Quote from fenn68 on January 30, 2022, 3:01 pmGrisham will be an interesting watch …2021 he had a outstanding 1st half … injured … horrible 2nd half. No idea the effect of the the injury.
Keep in mind that the CF position in the ML has little depth (actually an issue for a few years if looking for both defense and offense). Last season there were only 13 “qualified” CF and in that group Grisham was 9th with a 2.1 WAR even with that bad 2nd half. Not an All-Star level player, but good given the alternatives.
See most of the projections have him in the 2.5-3.5 WAR range … put projections are just that … if he repeats his 2nd half that is bad but if he repeats his first half that is good.
At least for now … given the lack of better CF options available in the league … will take the wait and see approach.

Quote from LynchMob on January 30, 2022, 7:00 pmThis seems HUGE ...
"Joining the Padres in 2022 as a player development consultant is Mike Shildt, who spent the last four seasons as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals." https://twitter.com/Padres/status/1486444422870933504

Quote from BoosterSD on January 31, 2022, 8:25 amSaw a couple of blurbs on MLBTR over the weekend. One where SD offered Paddack as part of a Scherzer/Turner package to WAS. Then another this morning regarding Victor Robles. Where this is possibly a make or break year for him. I wonder if this is a good "change of scenery" trade for both teams.
WAS, not looking like they are going to compete this season. And SD, looking to make it all the way. With SD debatably having extra pitching, and WAS looking to build towards the future, a Paddack for Robles trade could make sense for both teams. Might have to be a couple of extra moving parts in both directions to make the end game work, but should help SD in the OF and WAS on the mound.

Quote from BoosterSD on February 1, 2022, 7:50 amI keep forgetting that Conforto is still out there as a FA. While he comes with injury risk, if healthy he represents a nice piece for the SD outfield. Decent BA, very good OBP numbers, and a career OPS of .824 all while playing his home games at Citifield which I think plays similar to Petco. Plus he is capable of playing all 3 of spots and a LH bat.
MLBTR was predicting a year $20M contract.

Quote from Randy Manese on February 1, 2022, 11:23 amI've like Conforto as a trade acquisition for years but seems like the loss of draft choice, international bonus money, besides a minimum per year salary of 20 Million may make him an unrealistic sign. Even if the luxury tax is raised in the new CBA and there may be some additional money made available to spend, the first two considerations would not make him reasonable when the Padres are trying to rebuild their farm system.
I'm thinking we add one more bat for around $10-12 million and see what we can do to trade off some veteran relief pitching/lower level prospects to find a possible closer prospect to support Pierce Johnson, Pomeranz, Lamet, Suarez or whoever will be thrown into that role; that acquisition is probably going to cost some money. Rosenthal and Hand are still out there as former closers but their best days are likely behind them even if they weren't injury risks. Besides, somewhere along the way they have to come up with money for Musgrove and/or Clevinger for 2023 and beyond.
This is the year we have to hope that we see growth in Grisham and a return to health for the rest of the team to reach the production levels expected of them. I believe the new coaching staff will elevate this team to be as competitive as it has ever been and so I optimistically predict we'll be in the thick of things provided we only have an average amount of injuries that don't take out our key players for extensive periods of time. It's a big IF but that's what a new season always brings - hope!

Quote from BoosterSD on February 1, 2022, 11:41 amForgot about the fact that he declined a Qualifying Offer. That is why I had originally crossed him off my list as well.
I just keep searching for that LHH Ofer with some power. I think the team is fairly balanced when it comes to pitching and defense, just lacking behind the RHH power that SD when it comes to lefty bats.
I know we are trying to rebuild the farm while being at the highest level of competition, but I will keep tooting my horn for Olson from OAK.
Olson and Cruz, and live with Profar in LF, and Hosmer as a part time DH, and then hope he opts out after 2022.

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 1, 2022, 3:48 pmIf all else fails I wouldn’t mind seeing a low cost signing like Corey Dickerson.
Maybe even a minor league deal for the other Dickerson…….Alex.
Both health risk guys though.

If the Padres get lucky and their new pitching coach is as good as billed … might we see Austin Adams emerge as the new dominant closer for the Padres?
His stuff is elite … however, his control is abysmal. Adams has been around for a while and a number of teams could not get him straighten out … but there is a chance.
Even if not the closer … enough stuff to hold an effective (m0st of the time) RP role.

Quote from fenn68 on February 7, 2022, 2:40 pmDid notice MLB dictated that minor league camps shall open as scheduled (neither earlier or later as some suggested) to minimize some potential advantages that could be had (based on player mix) with early openings.
Also, non-roster players with previous ML experience (not now part of the UNION) will be permitted to skip camp without penalty if they want to demonstrate solidarity with the MLBPA. Doubt many will opt out consider this is their career and their futures in the ML is at best tenuous given the have been dropped from 40 man rosters before. If anything a fringe player may rush to minor league camp in an effort to get in shape and noticed before the ML players arrive increasing his chance of being added to the roster.
Padres … as most teams … have a lot of his type but likely only Mazara has the legit shot for the 26 man out of ST. Maybe a long shot with Ona. Both are OF/DH types and that is a need.
