Will be interesting to see how he does in 21’....and I’m fine that it isn’t with us.

Guessing Cruz is holding for 2 years / $40MM ($20MM AAV) .... probably will get $18MM / 1 year from MINN.

If the Padres were going that high on AAV ... just go for Ozuna and his big bat.

Really doubt the money would be there and not sure who they would not have signed (traded for) to cover that money.

Padres have added about $53MM of 2021 AAV:

Darvish ... $23MM

Snell ... $11MM

Kim ... $7MM

Profar ... $7MM

Musgrove ... $4.5MM

Caratini ... $1.3MM

Which combo of players would get eliminated if the $20MM went to Cruz ... and does that make the Padres (even with a DH) a better team? Just adding the $20MM to the current $170MM+/- is not an option.

Only mention Cruz because of the earlier reported interest AJ had in him and we were discussing the DH.

Obviously his ask was too high and the DH was still in question so Preller did the wise thing and spent it elsewhere.

Bob Nightengale has released this on twitter, the details about Profars details.

2021: $3.5 million and a $2.5 million signing bonus. 2022: $6.5M player option or $1M buyout. 2023: $7.5M player option or $1M buyout. 2024: $10M mutual option or $1M buyout. $350K every time traded.

Apparently Preller is not done adding SP options. According to an article in the STL by Derrick Goold, Wainright is sitting on multiple offers including one from SD!! Could Wainright be a part of a 6 man rotation in SD, or mean that someone else is a trade possibility, such as Paddack? Thoughts?

Well it is Preller ... and he is always attempting to add talent (for the right price).

So if true ... the “offer” is probably on the low side and will be easily topped by some other team. He will not “chase” the bid up.

However if he gets Wainwright .... the 6 man rotation is an option they have been “considering” per some reports (as all teams seem more concerned about SP being able to pitch the needed innings for a full 2021).  Then there is also protection against Lamet not being ready and/or Paddack not rebounding to 2019 quality. Also, in a year expected to win ... takes the pressure off the prospects to deliver out of the box.

If they got Wainwright and kept a 5 man rotation ... not out of the question to see Paddack in the minors to start the season to work on his command / 3rd pitch then have him called up first if someone injured or when the choose to go with a 6 man rotation mid-season.

Got to admit a 5 man rotation of Darvish, Snell, Lamet, Wainwright, Musgrove  could be compelling. $5-8MM/1 year? He was really good last season but 39.

Don’t see another trade with a current SP ... if playing for 2021 is the objective ... no need big enough to warrant a deal of quality SP. Maybe a trade chip at the trade deadline?

It's a very clever structure.  I thought he might get 6/7/8 so his salary this year would be slightly > 5.7 MM (prorated) of 2020.

But it's really only 4.5 MM in 2021.  The signing bonus is paid out as 1.0 MM this year, 1.5 MM in 2022.  So on paper, the Padres are actually paying Profar 1.2 MM less than last season... IN 2021.

Next year if Profar opts out, he will get 1 MM buyout + remaining 1.5 MM S.B. = 2.5 MM "dead $" to Pads.  So he's guaranteed at least 1/7 from the Pads, but only half of that 7 is salary.  Profar's decision next year is if he wants to opt out of 2/14, then his decision in 2023 is whether to opt out of 1/7.5

If he stays for 3 years, the mutual option is near certain to get declined by one side, and he gets the 1 MM buyout in 2024.

I haven't seen a breakdown of Kim's contract (like these details) anywhere, but strongly suspect it will be backloaded to help the Padres "digest" the 5.5+ MM posting fee I assume they had to pay in full right away.  The obvious structure is :  4/6/8/10.   But given how Profar's deal was structured it might even be more heavily backloaded.

Does he really get $1M if he opts out, doesnt he just become a FA again? Or is that a clause for SD to give him $1M and he is a FA again? As in team option?

They're player options, but if he chooses not to exercise them the team still pays him 1M. It's a terrible contract.

Sounds like a very creative contract effectively using those $1MM opt out payments as a deferral mechanism along with the bonus distribution.

Might needed that to lower 2021 cash out while still getting Profar to sign (apparently away from Boston). Also, from Profar’s perspective if there is a shortened season and salaries are prorated .... the bonus / buyout money is not impacted.

Pretty much on the margin money-wise but interesting never the less.
