Off Season Moves and discussion

PreviousPage 28 of 100Next

No idea on what Kyle Seager is trying to land but if his market does not materialize he could be an interesting long shot signing. Yes a 3B but expect he could handle DH and 1B if needed. LHH who clubbed 34 HR / 101 RBI last season with Seattle.

Coming off a big contract but 34 … and his overall OPS not great … so not going to be a mega deal. Maybe $12MM AAV/2 year deal. Not saddled with a qualifying offer.

What is appealing is his splits home and away:

In Seattle: 159/245/329 … very bad

On the Road; 261/323/538 ,,, very good

So if you don’t want a long term commitment and buy into his AWAY stats in 2021 … MIGHT turn out better than the alternatives.

All of this(price tag ang qualifying offer attached) has to make you wonder if the rumors we are interested in Castellanos are true.

If so,then they aren't very worried about the luxury tax thresh hold.

Unless they are negotiating with him contingent on other cost saving moves occurring.

One good thing is they now have plenty of time to think about what they are trying to do.

I've always found it hard to believe that when the rules say you can't have any contact that everyone is 100% following said rule.

Am I the only one that doesn't think Boras and other agents aren't some how still negotiating?

That's a tough one.

On one hand I'd prefer Castellanos but all those years is risky business and he put up a majority of his numbers in a bandbox.

I've never been a Schwarber fan but it's hard to ague with his production the last couple years.

Then again he hit like 9 home runs in 2 weeks....if it takes a streak like that to put up those numbers it may not be reproduceable?

Lastly...it's not my money. So gotta trust AJ and Ownership to do what they feel is best.

If we were to get one of them I'd be fine either way I guess.

How's that for committing to an answer?

Way to waffle Mr. P!! 🙂

I love Waffles!

Matter of fact I may just hit The Waffle House tonight!

Heard second handed all those Castellanos (and Bryant) rumors have zero basis in the Padres front office.

According to Jonathan Mayo's article on MLB.com website, anyone eligible for the major league Rule 5 draft is essentially eligible for the minor league Rule 5 phase.  He mentions that those not on the 38 man protected AAA roster may draft until they have filled the 38 slots.  The El Paso roster currently shows 24 players on the roster but may have not been updated.

This raises a couple of questions:  1) was their a time to add to/freeze the AAA roster (certainly before 12/09) and 2) if they missed out moving up guys like Valenzuela, Ornelas, Sabrowski, etc. before the roster was frozen at 24? could they draft their own players, among others, until they reach that 38 man AAA roster number provided other teams haven't drafted them.

If there are opportunities to grab a few players who were close to going onto the 40-man as well as add guys like Hunt, Cantillo and Omar Cruz, the Padres may be very active during this minor league phase.  December 9 could turn out to be a VERY INTERESTING day for the Padres minor league teams system-wide.

If I misunderstood that article or if anyone has any more information on who is now on the El Paso roster, would be great to know that going into the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.

Guessing all teams have already submitted their AAA rosters for the purpose of the rule 5 but may just not release that for mass consumption. More of a procedural exercise.

As I recall … yes, all Rule 5 eligible are available in the minor league phase UNLESS they are added to the AAA roster beforehand. The AAA phase can take anyone eligible from the AA rosters or lower (at a fixed price … very low). In theory there is also a AA phase that can select from A ball or lower (at even a lower prices) … at that point not really much available unless some team just wants to move on from a player.

I could see the Padres selecting some players in the AAA phase off AA rosters … more to fill out AAA/AA rosters next season … may need some bodies for INF/OF filler.

As for the Padres losing players … probably … but if they move 5-10 of the “better” Rule 5 eligible to the AAA roster (only can be selected in the ML phase) … not much to worry about if the others are selected. Really rare for a player selected in the minor league phase ending up a ML player (other than a cup of coffee).

Are the delaying the Rule 5 since they are delaying / cancelled the Winter Meetings?

Padres lost 4 pitchers in the Rule 5 draft and picked up 1.  Of those taken, Sabrowski and Arias probably had the most upside, but Guarate and Kuzia flashed skills on occasion.  Gavin, from the Royals, was who the Padres got and put on the El Paso roster.  I'm guessing some of the other players we thought might get drafted moved to the 40 man and can still be selected in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft.

IF there is a Rule 5 ML phase ... some talk of phasing that out as part of some other player control issues in the new CBA being negotiated.

Think the Padres lost 5: Sabrowski (who looked really good when healthy but has never been healthy); Boushley; Kuzia; Guarte (top 30 in 2020 at #20); and Arias.

The RP they added is 26 and was in AAA last season ... so KC must have dropped him to AA to protect others and have room for other selections. Nice K% and low H/IP ratios so must have a shot ... but if KC exposed him to the MiL phase ... a long shot.

Bit surprised they did not pick up a AAA/AA filler INF or OF ... they are pretty thin there and need bodies. Maybe they see enough floating around in FA to fill those holes.

It was indeed 5 pitchers lost.  Boushley and Kuzia both finished the minor league season with El Paso but apparently were sent back down to San Antonio, where they spent most of 2021, thus making them eligible to be drafted.   Not many position players drafted overall in this minor league phase so expect a plethora of minor league free agents to be signed to fortify the upper two minor league levels for San Diego, however, it was reported that these free agents can't be signed with the expressed invitation/commitment to be brought to spring training.

Is everyone already bored with the CBA "negotiations"?  We all know that whatever they agree to, it is us, the fans, that are going to have to carry the freight by paying more for tickets, team memorabilia, parking, concessions, etc.
