wingenter out the entire season but expected Lawson would be pitching at sometime in 2021.

I guess if they went with Lawson on the 60 now ... and he is ticketed to AA with a season starting in May then gets a long rehab period to pitch and would come off mid-season. From now until then, Wingenter is on the 40 but if a roster slot is needed he can go on the 60 easily. Deferring any other move off the roster until Lawson is coming off .... enough time for someone else needed a 60 day IL stint. That approach does not alter the 2021 trajectory for either Wingenter or Lawson.

Might make sense.

Have not seen this confirmed but the Kela deal reported at $1.2MM / 1 year.

With that, the Luxury Tax Payroll number moves to $204MM with Tatis, Melancon, and Kela.

Got the impression that Preller is done ... for now ... with major league adds. Probably now will spend his time doing what he likes and does some scouting / player evaluation in ST camp and in the Dominican Republic and at College games and at HS games.

Hard to tell until we see the adds through the year but beyond on-field skills, the Padres seem to be adding players that have media / fan positive personalities .... good for the marketing and gaining more fans for the team long run.

Clearly Tatis is a media / fan darling ... but everything I have heard about Darvish and Snell, they fit that mold. Profar, based on watching him in the dougout, is a real energetic upbeat type.

Machado / Hosmer may have baseball talent and may be good in the clubhouse but neither really connect with the mass of fans on a personality basis.

Building a club that wins consistently and is fun to watch will get the national media covering the team more ... gaining more national fans .... more fans should induce more companies to advertise (at bigger prices tag).

Also, don’t under-estimate the potential financial benefit of adding Darvish and Kim ... both “stars” in their home countries. Padres gaining a major Pacific Rim presence ... and fans ... only to be solidified by a fun Tatis and a fun team. Not sure but as I understand, US merchandising is shared among the teams BUT international merchandise sold is 100% to the club.

Tatis (Latin America) ... Darvish (Japan) ... Kim (Korea) ... Padres need to find the next Mexican super star to lock in that world leadership.

I understand that the Padres have a new marketing director ... what is telling the new director is from Disney ... a company that has a world-wide presence which should give the Padres the talent to expand their brand.

Have not seen this confirmed but the Kela deal reported at $1.2MM / 1 year.

That's a potential steal!   So it's 4.2 -6.2 MM for Melancon AND Kela, with 1 MM not till after the season (buyout MM) vs. Rosenthal's 1/11 with near certainty some is deferred....   basically 2 for half the price of 1 is tough to argue.

Rosenthal projects much more dominant than either, but not sure why Kela THIS low if he was almost ready to come back at end of 2020.  Just the injury risk?  Worth mentioning he still has options too.  At that price, not a $ issue to do so.

I feel MM & KK are replaced already next year by already on roster:  Espinoza, Thompson, Wingenter.  Plus hiding (2nd) TJ recovery big arm Nick Burdi on a 2 yr minors deal too.

Doesn't seem like Pads are very $ concerned, but with the overstuffed bullpen...

If Melancon is worth 3 - 5 MM, I think better than given credit for Stammen (always RP IP leaderboard, healthy middle inning eater) is worth 2 - 2 .5 MM.   That would be trading Stammen standalone for a minor/non prospect, and eating half of his '21 salary + his buyout in '22.  Sounds "pointless", but there's just not enough room in the pen.

Doing this move would essentially be "exchanging" 2 MM of Stammen for Melancon's 2 MM base salary.  But MM's incentive max is 2 MM  vs Stammen's 500K.  And end up paying 1 MM buyouts on both.

My San Diego Padres have a $200 million payroll.

To think I used to believe them when they said $100 mil was the limit.

Remember the “payroll will start with a 4” days?

Wow...what a time we live in.

I had actually (willingly) forgotten that... unbelievable!!

In ACTUAL $$$ really being paid out this year, we are probably "only" @ 170 MM+   🙂

... depends what Kim's 1st year salary is (think it will be 3-4 MM range, not 7 MM), and how much of the 10 MM Signing bonus Tatis gets this year.  Could be all, but I doubt it.

Usually do it by the guy who is furthest away....   but either way, he is a 3rd 60-IL candidate.

Could Pads be creating a spot for a DFA/minor trade with Oakland here?

"..A trade or two is likely coming, however, as the A’s will need to open three spots on the 40-man roster once the Yusmeiro Petit, Romo, Rosenthal and Moreland deals are official. Trading away some of their outfield depth seems likely"

They have some interesting prospects on 40-man not on their Depth Chart:

  • Luis Barrera (L)  #7 MLB.com   70 run, +Hit, +Defender, plays all 3, but 'maybe better corner.  Probably not trading him
  • Greg Diechmann (L)  A#12    + Power.  Strictly RF.  Might help next year, but not CF 2021 needs
  • Skye Bolt (S)  #15    Primarily CF.  Projects as 4th OF  55: F/A/ Run 50 Power 45 Hit decent plate discipline
  • Ka'ai Tom (L)  N.R.  .270 /.360 / .444 Career Minors.  Majority LF but > 1,200 IP @ CF

Unfortunately 3 of 4 are LH, but still optionable CF (except Diechmann) depth we lack right now.   A good fit not on 40-man:

  • Buddy Reed (S) #23  CF  70 Run 65 Field 60 Arm.... 40 Hit & Power

But as their only Non roster invite OF, he's probably the last guy they'd trade... especially back to us!
