Off Season Moves and discussion

Nothing wrong with a .300 hitter hitting 8th and playing 2b.

However....we have several who can play 2b and need LF/DH and arms.

Frazier may be a luxury we can't afford to improve where we need too.

I'm fine with keeping him....but not if it means we can't sign a guy like Soler or a SP we can count on for 200 innings.

Speaking of....I would have no problem with Zach Davies as our #5.He's serviceable, possibly affordable and seems like he could pitch every 5th day for 10 more years without injury concerns.

Big fan of Davies while he was here. Be happy to have him back.

Since Padres need multiple adds of position players … what about Byron Buxton from MINN? Twins seem willing to move him (for ML level/ready pitching).

Now, Buxton is and ELITE defensive CF and over the past three years showed he can hit. Only 1 year control and salary was only about $5MM in 2021.

However, there is a downside … he has not been able to stay healthy for a full season since 2017 that diminishes his value.

A Buxton to CF … Grisham to LF would be an upgrade (potentially). Given his injuries … would be an upside gamble but it it paid off … All Star talent for 1 year.

What pitching (think it needs to be a SP) would the Padres offer (and MINN take) to make this happen?

What about Austin Meadows from TB?

Lefthanded with power and IMO hasn’t reached his potential.

Preller has history with TB already…..they trade veterans getting more expensive for prospects every year.

He’s only at $4 mil for 22 and Arb the next two seasons.

May cost a lot in prospects but 3 years of Meadows in LF?

Sign me up!

Given the Padre history (and really other teams) of finding a closer / end of game RP options who had minimal fanfare going into ST … could the Padres take that same strategy to allow for deployment of payroll for OF/DH?

Promeranz (if healthy) should be the leading candidate to close

Adams (if the new pitching coach can harness his control) has the raw stuff

Lamet (if healthy and not starting) has the potential

==== from the minors:

Castillo (if healthy from TJ) has the velocity to step up

Wilson … under the radar but Padres seem to like his potential

Kopps … something special in college and low minors in 1st year but have to see if his stuff plays at the ML level.

Closers / end of game RP are a different breed … don’t really need a full arsenal of pitches and can come out of nowhere to be very effective … conversely can implode just as quickly. Hopefully the Padre pitching coach has the magic touch.

Continuing random thoughts,

Jose Azocar had a very good season in the minors with defense being his calling card in CF/RF. Strong arm. Not likely to be a ML quality bat BUT since the Padres are needing multiple OF adds (one probably being the 13th position player) … could Azocar fill that role as a defensive option? Pinch runner? RHH.

At league minimum frees money for an impact OF/DH bat and buys time until Abrams / Hassell become ML ready.

Only 25 and apparently NOT a minor league FA (on the EP roster) … not likely to be selected in Rule 5 so could be a NRI to ST as insurance for the bench role.

Side note … apparently Allan Cordoba (one of my favorite MiL players) is now a FA. Had hopes for him … wonder if the Padres resign him over the winter.

Also, Rivas who was DFA off the ML roster apparently has resigned with the Padres and is now again on the EP roster … good insurance policy in AAA if needed especially if Campusano or Caratini are traded.

We may need to alter are “valuation” of pitchers either as FA or via trade (buying or selling) given the three FA signings this week … consider:

LAA signs Syndergaard for $21MM / 1 year … did not pitch in 2020 and only 2 innings in 2021 ,,, big gamble that he can be the old Syndergaard at his peak.

Detroit signs Eduardo Rodriguez for $77MM / 5 years … lofty 4.74 ERA in 2021 and a career 4.16 ERA plus the complication he did not pitch in 2020 due to a heart condition (inflammation). Then added a opt out after two years.

Toronto extends Barrios for $131MM/ 7 years … very durable pitcher but with a 3.52 ERA in 2021 and a career ERA 4.04.

Basically some very good money being doled out.

Probably will keep the Padres out of the SP market expecting the contract to a lower risk higher quality to be very very large .. gamble on what they have recovering for injury and spend on hitters. Beginning to look as though a “normal” Darvish, Snell, Clevinger, Lamet, Paddack will be real bargains.

On the flip side … the trade value of some of the Padre arms (even with injury concerns) may be greater than we think. Maybe not now but maybe after some ST work and before the season begins?

Moves to set 40 man for Rule 5 ... minor surprises:

Padres add Gore ... Wilson ... Rosario ... Contreras.

They had one open roster slot ... lost RP Anderson to TOR on waivers ... assigned Ona and Lawson to EP (they cleared waivers apparently).

Adding Contreras was a bit out of the blue ... 21 year old RHP last pitched in 2019 (FW) then TJ surgery. Was (is) a pretty good prospect. Sort of fell out of our radar but I guess the Padres liked him and probably have seen his recovery path.

Also a bit surprised on not protecting Valenzuela ... catcher who show potential to hit and play defense seems like a player to bet on.

On the departure side ... maybe the injuries to Ona and Lawson are more worrisome than we know or, in the Padres view, make them unlike to be selected and kept via Rule 5 ... don't think (but not sure) if either quality as minor league FA.

Holding on to Guerra surprised me even with his high potential he has no minor league options ... so make the 26 man or hit waivers in ST. Maybe he gets DFA later when the Padres sign a FA for the 26 man ... with Ona out and Rosario in think they only have 13 position players on the roster and in 2022 they need 13 on the 26 man.

With the NYY designating Frazier for assignment, does Preller try to work out a minor level trade for an OF with some potential and a modest arb salary for next season?

Would Kim for Frazier be a good move for SD?
