Quote from Randy Manese on November 19, 2021, 5:30 pmPadres will be very lucky not to lose Valenzuela, especially since catchers are such a universally needed commodity. Understand that it probably would be hard to retain him on someone's 40-man but if a guy like Torrens can be drafted, then Valenzuela can be drafted by a rebuilding team. I'll be VERY disappointed if they lose him.

Would Kim for Frazier be a good move for SD?
I though about Frazier when I saw that. Considering the NYY DFA’d him … should be able to get him (if they want him) for a non-roster marginal prospect. NYY don’t need another player to clog their 40 man and really don’t need Kim’s contract as a bench player.
Think the guess on his arbitration with be around $2.5MM … so that should not be a major issue for the Padres considering they really need an OF/DH bat. I guess they could gamble on his clearing waivers and sign him to even a lower deal as a FA … Padres should be appealing given the need for a bat.
Frazier has been a bit of a head scratcher for me … was a major prospect when Cleveland dealt him to NYY but had some issues (don’t remember what). In NY has been good then bad then good then bad … plus really poor defense … so maybe a DH projection. Plus I think he ended 2021 injured … vertigo after a series of concussions leading to a difference of opinion between him and NYY.
For a guy that was to be the NYY starting LF at the beginning of 2021 to being DFA … makes be concerned … but would take the look-see but not guarantee much.

Actually it is keeping on the ML 26 man that is hard BUT it is expected that the 26 man will be required to carry 13 position players and if the DH is added to the NL … that 13th man may not be needed all that much if the rest of the 13 are stable.
Never like to see putting an upside catcher at risk …

Hadnt heard about the injuries. I do think a couple of issues with C Frazier were all the ups and downs from the MiL to the ML. Might have had a hard time getting a rhythm going. NY is not the easiest place to have different performance levels either. Plus being compared to Judge and Stanton can not be easy. Maybe a change of scenery does him well.

Quote from Randy Manese on November 19, 2021, 11:39 pmAppears to me there is still enough chaff on the roster to either add FA's before the potential Dec 1 CBA lapse or non-tender a few of the arbitration eligibles to open up a couple of roster spots for potential Rule 5 picks and/or trades. With only 13 position players on the roster, the majority of these adds should be on the position player side. My guess is Norwood, Guerra, Strahm or Wingenter would be the next in line to move off the 40-man to make room for some OF/DH bats. The next week and a half should be very interesting!

Quote from Randy Manese on November 19, 2021, 11:54 pmLooks like former Padre farmhands Joey Cantillo and Omar Cruz were made available for the Rule 5. Cantillo was hurt most of the time since he was traded and apparently Cruz has not developed his secondary offerings sufficiently so both are not likely to find a different home in 2022.

Did Pittsburgh protect Jack Suwinski? Another Preller option for LF?

Quote from fenn68 on November 20, 2021, 3:23 amDoubt the Padres are active in Rule 5 with a full roster and expectations to contend. Remember it is keeping the player on the ML 26 man that is at issue … a pitcher would be really tough as the limit is 13 and expected few have minor league options so adding another arm without options and probably not productive will not help in 2022. Hitters of immediate value are just rare via Rule 5.
Agree there are players on the 40 man that are “easy” to drop … but would expect those moves to follow FA signings or trades. Currently 13 position players and 27 pitchers … not a mix that will get a team through a ML season.
I know we always think of the top players to add but with current roster at 13 position players we should keep an eye out for high quality “marginal” players for the bench (thinking OF/DH) who may sign late as non-roster ST invites. Their agents will study rosters and SD being a contender with a need (potential call-up later) for OF/DH should be a preferred landing spot. At the end of ST .. good chance roster spots will open from DFA players out of options that don’t make the 26 (Guerra, Norwood) or someone going on the 60 day IL to start the season (Morejon, Baez, Castillo and there surgeries around March/April so may early season candidates).

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 20, 2021, 5:39 pmI’d like to have Cantillo “and” Cruz back.
We really don’t have that many arms left in the system.
On Frazier, I’d be surprised if someone like the Orioles or another needy team doesn’t take him off waivers.
