Quote from fenn68 on December 2, 2021, 3:43 amMLB now in lockout … no transactions … Winter Meetings cancelled … so, going to be a quiet winter as all teams will likely go into some form of silence (should be easy for the Padres).
MLBTR is states that injured players will NOT be able to use team facilities or consult with team medical staff … wonder if that had any factor in the non-tenders of Strahm, Castillo, and Wingenter … all recovering from injury.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 2, 2021, 5:46 amQuote from fenn68 on December 2, 2021, 3:22 amTalk about an unexpected signing in Martinez … don’t recall hearing anything about him in any context ever. Doesn’t mean he will not be useful as a bottom of the rotation SP.
$20MM / 4 years ($5MM AAV) … $5MM AAV seems OK but the 4 years is a bit of a surprise (and he has an opt out after two). Will have to sit back and rely on the Padre scouts on this one (along with the other signing for Japan … Suarez).
Now the Padres have a ton of bodies going to ST for the 13 rotation slots and way more than 13 cannot be optioned to the minors … so, at some point, we should see a lot of DFA/trades/IL moves.
Makes me wonder what the Padres think of the health of Paddack, Lamet, and Pomeranz and the ML readiness as a SP of Weathers or Gore.
I think Weathers will be fine. I think the amount of innings got to him last season. In the beginning part of the season he was really good. Then he hit about 100 innings and started to falter. I expect that we will see him give SD ML team about 150 innings this season around the performance of the first 80-95 innings of last season. With the other injuries last season, could not rest him the way they probably wanted to last season.

With Strahm, Wingenter, and Castillo no longer being employed by the ball club, does that mean they COULD possibly use our facilities still? Interesting point really.
If they are no longer under major leaugue contracts, they are no longer govererned by MLB....just as none of us are? And if Mr. Fowler or Siedler said it was okay, WE could use the facility, right?

Yeh, that is a technicality that still a bit unclear with those guys.
Depending how this is interpreted … since they were on the ML roster in 2021 (albeit injured) are they still linked to the lockout rules or is the interpretation restricted to the current 40 man roster players? Are they still members of the MLBPA even if a FA but still getting union benefits (think pensions). Doubt the union kicks them out just because not on the 40 man.
Get out the lawyers.
Side we see the Padres website and MLB Network, for example, not being able to talk with, show images of MLBPA players … a legal issue since those are tied to the MLB-MLBPA contract. I expect the commentary on players will be kept within some legal constraints … part specific contract limits part not wanting to “disrupt” negotiations.

Quote from fenn68 on December 2, 2021, 6:36 amIt “appears” that the Martinez signing (just as the current report on Verlander) is in limbo since apparently not signed and approved by MLB before the lockout.
So, technically a FA and will not be on the 40 man until MLB approves the deal post-freeze. Saves someone from getting DFA right now. Not sure the legal aspects of non-approved signed contract. Likely a formality to get it done BUT is there a window here with either side able to back out?
Note: Martinez will get $7MM in 2022 and $13MM over the last three years unless he opts out (he got that option).

Quote from fenn68 on December 2, 2021, 8:44 amReds sign Trey Wingenter and Alan Cordoba to minor league contracts with invitations to ML ST camp.
I guess that answers the question on "former" ML players being treated as minor league players.

According to MLBTR they were signed last night prior to the lockout. So it sounds like they are considered as part of the MLBPA at this time.

Good catch ... so back to the open question of how similar players are handed during the freeze.
Personally sad the Padres did not sign Cordoba back ... good story on a player who still has potential in my mind. I would have tried to convince him a move the the OF would get him an earlier shot for the ML with the Padres. Padres were basically using him in the INF ... not a great future with the Padres. So, his agent probably saw a greater future with the Reds.

Quote from fenn68 on December 2, 2021, 9:14 amSaw they are "postponing" the ML phase of the Rule 5 but will go ahead with the minor league phase.
Padres will probably do some paperwork shuffling of minor league players eligible for Rule 5 to get them on the AAA roster to shield them for the minor league Rule 5. At least the ones they want to protect while leaving some AAA spots to select some prospects from other organizations. Players will get repositioned when the season starts.
Padres need to add some journeyman minor league bodies for AAA/AA just to fill out the roster ... claiming price is cheap (and final). Probably want to have a core base in place then work on adding from the minor league FA pool ... create some excess, to protect for the unknown.
Over the next 3 months ... this may be the highlight of the winter.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 2, 2021, 4:03 pmNot sure how the Rule 5 minor league phase works. From what you said, if, for example, they put Valenzuela, Ornelas, E Ruiz and A Ruiz on the AAA roster they will all be protected from Rule 5? Appreciate educating me on this.
