Quote from fenn68 on March 15, 2022, 11:00 amA comment from Melvin … the first four SP are set in stone: Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, and Clevinger. The 5th slot is up for grabs.
That does bring us back to what is going on with Nick Martinez?

Quote from fenn68 on March 15, 2022, 11:03 amPer Dennis Lin a “teasing” comment from Peter Siedler …. Preller has a lot of options he is working on … but it takes two to tango … and sometime three.
We know Preller likes his three team deals … so maybe something more convoluted that we have been considering.

Wow if true!
Says something that they are actually thinking about another superstar and the contract that goes with it.
Or,are they just messing with the Dodgers?
I really don't think that would be the case but this is yuge if ttrue!

Probably someone (agent?) is using Nightengale to pump the price … now that ATL is out suddenly 4-5 teams are interested?
Having said that … not out of the question considering the Padre moves out of character to sign Hosmer and Machado plus the massive early extension of Tatis.
If the AAV sits at $30MM, Padres could handle it going forward as other big contracts begin to fall off (eg Myers and the SP).
IF (as most suspect) Preller is deep into other deals that may move Hosmer (or Myers) to clear more payroll and they do need some big bats … maybe.

Quote from fenn68 on March 15, 2022, 12:37 pmHeard a report that Nick Martinez is fielding offers from other teams after the lockout ended … guess why he has not been signed by the Padres.
Given that Weathers, Paddack, and Gore are legit candidates for that 5th SP slot … and Martinez is no slam dunk (one good season in Japan at 30-31) … Padres may be OK with not signing him. Plus they may want out of the commitment which is $7MM in 2022 and opt outs for the next two years of $4-5MM years … AAV of $5MM. Also, maybe a little more confident that Clevinger is ready to roll on opening day.
Not signing Martinez opens up more payroll space for adding bats.

Quote from fenn68 on March 15, 2022, 9:36 pmWell NYY sign Rizzo … 2 years at $16MM per year with an opt out after one. Takes them out of the Freeman quest even as a long shot and shoot may plan to move Hosmer and a catcher to NY. That is about the right AAV but a year less than many guessed.
With ATL and NYY out of the hunt for a LHH 1B, finding it hard to place Hosmer other than in SD.

Quote from fenn68 on March 16, 2022, 5:17 amEvery action has a reaction. With Rizzo in the fold for 1B and Stanton the nominal DH … will the NYY push harder to trade Luke Voit? Oft injured, poor defense but can hit … a decent RHH DH option. Assuming the Padres miss out on “bigger” trades / FA signings could (should) they be players for Voit? Voit (3 years of control) is in arbitration 1 with and estimated $5.4MM decision … Padres can handle that.
NYY need a catcher … Padres have catchers … Padres need a bat / DH … seems too logical of a match.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 16, 2022, 5:23 amToronto finalizing a trade for Matt Chapman.
This will keep Guerrero at 1b which puts them out of the Freeman sweepstakes.
Which basically gives Freeman to the Dodgers.(come on Red Sox!)
He prefers SoCal so unless the Angels waken from their slumber this is bad news.
We gotta get some moves going...we can't compete with the Dodgers or the Giants as is unless we have a season like SF did last years where everyone has a career year at the same time.
This is our Padres.....that scenario is highly doubtful.

Now what?
Maybe this will at least get the moves rolling now?
About $3M per year more than MLBTR was predicting, so maybe a bit of an overpay to have him chose Chicago over SD???
There is still Bryant, Schwarber, Castellanos out there.
But we do need one more very good hitting OFer, especially with Tatis out for 3 months.
