Feb. 17: Melancon will be guaranteed $3MM on the deal, tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. He’ll earn a $2MM salary in 2021, and there’s a $1MM buyout on an option for the 2022 season.

=============

Sound like a pretty good deal at $3MM ... maybe even better if he throws well and the club option for 2022 is also "reasonable".

FWIW, Cassavell has an article on the SD page and his forecast (barring injury) is 9 guys make the pen out of ST.

Pagan, Pomeranz, Melancon, Kela, Adams, Johnson, Morejon, Strahm, and Stammen. Leaving Guerra, Hill, and Castillo on the outside looking in. I disagree with Morejon, as I think he returns to starter status in MiL. Hill and Castillo have options, so they can start the season in MiL. Leaving Guerra, taking the spot that Cassavell slated for Morejon.

Keeping Guerra over Morejon shorts the staff on that 6th SP/spot starter/long relief (not Strahm / Stammen based on their pasts) ... also, the pen only has two LHP (Pomeranz, Strahm) and that reduces some favorable match-ups vs LHH line-ups.

I can easily see Hill and Castillo being optioned and poised for call-up. Hill is useful but not a key ... Castillo has not pitched for so long, he needs to be reintroduced to pitching in the minors (and his work load controlled).

Agree that the preferred choice on Morejon is a starter in the minors ... but that may get overridden by the need for the best 26 man roster if they believe they really need that 6th SP / long relief and LHP.

I could see Morejon making the 26 and Guerra making the 26 IF Stammen is moved and Mateo is moved to make room for the "extra" RP. Given Guerra's history he could be both the 13 position player AND the 14th pitcher ... neither would get used much except in emergency / blowout situations. Guerra is TWO for the price of ONE.

Feb. 17: Melancon will be guaranteed $3MM on the deal, tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. He’ll earn a $2MM salary in 2021, and there’s a $1MM buyout on a a mutual option for the 2022 season, Heyman adds. The contract allows Melancon to earn another $2MM via incentives.

Mutual options are rarely exercised by both sides ... so for practical purposes a 1 year deal that will settle between $3MM and $5MM depending on incentives earned ... probably innings based.

Can we go back and find the part of this thread when we discussed how if SD would just bump the payroll to $135M?

HAHAHAHAHAHA 🙂

Hard to tell until we see the adds through the year but beyond on-field skills, the Padres seem to be adding players that have media / fan positive personalities .... good for the marketing and gaining more fans for the team long run.

Clearly Tatis is a media / fan darling ... but everything I have heard about Darvish and Snell, they fit that mold. Profar, based on watching him in the dougout, is a real energetic upbeat type.

Machado / Hosmer may have baseball talent and may be good in the clubhouse but neither really connect with the mass of fans on a personality basis.

Building a club that wins consistently and is fun to watch will get the national media covering the team more ... gaining more national fans .... more fans should induce more companies to advertise (at bigger prices tag).

Also, don’t under-estimate the potential financial benefit of adding Darvish and Kim ... both “stars” in their home countries. Padres gaining a major Pacific Rim presence ... and fans ... only to be solidified by a fun Tatis and a fun team. Not sure but as I understand, US merchandising is shared among the teams BUT international merchandise sold is 100% to the club.

Tatis (Latin America) ... Darvish (Japan) ... Kim (Korea) ... Padres need to find the next Mexican super star to lock in that world leadership.

Listening to MLN on XM, they have been ranking the Top 10 at each position. I did not hear SP or C, I have heard 3B, SS, 2B, and 1B. On the station list, Machado is #5, Tatis is #1, Cronenworth is #9, and Hosmer just out of the top 10 at #12. Especially after last season, and his track record minus 2019, I think Machado is ranked a little low. However, they are basically saying we have the best combo on the left side of the INF, and the right side is not too shabby either. If Cro/Kim produce and Hosmer repeats last season, I believe we have the best INF package in baseball this season.

Side note, Dodgers did not have a 2B on this list.

Rosenthal to OAK for 1 year / $11MM.

I guess his window was closing and the ask of a multi-year deal just was not going to happen.

In a surprise move, OAK signs Rosenthal for 1 year at $11M.

Moreland to the As as well

Moreland to the As as well

For $2.25M, add that to the .5M that SD paid in the buyout, and he is making $250K less than if SD would have picked up his option.
