(Should note although some may physically pitch more the real question is will the maintain effectiveness ... arms will tire or get injured).
So, what formula works best for pitchers (and for success of the team):
Option 1: 5 SP going 5 innings per start = 150 innings per SP
Option 2: 6 SP going 6 innings per start = 150 innings per SP
Option 1 wears down the pen quicker covering 4 innings vs. 3 innings per game (33% increase) ... probably requires a lot of RP change outs
Option 2 saves the pen some but requires the 6th best SP handling about 26 starts vs the #1-5 SP.
Might depend by team based on the mix / quality of the staffs ... but going to be an issue for everyone. I am beginning to lean (for the Padres) the 6 man rotation since think the candidates for the 6 SP can be more productive than whomever becomes the 6th inning guys to support a 5 man rotation.
I think its going to be a combo of the two options. 6 man rotation, going 5 innings per start. I think you will see almost all SPs, especially Lamet, have "calf strains" for about 2 weeks at different times through the season this year. Then with a call up for spot starts from Bore, Morejon, Weathers, and maybe even Baez. Gotta save some bullets for the post season.

Quote from Brian Connelly on February 12, 2021, 9:08 amThe Mets have designated catcher Ali Sanchez for assignment, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reports on Twitter.
Sanchez, 24, reached the majors briefly in 2020, getting enough time to record his first hit but little more. Sanchez earned that opportunity primarily with his glovework, as he carries a marginal .259/.317/.331 batting line over his minor-league career.
Given the extreme lack of upper level C plus now needing to "always" have a C on the taxi squad, shouldn't we claim/minor trade if neccy for this guy? I realize we have a full roster, and that Wingenter is potentially way > this guy as a depth option, but have to get through the season. He was DFA on the 10th, so I don't think there's enough time to "wait out" ST starting & roster spots opening with IL moves. Not going to see very many C's cut/moved off rosters in ST.

Here are the remaining FA Catchers that are still available, Robinson Chirinos (36),Tyler Flowers (35),Jeff Mathis (38),Rene Rivera (37), Matt Wieters (35), all of whom have a vast amount of ML experience and should be able to had for a very low salary, and probably be happy to have a job of some sort. Probably come in on a MiL deal with an invite to ST, with the guarantee (wink, wink) that they will be the taxi squad guy at the end of ST, when a 40 man spot opens up. That way we dont need to make a 40 man move now, or trade a "what if" guy for a "what if" guy for the taxi squad.

Quote from fenn68 on February 12, 2021, 9:59 amI am OK with Webster Rivas as the non-roster 4th catcher insurance .... lot of experience with the Padres prospect pitchers / staff and Padres’ approach.
If they have to get past Nola, Caratini, Campusano and use the 4th catcher .... not sure it makes that much difference.

Quote from Brian Connelly on February 12, 2021, 10:59 amDon't think those long time MLB players view the "opportunity" to be on a Taxi squad for Minors pay & a $100 per diem the same way Rivas or Ali Sanchez would... would have to pay them significant $ in minors, and we already have Campusano.
Issue is really more one of org depth. Could control Sanchez. Any player WE get on a waiver claim would then be extremely unlikley to be claimed if we subsequently DFA them; almost every team in MLB would have already "passed" on them... making it likely we could keep him in system. BUT have to have 1 open roster spot to play that game if you're Preller, and if 29 other teams are passing, obviously talking marginal talent

Quote from fenn68 on February 12, 2021, 11:28 amSince I expect the "taxi squad" catcher to be just a COVID emergency filler (someone tested positive the morning of the game) .... we might see a total "non-prospect" minor league veteran carrying that role (maybe bouncing between the taxi squad and Peoria). Thinking someone like Cantu or Seagle ... 24+ year olds who have been in the system for a couple of years so know the Padres' system.
That keeps the real call-up insurance playing in the minors if needed for an extended time.

The Padres have agreed to a deal with free-agent reliever Mark Melancon, reports Dennis Lin of The Athletic (Twitter link). The deal with Melancon, an ISE Baseball client, will become official once he’s passed a physical.

Quote from fenn68 on February 12, 2021, 11:50 amWill have to see the terms of the deal .... and who gets DFA/dealt.
Melancon has had his moments ... so a decent option to upgrade the pen. Actually the fact that he is an extreme ground ball pitcher .... with the Padres plus INF defense .. might be very useful when a double play is needed or matched against an extreme fly ball hitter or if trying to avoid that critical sac fly. A good balance to Pagan ... Johnson ... Altavilla ... Williams as RH extreme fly ball pitchers ... even Adams is more a fly ball pitcher.
