Mets come to an agreement with Pillar ... no terms yet. Now Pillar and Almora can cover CF ... better than Nimmo who was not good in CF (but good in LF). Conforto in RF.

Mets end up with a “extra” pretty good bat Dominic Smith who was in LF but should be at 1B except Alonso is at 1B. Maybe they are betting on the DH coming for 2021.

Mets are looking for SP pitching (they are also deep in on Rosenthal for the pen) ... maybe a trade for that SP.

Don’t see a match for the Padres. Mets can’t deal Almora until sometime mid-season as I recall because he signed as a FA this winter.

There goes that idea...     one of those "see how it turns out" deals.   Pads may be on the lookout for either a 1 yr band aid type guy in ST maybe in trade for RP, or a longer term potential 4th OF with wheels?  Preller is EITHER confident he can find a deal like this & likely has already drilled down deep for possibilities... and/or he/the Pads are way higher on their internal options, esp @ CF than I am.

Smart $ on Preller 🙂

It might be a long shot, could Jacob Nix be in the mix for the 6th man/long relief duty. Really nice article today in the UT about him. He is sounding confidently humble about his revised mechanics and physical regimen that has increased his fastball into the upper 90s, and increased the performance of his breaking stuf.

Unfortunately, he still has a partially torn UCL.

Quote from UT,

During a 40-pitch session last week, with batters from Hope International University mostly walking away shaking their heads after trying to hit against him, Nix’s fastball sat between 95 and 97 mph, a good 2-4 mph faster than his average in ’18.

He has an invite to ST, so I think it sounds like he is good to go.

These contracts are getting more difficult to follow. Pillar’s deal COULD be 1 year $5MM guaranteed or 2 years $10MM or something in between based on how player and team options are exercised. Too late in the evening for my brain to work though the if then scenarios.

If Jacob Nix is pitching meaningful innings for the Padres this year, then something went seriously wrong.  Considering he isnt on the 40 man he would have to behind Morejon, Baez, Lawson, Weathers, and probably a few others including Gore.

Puff pieces in the local newspaper are great for hyping up players.  I am not sure what Acee will do this year if he cant write 20 articles about how Hedges changed his swing this year and will dominate

Played with some numbers of splitting up innings over a full season among SP/RP.

162 games X 9 innings = 1458 +/- innings to cover.

IF a team goes with 5 SP at 5 innings per start ... 150 innings per SP (assumed max).... total from SP = 810 innings. The RP need to cover 648 innings. If a 13 pitcher staff, 8 RP need to average 80 +/- innings (pretty high for almost all RP historically). IF a 14 pitcher staff, 9 RP need to average 72 +/- innings (still pretty high).

IF a team goes with 6 SP at 6 innings per start ... 150 innings +/- per SP (assumed max) ... total from SP = 972 innings. RP need to cover 486 innings. If a 13 pitcher staff, 7 RP need to average 69 +/- innings. If a 14 pitcher staff, 8 RP need to average 61 +/- innings.

With the Padres not having a lot of flexibility in moving arms up/down to keep fresh plus some quality to use as a 6th SP ... would seem the 6 SP / 8 RP route would be best keep the  pen as fresh as possible into the playoffs.

6 SP ... 6 RP (in 2 alternating pods of 3) ... plus 2 “extra” RP to fill as needed giving the “pod” arms some extra rest ... especially in blowouts or if a SP gets in trouble early.

If there is still a chance for the DH is there still a chance for an expanded major league roster?

EVERYONE is concerned with innings this year due to the short season you would think this would still be in discussion.

Going from 26 to 28 would sure make things a lot easier to manage.

I could just see a lot of pitcher injuries this season being blamed on this.

If the owners and MPBPA were smart, this should take about 5 mins.

Owners - we want more playoff teams. More money to us.

MLBPA - we want DH and 30 man rosters. More money for players.

Meet in the middle. Expanded playoffs, add DH, and 28 man roster through July, 30 man roster Aug/Sept(when pitchers are running out of innings), 28 man playoff rosters.

Everyone wins, including fans.

Yeah, it's interesting.  It's either 1/5 if Mets opt out next year OR 2/6.5 if Pillar opts to remain a Met next year, OR 2/10 if the Mets opt to keep Pillar.  Pillar opting in "only" gives him +1.5 MM for an extra season of play, but I guess protects him from poor performance or injury.  It's a shorter, lower $ value version of Profar's deal... and does make Profar's continue to look like a significant overpay.

The real # that matters though is that the Mets are paying Pillar 3.6 MM to play the 2021 season (1.4 buyout or other scenarios AFTER the season).  To me, this seems a reasonable # for a guy of his pedigree to be your 4th/5th OF including primary backup CF, and the "4th" man on the bench.  Imagine there's ONE non-C position player on IL during season... how's the signing look now?   I realize the Pads may be up against their $ limits here, but this IS the type of signing the LAD would do.

I know this is the best by far Pads team on paper I've seen in 20 years of fandom.  I don't want the rug to get pulled out from under by vulnerability at one position.  I'll trust in Preller he knows something about the internal/external options we don't... he sure did when he traded for Grisham!

WHOA!!   If Nix (for 40 pitches) against non-pro players is showing the stuff reported, and Padres brass is seeing it by video & in person... why would Acee or any reporter exaggerate it?  I know what you mean on the "I'm going to change my approach this year" puff articles, but this doesn't seem like one of those...   Harsh words.

BUT I found this article VERY interesting reading between the lines... obviously b/c Jake has matured mentally & his stuff seems to be way better... but think him wanting to tell his side AND stubbornly saying "I'm a SP" when he's objectively 10th on the depth chart does have an ulterior motive.   Is he basically saying to the Padres "thanks for sticking with me, but I wouldn't mind getting traded to a team (28 others) with less SP depth"???   Is he deliberately with Acee's (... or even Preller/Pads by tipping Acee) help marketing himself to other teams by putting himself on their "trade-ar"??

I also kind of take issue with the SP insistence from a guy who by his own admission let himself get fat & lazy, and would have been released by many teams due to the bad PR late night talk show punchline black eye to the org.  Given his own lack of discipline physically (think that extra weight helped your injuries?) and the bad PR, should be grateful/humble for ANY path back to MLB.   I GET the "look how competitive I am" thing, but it rings hollow & reminds me of some of Paddack's self-diagnosis last year; selfish & lacking in situational/self awareness.
