Quote from MrPadre19 on March 15, 2022, 7:57 amSo if Campy has a good ST and we don't sign a dedicated DH....What about trading Nola and using Caratini/Campy at Catcher and DH Campy on his days off?
Don't think we would get much for Caratini plus Yu wants him to stay I'm sure.
I really want our DH to mainly be the DH instead of rotating guys every day.It's fine to do that every once in a while...give Manny and a couple others a day off in the field every once in awhile.
All I know is I sure wish we had more info on what kinds of deals/signings we are actually close on...besides Suzuki which we obviously know about.

Wonder who is doing the puffing trying to push up the LAD price? Agent or opponents?
Since the Olson trade … TOR, BOST, and TB names have been linked to Freeman and a renewed speculation on NYY.
It sounds as though the key element is going 6 years (and the AAV). What may turn the tide away for LAD is an “overpay” by one of the 4 AL East contenders … all are very good teams with eyes on the prize and are in head to head competition. TOR has the payroll space (and a young team) and maybe the favorite … so adding Freeman could take them to the next level.
On the flip side, LAD are currently (I think) into the second tier of penalties and signing Freeman would put them into the third tier (maybe the 4th) plus still some consideration by them of re-signing Jansen. They may have a ton of money but they did not get there by fiscally irresponsible while they are NOW currently favored for the World Series. Wild Card is the future of Bauer (and his contract) … and that is not resolving quickly.
Personally routing for TOR keeping Freeman away for the traditional BIG guys of the LAD - NYY - BOST. Want to see some of their young star in the playoffs.

Quote from fenn68 on March 15, 2022, 8:14 amNot sure any of the veteran catchers will yield a big return … Campusano probably has the best trade value … just not sure he is ML ready as a hitter or defensively without at least a half season in AAA.
Now did hear that Melvin prefers plus defensive catchers over offense which should lead them in order: Nola - Alfaro - Caratini - Campusano to start 2022 no matter the ST performance.
I do worry about Nola’s ability to catch more than 100 games and stay healthy … plus at about age 32 should be on the decline. So maybe a question of when Nola get traded. Caratini and Alfaro are back-ups at best (and only 2 control years) … so continuing Campusano development for half a season as a catcher may be the best for setting up the future.
MLB has some really poor back-up catchers around the league … and some really poor starting catchers (see NYY). So, Caratini would have appeal to some for a minor league prospect. Alfaro probably not.

Quote from fenn68 on March 15, 2022, 8:24 amAs it stands with Cruz going to WASH, Tatis out for at least 3 months, and potentially Suzuki not signing the offense is in trouble that may in a state that can’t be offset with any reasonable adds. Consider:
OF: Mazara (likely); Grisham; Myers;
INF: Machado; Kim; Cronenworth; Hosmer;
Catcher: Nola
DH / Bench: Profar; Caratini; Alfaro; Campusano; Rosario
That makes 13 with Mazara added to replace Tatis … that is it for position players on the 40 man and little to nothing ML ready in AAA (don’t think Abrams is).
Not sure that adding one elite hitter changes the problem all that much … especially if still doubt Hosmer / Myers. So everything falls on the pitching … IF in ST the Padres see injuries that take out a couple of key starters / relievers … do the Padres start to reset the roster with a 2023 focus?

Good deal for Olson … great deal for ATL.
Olson will turn 28 this month and an 8 year deal gets him to 35 for what seems to be a real bargain $21MM AAV.
Freeman at about 32 wants a 6 year deal that takes him to age 38 and most guesses were around a $30MM AAV.
Good chance Olson provides more productive years than Freeman would have at about 2/3rds the cost.
