Off Season Moves and discussion

Also also, $6m annual salary for Melancon is another imminently affordable contract. All signs are pointing towards disappointment and unfulfilled promises this offseason.

Glancing through the remaining SP options, nothing feels terribly compelling. It feels as though we'll be waiting for the market to settle before nabbing up dregs w/ upside like Bundy or Danny Duffy, or retreads like Cueto or Davies. Pineda is available and a guy who we've inquired about in the past and I believe JA Happ is floating around. Kikuchi, Rodon, Stroman and Grienke are all likely out of play. It truly feels like we missed the sweet spot.

As far as offensive help goes, there's plenty more out there. But even then, I have no idea why we didn't gamble on a guy like Clint Frazier for $1.5m. It feels as though the club is waiting for the universal DH picture to resolve before making a move here, but if the pitching search is indication then we shouldn't be expecting even a moderate splash here, either.

As far as the MiL contracts are concerned, my understanding is that anyone that did not play in the majors in 2021 is eligible to sign after the deadline.

Also, I can't help but feel like we missed an opportunity to flesh out our rotation in significant fashion. Cobb and Gray signed for a combined annual commitment of $23m. That feels extremely reasonable for those two arms. What's more, if we're sitting at $184m, it feels silly and counter productive to suddenly pinch pennies to the point where you exclude make 2-3 mid range additions that could put you over the top. If you can't sign those kinds of guys when you're playing at this level of payroll, you shouldn't be playing at this level at all.

Now word is nothing is imminent on the rotation front, which I assume would be the case regardless of the looming deadline. That, frankly, is unacceptable. I want to say I trust in Preller, but he failed spectacularly at the deadline. I think we all need to see something this offseason after the team utterly betrayed a city's faith and its own talent with such a catastrophic showing last season.

Guessing all the money will be targeted for one (or two) significant bats.

Padres are woefully light hitters to start (especially with a DH) …. Only 13 on the 40 man (and next season 13 will be required for the 26 man) … really not going to like Profar as the every day LF (and no experienced OF back-up)  … Alfaro or Campusano DH … and the remaining bench of Caratini / Kim / Rosario. Sets up 2/9th of the everyday line with either proven lack of starter capability or just no track record. Then if there is an injury … whew could get ugly. Zip near term in the minors to help unless Abrams hits 2022 hot … but can’t rely on that.

Would not surprise me to see Preller going all in on one of Castellanos, Schwarber, or Conforto for the bigger contract or go $10MM+ on one (or two) mid range FA. Padres will end up over $200MM and likely higher than in 2021.

We did, the signing of Bob Melvin. I dont think enough on here are giving this the credit it deserves. IMO, I dont think we falter as much, and make the playoffs last season with Melvin at the healm.

Did I miss where we were given offseason promises?

I think we’ve just grown accustomed to a ton of rumors and many moves over the last few off seasons and a return to “normalcy” seems like a let down.

We really only need one bat,LF/DH, and a back end healthy starter(Davies/Greinke/Hill type).

We shouldn’t be expecting 6-10 moves or disappointment.

Padres finalize the deal with RP Suarez … 1 year (terms unknown).

Going to be a crowd of RP candidates in ST … most are not going AAA candidates … so expect some to be traded / DFA by opening day (baring a spate of injuries).

Roster now at 40 and baring a last minute FA signing of an impact bat … Preller will be busy during the freeze trying to line up a trade for post-freeze or just bide his time for a full on pursuit of one of the final FA hitters.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/12/padres-sign-robert-suarez.html

Suárez has never appeared in the big leagues. The Venezuela native has spent the past five seasons pitching in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, emerging as a shutdown closer the last two years. Between 2020-21, the right-hander saved 67 games for the Hanshin Tigers. He reportedly attracted some big league interest last offseason on the heels of a 2.24 ERA in 2020, but Suárez elected to return to the Nishinomiya-based club for a second season.

The 30-year-old (31 in March) backed up his prior success with another great showing this year. Suárez dominated to the tune of a 1.16 ERA across 62 1/3 frames. His peripherals were equally impressive, as the righty struck out 25.3% of opposing hitters against a minuscule 3.5% walk percentage.

Looks like Padres signed a 31 year old P from Japan at the deadline.  Nick Martinez reportedly signed a 4 year contract but there were no details.  It appears Norwood was removed from the roster.

Correction:  Apparently 4 yr - 20MM deal with Martinez not finalized before CBA lapse so in limbo unless some kind of glitch occurred in the reporting.  No Padre was removed from the current 40 man to accommodate the signing.  Martinez expected to challenge for the 5th starter position and at worst would be a longman in the pen.

Talk about an unexpected signing in Martinez … don’t recall hearing anything about him in any context ever. Doesn’t mean he will not be useful as a bottom of the rotation SP.

$20MM / 4 years ($5MM AAV) … $5MM AAV seems OK but the 4 years is a bit of a surprise (and he has an opt out after two). Will have to sit back and rely on the Padre scouts on this one (along with the other signing for Japan … Suarez).

Now the Padres have a ton of bodies going to ST for the 13 rotation slots and way more than 13 cannot be optioned to the minors … so, at some point, we should see a lot of DFA/trades/IL moves.

Makes me wonder what the Padres think of the health of Paddack, Lamet, and Pomeranz and the ML readiness as a SP of Weathers or Gore.
