To me, without Mazara, toss up between Alfaro or Beaty on who would go to the OF first. Mazara a much better fielder but batting skills are a tad less than Beaty, so worth a gamble to trade a #11 draft pick who is already 23 and just played in rookie ball. The fact that LA traded him within the division to the Padres indicates to me that they don't expect Beaty to be much of a factor over the course of a season.
Melvin (and actually Alfaro) has made it clear that Alfaro is a catcher … full stop. Emergency sure but as part of a plan … apparently not.
So .. as of now … Beaty is the back-up OF (and back-up 1B/DH) … Mazara is in trouble being only a corner OF/DH and arguable less a hitter than Beaty (right now). He may be sitting in AAA for a call-up to start the season (don’t know if he has a out if not making the ML roster). Hard to see to similar profiles in Beaty and Mazara making the team.
For me, assuming 3 catchers and Rosario being sent down … still a need for a legit back-up INF with some ML experience for those short fills as needed. Basically buys time until Tatis is back or Abrams proves in AAA he is ready.

Beaty looks like an offensive upgrade over Profar against RHP. .267/.339/.440 for his career. .261/.359/.391 last year. You would like to see a bit more power, but that's plenty useful. His numbers against lefties aren't great, but he only has 63 PAs against lefties in the big leagues and has been kind of up and down against them in the minors. He also gives us some coverage if they find a Hosmer trade at some point. With an option left in his last Pre-Arb year it's a solid pickup.

FanGraphs has Rosario and Kerr being sent down to the minors. Not shocking. Kerr has options (as does Rosario) and Rosario was not a slam dunk to earn a spot on the roster as the back-up. Showed well at times and could be an emergency piece, if needed. Kerr was inconsistent but showed flashes of dominance. For sure, he'll be on the El Paso-San Diego shuttle several times in 2022.
When we look at RP reinforcements from the lefty side, looks like Kerr (3 options) may be the first one back since already on the 40 man. I like what I've seen of Krol, but no options remaining so once he's up he performs or we possibly lose him. Not sure why we haven't seen Castillo and I believe Weathers will be stretched out to be a SP. Only other options left may be Bergen (2 options), Camarena (1) and Westphal. If he start 2022 with Hill and keep Kerr closeby if needed, then get Pomeranz in May we should be okay. I'd like to believe Castillo and Krol are ready but both need a roster spot. Likely Crismatt or a RP will be traded by the time 6-8 weeks of the season shakes out.

So apparently the reason the Conforto market has been so quiet (non existent) is he hurt his shoulder diving for a ball during a workout in January and put his workouts on hold until 100%.
Didn't appear a major injury...so maybe news will start trickling in soon.
I wonder if our lack of adding an outfielder has anything to do with us still having an interest in him?

According to Nightengale, SD and PIT have recently discussed a trade for Reynolds. He says that nothing is eminent at this time, but they are still having discussions. One of the main pieces being discussed at the moment is either Paddack or Weathers. Of course there would need to be other pieces from SD going to PIT.
They cite that Weathers might be the more desirable piece since he has longer control over Paddack, and did not finish the season with an elbow injury.
Losing Weathers would hurt IMO, however we dont have a piece in the MiL like Reynolds that is close. Maybe they can get it done.

I wonder how much of this revelation is cover by Scott Boras for the lack of interest? Hard to believe that this was not known and reported up until now (if indeed real). Even if we discount the pre-agreement period ... it has been weeks post-agreement for this story to surface yet no reporter was on it.
Teams have to consider Conforto's injury plagued 2021 (and lesser than historical performance) then layer in a January new injury ... against Boras' hype of him being fully ready and whatever their contract demand. This late in the spring ... coupled with that history ... going to be a hard sell considering he is also encumbered with the QO.
Not sure many (if any) teams will go long term at a $15-20MM AAV given the uncertainty of health. On the other hand, going one year at $20MM and losing the second draft pick probably does not fit many teams at this late date. From the Padres perspective ... more cost from penalties from exceeding the luxury tax.
It sure looks as though Conforto / Boras made an error by not taking the QO ... taking the $18.5MM, prove health and productivity, and hit FA (without a QO) next winter. However, this is Boras and is guys usually come out OK in the end.

I would be OK including Weathers but the key is if PITT demands Abrams and some other prospects (and who they are). Would try to use Campusano instead of Abrams but that may make the 3rd and 4th piece going to PITT even better prospects ... and better prospects in PITT's mind.
At the risk of heresy ... considering Reynolds in a top tier LF (all-star, 4 years control, league minimum) and the Padres are set for years in the middle INF with Tatis / Cronenworth) ... using Abrams (unproven in ML with 6 years control) in a deal might make sense if his "future" is in the OF (if he hits in the ML). Using Abrams (maybe with Weathers) should significantly lower the quality of the 3rd/4th pieces in a deal.
If winning in the next two years is important ... better chance with Reynolds in LF than with Abrams / Weathers playing somewhere.
