Off Season Moves and discussion

I don't think Abrams becomes the next Reynolds.  He is more like a young Christian Yelich or Starling Marte.  If we would have put him in the OF from the beginning, he probably would have shown more (and got injured less) than what we've seen from Hassell so far.  All he needs now is a little more patience and pitch recognition in the upper minors to get his OBP up so that his speed can be fully utilized.  If he does that, he would be a great improvement at the top of the line-up with greater consistency than what I believe we'll get over the long run from Grisham, although I do like Grisham irrespective of how he frustrates me with his passiveness at the plate.

If we get Reynolds for Hassell plus others, I think that makes 2022 and the years forward much easier when we drop Myers and Hosmer opts out.  Reynold's a solid power bat and overall very good hitter that would fit quite well in our lineup, anywhere from 2-5 and brings a improved defense to a corner slot.

If we can't get this done soon, let's extend Musgrove and start taking offers for Snell - might find some interesting takers who have OF's to offer.   We could even go after an A's pitcher with some of our other prospects if we think that is necessary before/after we deal Snell - Manaea and Montas are still available.

All this talk about Brian Reynolds....he's only had 2 good seasons at the age of 27? And plays in the band box that is Pittsburgh?

I'm reluctant to part with any of our soon to be Padre regulars( Abrams, Hassell, Campusano) To beat a dead horse yet again, we desperately need cheap, controllable, GOOD production from our own young guys.

Now, if young pitchers( Paddack, Weathers, Knehr, etc.) were the heart of the deal, then maybe.

What is appealing in Reynolds is his .900+ OPS against both RH and LH pitching....and he actually had a .901 OPS at Home and a .924 OPS on the road.So you can't be any more consistent than that which we sure could use......some consistency.

You just put him in LF and bat him 2nd and forget about it for four years.

I would be OK with a Hassell/Campusano/Weathers/Merrill type deal

Gotta be able to coax them without Abrams or Gore. However, they don't need to trade him...so they can just say include them or no deal.

Since it seems very unlikely that the Padres acquire a MAJOR bat for LF via trade or FA ... and not sure I can ID even a marginal upgrade over Profar that is potentially on the market (for a fair price) ... beginning to look the run for the playoffs will be the product of pitching and defense ... given Tatis is out for at least 3 months, Profar in LF, and no reason to expect Hosmer and Myers are other than their "normal".

Defense should be very good with Machado, Kim, Cronenworth, Nola, Grisham. Profar and Myers should be OK. Only really weak link maybe 1B.

Pitching has the talent 1-5 ... they key is their production over the course of a full season. Darvish, Snell, Clevinger, and Musgrove all have received CY Young votes in the past ... Martinez could be a useful sleeper, Gore could be the surprise, and Paddack / Weathers provide ML quality depth. That potential based on past performance and depth should win the Padres a lot of games.

The pen is always a wild card with "under rated" arms turning into productive pieces ... at least for one or two seasons. Suarez may be the surprise this year as closer, Lamet could be great or a bust, Pagan was very good the 1st half of 2021 (and in TB) so could bounce back,  Johnson has been above average, Adams is devastating if his command is there, plus both Wilson and Kopps have the stuff to be called up and produce. So, a lot of "no names" that have the legit potential to form a productive pen.

Can pitching and defense cover a weak offense and get the Padres to the 6th best NL record ... and the playoffs?

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that our offense will not be “weak”.

The loss of Tatis hurts….but we’ve played well in the past when he’s been out and I still believe Grisham is going to go off this year and Myers has his streaks….maybe 22 will be his streak.

Hosmer is Hosmer….Profar always gives good at bats and also always seems clutch.

Kim to me is the weakest link despite his decent ST so far but his defense is excellent and if Abrams isn’t playing SS Kim should be.

edit:And I think we will get a huge upgrade in production from behind the plate this year “if” Nola stays healthy.

Lastly, our DH is one of the better ones in the NL .

Does this move the needle?

I'm sure Smith is better than Profar AND dumping Hosmer's salary would be HUGE!

Anyone like Smith?

Just compared the 2 1B on Stathead.

There does not appear to be a great deal of difference between the 2, production wise. And as bad as Hosmer has been around the bag, I can't imagine there's a big difference in D either.

Looks to be a lateral move, numbers wise BUT again, money savings is $17 million this year alone.

I wonder what impact it'll have in the locker room? The guys obviously like Hosmer. Is Smith a good dude? He's from LA so maybe coming back to SoCal re-energizes him?

Interesting to see if this plays out.

IF, and that’s a big if, that trade happens, why not move Smith back to his natural place at 1B?  Sit him vs lefties to let Alfaro DH and Voit plays first.  Then use the savings on Hos to give Conforto a big one year deal to play LF.  He might not be worth it, but it’s off the books at the end of the year and he couldn’t be worse then our other options.

Yeah, Smith would certainly fit in better at 1B. AND if you can fit Conforto in, you're basically getting 2( Smith and Conforto) for less than the price of 1( Hosmer).

I wonder if there'd be other parts to this, or does getting Paddack appease the Mets enough to make it a straight 2 for 1?

Sounds like a lingering April fool’s article for Mets’ fans..

With Alfonso at 1B and Cano as DH … Mets have zero need to pick-up Hosmer and his contract. However, I will play among since the report suggested there could be more names in the deal discussions.

How about Paddack, Hosmer, and Beaty for Smith and Cano with the Mets eating $10MM of Cano’s contract in each of the next two years? A trade of two bad contracts with both teams staying about the same payroll wise … both teams dealing from “excess” with the Mets getting some pitching depth post DeGrom and the Padres getting some LF/DH depth.

Of course the more straight forward move is Smith straight up for Paddack.
