No DH, no expanded playoffs.

Still just negotiations .... probably not resolved until March 31st.

If the owners really want the expanded playoffs they will have to do a lot better in their future offers to the union.

It’s all a sham.

Expanded playoffs helps the players as well.

So the owners are offering something that helps the players to get something that helps them both.

So of course the players say No cause they know they can get even more

🙄

Well someone didn't like my comment....lol

I'd love to hear why?

Even after I said this I heard the guys on MLB radio basically agreeing with me that expanded playoffs "helps" the players it doesn't hurt them.

Their reasoning(same as mine) is first of all because if more teams make the playoffs then more teams will think they are "on the verge" of the playoffs in the offseason and will go get a player or two to increase their chances. Also, players like making th eplayoffs...besides money its the most important thing.Plus, the players make more money for making the postseason.

I'd love to hear someones take on how expanded playoffs "hurts" players...because otherwise both the DH and expanded playoffs benefit the players so it makes no sense(unless they want more) why they wouldn't already be in agreement.

IMO of course

I agree. I think the players are cutting off their nose to spite their face. I dont think that Tony Clark is the right person for his position.

“Help” the players ... yes ... but the counter argument the division of all the increased revenues is skewed dramatically towards the owners who as I recall get all the increased TV revenues (big) and only share the gate revenues with the players (with some supplemental kicker (not so big).

DH does little for either side ... despite the storyline of increasing pay to cover the DH as a regular. Actually dollar impact is minimal. 13 position players before .... 13 position players after and then consider that most teams are NOT paying premium for a DH but rotating players through that role ... basically the bench gets more playing time.

Can’t prove either side but the counter to an expanded playoff with move teams to spend more to contend ... teams that see making the playoffs will be less of a challenge with their current roster may choose NOT to spend more if they are on the bubble.

Should note that the owner’s proposal had a number of other issues included who just focusing on the DH / playoffs may be missing some critical issues for the Union.

Add that should not forget the CBA ends in December ... and this 2021 attempt to alter the current CBA could be a precedent for that negotiation (and the loss of some negotiating power ... both sides).

A pretty basic rule in negotiations .... the first “offer” from ownership is heavily skewed towards the interests of the owners and should be rejected with the understanding the owners have built in negotiation room in order to settle at a more balanced position.

Also, with the uncertainty of a Opening Day on April 1 ... all the issues the owners put on the table now may be better argued in the context of the issues surrounding a shortened season ... more give and take opportunities to settle.

Check back in 2 months.

Well, I've heard the argument that if you dramatically increase the playoff field to 16 teams like last year, it actually pushes players salaries downward, since over half the teams are going to make it in... "why spend more"

SOME validity (especially when you factor in that 5-8 teams are always tanking.... oh, sorry, "rebuilding").  Makes it more like 16 out of 24 teams make playoffs.  If you're good, you know you'll make it.  If mediocre, you still have a really good chance.  It doesn't make financial sense to spend 35 MM on Trevor Bauer to put you "over the top".

I don't believe it was going to 16.....I believe 14.

I just fail to believe the Players are against expanding playoffs and are instead using it as a negotiating tool.

Which is to be expected.

As Fenn said....no one takes the first offer.

But...its only a few weeks from ST(hopefully)...let's not drag all this out and negotiate in the media all over again like last year.

Luckily with the signing of Profar I think we are fine either way....but,imagine if the DH was approved weeks ago and we signed Nelson Cruz for two years instead.

For me, I am glad we didn't sign Cruz, he is so old, at some point he is just going to drop off big-time.

I get that.....but if he’s just hitting I’m thinking he’d be good for another year maybe two.

Reflexes . . . reflexes
