Off Season Moves and discussion

Did notice in that same piece the Padres may be dangling pitching for a deal with MINN citing targets of Larnach or Kiriloff. Guessing Kiriloff would be off the table as a projected MINN starter but the did just option Larnach so he could be in play. Larnach is still a very good prospect despite his high K% in his rookie season. 6 years control and league minimum fits the Padres current and future need (post Myers).

IF Paddack and a RP could interest MINN ... something to consider to balance the team. Not sure the fair value with that mix ... so maybe some some tweaks with other players and potentially get Austin Martin who is a pure hitter, INF/OF (not great defense), near ML ready.

Some gambles here (and with the Reynolds idea) based the Padres view of the readiness of Gore and N.Martinez and the health of Clevinger creating a 5 SP and an insurance starter.

So for Reynolds what more do you think it would take in addition to;

Weathers/Campusano/Merrill?

Cause if we can get 4 years of Reynolds and hold on to Abrams/Haskell/Gore/Woods I’d be happy and say “do it”!

I would think that Reynolds moves the needle more than Larnach, Kepler, or Kiriloff.

As you mentioned, if SD doenst see Abrams as an OFer, and Tatis doesnt want to move to the OF, then IMO Abrams has more value as a trade piece than as a Padre.

So, if a deal around Abrams and Weathers gets me Reynolds, I make that trade.

Then you go with a 57 man rotation with Darvish, Musgrove, Clevinger/Gore piggyback, Snell/Paddack piggyback, Martinez. That way we save the bullets of Clevinger and Snell for the playoffs.

At the risk of heresy ... considering Reynolds in a top tier LF (all-star, 4 years control, league minimum) and the Padres are set for years in the middle INF with Tatis / Cronenworth) ... using Abrams (unproven in ML with 6 years control) in a deal might make sense if his "future" is in the OF (if he hits in the ML). Using Abrams (maybe with Weathers) should significantly lower the quality of the 3rd/4th pieces in a deal.

If winning in the next two years is important ... better chance with Reynolds in LF than with Abrams / Weathers playing somewhere.

I believe that he has played more games in CF than LF, especially last season. So who is the better CFer, Grisham or Reynolds defensively?

If they are close, I think I leave Reynolds in CF since he is a switch hitter and Grisham might need to eventually be platooned against tough lefties. Move Grisham to RF, and Myers back to LF.

Brock Holt was just granted his release from the Braves, got to wonder if he could be a fit for SD? Back up middle INF and corner OF and a decent LH bat.

Reynolds is clearly the first choice for impact … but PITT has to buy into the offer (whatever SD sees as the max). PITT will be more flexible on prospects in the deal given they are going nowhere near term.

A MINN deal maybe the fall back … for a lesser option. Since they are dealing to contend now really doubt they see Kiriloff and Kepler in play (both projected starters) leaving Larnach and Martin the pieces they would deal … especially if Paddack is the Padre trade chip. Kepler may also not really fit the Padres’ objective with only 2 control years and a contract that would send them over the tax threshold. MINN would have to eat some salary or take another player with a decent salary (a player not named Hosmer or Myers).

Both routes are at least feasible given the needs of PITT and MINN coupled with the pieces SD can deal. Just no idea how those pieces are valued by all the parties.

Reynolds was a very good CF in 2020 but PITT move him to LF where he ranked as a Top 10 LF. So, could go either way with Grisham who when healthy is also a very good CF. I will take that problem.

Got to wonder if there is anything left in the tank for the 33 year old Holt. 2020 and 2021 were not good. Not sure the Padres would pay his demand as veteran to have him hit .210 knowing that when Tatis return Kim fills the INF role. Plus Beaty fill the LHH/OF role if needed.

The more I think about this, and over the last month or so it's been a lot,we "need" to go ahead and make the deal for Reynolds.

As long as they aren't holding out for 2 of our top 4 I think we gotta do it.

It's an All Star leftfielder for "four" years!

Weathers/Campusano/Merrill/Mears.....

Other than Weathers we don't really have a spot in the next couple years for any of these guys anyway.

Add a lower level 5th player if necessary.

PIT was asking for two of MIA top prospects.......so it might have to be Abrams and Weathers, plus 2.
