Using Abrams (maybe with Weathers) should significantly lower the quality of the 3rd/4th pieces in a deal.
If winning in the next two years is important ... better chance with Reynolds in LF than with Abrams / Weathers playing somewhere.
I believe that he has played more games in CF than LF, especially last season. So who is the better CFer, Grisham or Reynolds defensively?
If they are close, I think I leave Reynolds in CF since he is a switch hitter and Grisham might need to eventually be platooned against tough lefties. Move Grisham to RF, and Myers back to LF.
Reynolds was a very good CF in 2020 but PITT move him to LF where he ranked as a Top 10 LF. So, could go either way with Grisham who when healthy is also a very good CF. I will take that problem.
According to baseball reference.com Reynolds played more games in LF (37) than CF (17) in 2020, and a 137 games in CF compared to 17 games in LF in 2021. Grisham only played in a 132 games total last season. Maybe Reynolds is more durable than Grisham.

Quote from fenn68 on March 31, 2022, 10:41 amSince he is in his third year was assuming Reynolds was league minimum … but he is a Super 2 and is an arbitration debate with PITT.
His ask is $4.9MM and PITT offered $4.25MM. So those are the outer rails of his 2022 cost. Probably not a deterrent for SD and MAYBE and incentive for the low cost PITT.
Given PITT’s ask from other teams (but did not get them to bite) … a similar ask from SD has to start with Abrams and then include another current / or former Top 100 MLB prospects. So the 2nd is one of Hassell, Gore, Campusano, or Weathers. Then a couple of lesser prospects.
So if Abrams was the headliner … and other teams are not biting on the bigger PITT demand … might not have to include the next two I would not deal (Hassell and Gore) and use Campusano (still don’t see him as the future catcher) or Weathers (who I like but put Gore ahead).
So, Reynolds for Abrams - Weathers - then lesser prospects outside the top 10 such as A.Martinez, Ornelas, and the like? Remember PITT is between not having to trade but not getting their big demand and every year passing Reynolds value goes down if for no other reason than less control and higher contract.

Quote from Randy Manese on March 31, 2022, 10:50 amInclude any minor league prospects BUT Abrams for Reynolds. Abrams has too much value to the Padres in so many ways, including the possibility of playing the OF. Even though Pirates drafted Davis with the #1 pick last year, Campusano is closer to the majors and can also play 1b/dh with projected 20 HR power. If you include Hassell and Weathers and Angeles, that should be an acceptable package for Reynolds. I would not include Merrill in that package. Could switch out Hassell for Wood, if Pirates want to gamble. We're talking about a lot of potential high end prospects in a package, but Abrams is definitely a "NO" for me to trade.

The INF in SD is both loaded and in place for the better part of 4 more years, Machado, Tatis, and Cronenworth.
Abrams value is completely attached to Tatis. IF Tatis is willing to move to the OF, then Abrams has value to SD at SS. If Tatis is not willing to move off SS, then the only value Abrams has to SD is in the OF.
And if SD does not see Abrams in the OF, then he has little value to the ML team in SD. You do not displace two All Stars (Tatis SS or Cronenworth 2B) for a guy that has proved very little in anything above A ball yet, or stayed healthy to this point.
IMO, Hassel has more value than Abrams at this point, based on the position that he plays.....OF.

Quote from fenn68 on March 31, 2022, 12:29 pmI guess the wrinkle in all this is Tatis’ return .. when and in what state of readiness. Padres clearly will not speculate (even if they have a strong feeling).
My feeling is the Padres will not try to move Tatis to the OF (and frankly he may not be as good in the OF as we would hope). However, that is not the main issue … with his left wrist broken … not dealt with for over a month then surgery … all speculation but some doctors are skeptical that in 3 months we will have regained full strength / flexibility and could remain in some level of discomfort. So, IF Tatis is not coming back productive in the second half … we are relying on Kim (we know the issues there) … so potentially for the benefit of winning in 2022, having Abrams as a late season call-up may become critical.
That may be the key piece in not including Abrams. Top line pitching is always critical and in 2022 injuries given these SP are probable and in 2023 the Padres could lose Musgrove, Clevinger, and Martinez … a strong argument for not including Gore.
So keeping Gore and Abrams out of the deal … PITT may be hard to get to deal … so probably no deal. Just don’t see Campusano / Weathers doing it … and really not sure Hassell is someone Padres want to deal. After that group of five … wishful thinking the PITT would value any of others that high.

However, reports are the Preller is burning up the lines in search of an OF … but not going to get a major established talent (really not much available).

If we have to deal Abrams then OK....but "do not" include Hassell.
Abrams/Weathers/2 guys outside top 10.
I think Abrams is going to be a star....but Reynolds "is" already...esp. if he played anywhere outside Pitt.
We have an open window the next few years(hopefully more but) and Reynolds fits this much better than Abrams.
I'd prefer a Weathers/Campusano/Mears/Merrill type deal but I assume Pitt is gonna want a "splash" name like Abrams or Gore to be included.

Quote from sportwarrior on March 31, 2022, 5:48 pmUnder no circumstances do I move Abrams. He is fully capable of transitioning to the outfield or playing 2b while Croney slides over to 1b. I prefer to deal Hassell, and it's not even a particularly close call.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 31, 2022, 6:39 pmI like Abrams too….of course.
But maybe he’s as good as Reynolds in the next few years…..while learning a new position.
My guess Preller agrees with you and that’s why nothings happened.

I suspect that moving Abrams is a no go … but maybe he is and it is the pieces 2 - 4 that take it over the top. Abrams for Reynolds even up (or a couple of minor pieces) is more appealing that Abrams and a couple of Top 10 prospects.
Considering we all seem to think the Padres built this team (and spent all this money) to win / make the playoffs in 2022-23 … doing that with Profar in LF is going to be a challenge and in two years when Abrams becomes the next Reynolds … the pitching staff could be Gore and ??????? (Without major arms near) … also not a recipe for winning. Of course, winning with Reynolds is no slam dunk without Tatis.
The vultures are circling Preller if he does not make the playoff in the next two years.
