I heard the same interview, and he sounded like a guy who has tried and failed at making every possible permutation happen in LF. While I appreciate the effort, we're at a point where that quite simply isn't good enough. I fear that we're trying to have our cake and eat it too. That puts us in danger of maintaining our hope at long-term sustainability at the cost of not quite doing enough to make our short and mid term team good enough to truly compete at the highest level in the league.

Has to be tough on Preller (or any GM) trying to fill a hole (known by all the potential trade partners) and at the same time not wanting to over pay for an acquisition that may be a marginal improvement.

Other teams were trying to add OF via trade … and not much moved which suggests not only Preller but other GM concluded the sellers were just asking too much for the better options and just were not interested in the options that were not significant better (for sure) than Profar / Mazara.

I did get in the interview that he is working to a budget … but Siedler could be flexible “for the right player” … good chance the “right player” for a “fair price” was just not there.

Waiting for a surprise release?

Well, I guess to blunt any speculation that Alfaro might be deployed at 1B or LF (he has done both in his career) … Melvin said he only plans for Alfaro as a catcher.

So not sure what that means for Caratini with Nola the #1. Caratini is not a candidate for 1B/LF either. I guess one of the three could DH and deploy Voit at 1B vs. LHP … bench Hosmer. Does not sound like they will bounce Nola around the field unless it is an emergency need. Not a lot of ABs then for 3 catchers.

Maybe Caratini is more on the bubble of the active roster than we have thought … maybe IF they find another bench option for INF and/or OF. Campusano in AAA as the insurance policy?

Preller indicated that there may be more trimming from the ML camp this weekend … and maybe that will lead to some trimming in the minor league camp as AAA gets going on Apr 5.

The players remaining in the ML camp (as with all teams) will start getting work against more of the ML types and we should see some of those “hot” early camp runs cool off against better competition who are rounding in to season shape.

Late next week may be the key for all those bubble players no matter what they have done so far this spring.

Not a big move … but a move:

Padres claim Kyle Tyler (25, RHSP/RP) … DFA Norwood.

Norwood was out of options so ticketed to get DFA at some point … Tyler comes with 3 option years. What is interesting is that I was expecting Norwood and Guerra DFA to be used to open roster space for a couple of non-roster adds for the bench upgrades. So maybe only one offset by Guerra or if more than one add Tatis to the 60 day or there is another roster move afoot (probably another out of option RP).

As for Tyler … 25 who was drafted by the LAA very late round  …pitched well in the minors over 3 seasons SP/RP … got a cup of coffee with LAA last year (did well) … not highly rated prospect in a weak LAA farm system … about a 90-91 FB and a 84ish slider with good control. LAA (who needs pitching) DFA’d him a a week or so ago, claimed by Boston, DFA’s by Boston, claimed by SD.

So, I would expect the Padres use him in AAA … likely the pen … and he becomes a potential yo-yo RP option as needed. Probably better option than Norwood aside from the option issue … Norwood just a velocity and little more. With the max 5 option moves in 2022 for any player … and a good chance there a lot of need as pitchers get injured … and the call-up options exhaust their limits.

SD and LAD complete a trade today for Matt Beatty. SD gets Beatty, and LAD gets River Ryan, a two way player that can pitch and play INF, last season he batted .308/.349/.436 with a homer, two doubles and four stolen bases in 43 plate appearances.

Beatty still has an option left according to MLBTR.

I would imagine that Beatty gets a chance to be the starting LFer allowing Profar to return to super sub, and probably reduces the chance for Mazara to make the team.

Doubt he is the starting LF … maybe platoon or starter IF Profar is needed in the INF.

Like the add of Beaty  but not expecting a lot from any player picked up for an 11th round pick in the rookie league without any other team out bidding. Seems to be a good bat but not a good fielder in LF or 1B. Might spell trouble of Mazara (non-roster).

Putting Pomeranz on the 60 day IL eliminates a move to create a roster spot for any non-roster player. Still could with Tatis, I guess … and Guerra is likely a DFA. Might need a spot if the add a real reserve INF (not thinking Rosario is ready).

A good depth pick-up at 1b-dh but not a defensive presence in the corner OF slots or 1b.  With an option remaining, backs up Voit, if injured, or can occasionally be put in the OF if we put out a ground ball leaning pitcher; may be assigned to El Paso if Mazara pushes back after this trade.

To me, without Mazara, toss up between Alfaro or Beaty on who would go to the OF first.  Mazara a much better fielder but batting skills are a tad less than Beaty, so worth a gamble to trade a #11 draft pick who is already 23 and just played in rookie ball.  The fact that LA traded him within the division to the Padres indicates to me that they don't expect Beaty to be much of a factor over the course of a season.

Could Pomeranz' IL for 60 days be retroactive to the start of spring training? If possible, that seems the way to go if he is actually ready in late April  vice late May.  Garcia reportedly injured - I've not been impressed by him as I have other RP brought into camp.  I'd put him on the 60 and then release him later in the year when we are able to do it.  Don't think he has much left.

Nope. Any player who is placed on the 60 day IL in ST must remain on the IL for the first 60 days of the regular season … so Pomeranz is out until June 6th (at best).

I guess this opens the door for Weathers to stay on the active roster in the pen … Hill is the only LHRP set. Kerr is on the 40 man but has not overwhelmed in his appearances. Don’t see them keeping Gore in the pen. After that, a bunch of marginal non-roster arms all requiring an offsetting roster move.
