Saw a blurb on MLBTR were SD has expressed interest in Contreras, who is in his last season with the Cubs. Brings up many questions....

Preller realizes that we dont need 5 catchers on a 26 man roster, right?

IF they do have interest, could the follow up be these moves be possible.

Contreras becomes #1 Catcher, Alfaro becomes back up, and Campusano gets his chance for 2023. Then Nola and Caratini become trade foder for an additional move for our desperately needed OFer?

Or maybe this is the long awaited deal to move Hosmer’s contract? Something like Hosmer / Campusano for Contreras (some others tossed in for flavor). Cubs are not in great shape at 1B/DH while both trying to make the playoffs and build for the future … money should not be their issue. If no money is exchanged … Padres “save about $11MM.

That $11MM coupled with the under tax threshold level could let them sign Conforto for LF. Then the new opening at 1B could be covered by the 3 catchers (one would still be traded) … keeps Nola’s bat in the line-up and could keep him fresher. Maybe the catcher moved (maybe with an excess RP) can yield a 1B/DH type. Thinking something like Davis or Smith from the METS … both now relegated to the bench (along with McNeil) with the other METS moves. Given we are talking a 1B/DH type should be easier to fill than an OF slot.

Probably not but maybe?

I’ve already seen enough from Kim in these few ST games to see he has not improved his swing.

Maybe we can survive until Tatis is back with his glove and a .220 avg.?

His uppercut is the same…as are the swings under the elevated fastball resulting in swing and miss or pop ups.

Expect we will have to go that route with Kim. Plus defense and a .220 average can work if the other bats deliver. If the other bats don’t deliver … maybe a bigger problem than just the shortstop.

Almost have to give Kim a decent run to start the season but if he does not cut it … could see Cronenworth the SS and Profar to 2B as an interim fix. IF Abrams starts at SS in AAA and is lights out in April he might be the option … just would not plan that way … he still has to prove his readiness over an extended run at an upper level.

I was thinking that this could be a way to move Hosmer as well. I did see a blurb that NYM is not really interested in not trading Davis, Smith, or McNeil, but that could just be media fodder by NYM to generate more interest? People want what they cant have......

Pillar to Dodgers in minor league deal. I'm surprised we didn't do this.

Was just thinking this as well when I saw that.

Kevin Acee s assessment of our LF situation was fairly dour this morning.

Pham's asking price is apparently wholly unrealistic and the Rays price for Meadows is understandably high as well. The club's plans did indeed seem to hinge on winning Suzuki with a lower bid and/or unloading Hosmer. Rolling into opening day with Profar as our starting LF, however, is absolutely unacceptable. They've put themselves in this position and they need to figure out how to solve it.

Barring a trade, or SD being OK with going over the luxury tax, they are going to have to put Mazara on the 40 man, and he is probably going to be our starting LFer.

But Acee and we here are correct, a starting OF of Mazara, Grisham, and Myers with Profar as the only back up (especially in CF), is not very confidence inspiring.

Dont understand not signing to a MiL deal a Jankowski, Pillar, Marisnick, Hamilton, DeShields Jr., someone that can at least hold down CF defense for 7-10 days if/when Grisham gets hurt.

It does feel like we would have benefited from another body or two in the OF, although the Padres probably see the likes of Trayce Thompson as sufficient enough to plug CF on a short term basis like that.

Either way this is trending into pretty scary territory. A team with the payroll and aspirations of the Padres should be absolutely embarrassed at the prospect of utilizing Mazara and Profar as significant portions of a starting outfield. They've got to solve this somehow.

With the arbitration filing deadline coming up here shortly we should gain some clarity where things stand salary wise both for the Padres and teams around the league. Maybe that will act as a catalyst for the trade market as teams will know precisely how much they will be taking on for players that settle and the maximum potential for players that don't. Financial certainty could be key for AJ since it seems clear we are trying to stay under the 230m threshold.

I also wonder if any potential moves are being held up by the situation in Oakland. I wonder if their are any teams that might pivot to targeting Paddock or Weathers if they miss out on Months or Manaea.

The OF is an issue and Preller will have to pull a rabbit out of his hat to fix this by ST.

As it is, Mazara / Profar will share LF. Then expect that non-roster Thompson (some ML experience) and Azocar are the “emergency” adds if they need a CF. Both can field at least.

The “over the hill gang” signing MiL contracts probably are signing deals with Jun 1 opt outs and if added a greater than minimum deal … probably more than the Padres want for a back-up that may not be much better at this stage than Thompson / Azocar.

Also, if they had other options they may not have wanted to sign with the Padres.

Wouldn’t worry too much about that level of insurance (probably can pick one up mid-season if needed) … focus still needs to be on a starter.
