Minor League Discussion

On Edwards, he will get another 100+ AB in LE this year ... get work in the winter instructs and ST ... if he continues his performance a good chance he he starts 2020 in AMA. Padres will not waste a 40 man slot on him at this point with no chance of being on the 25 man for a couple of years (don't need to for quite some time). Next year in AMA will be the real test ... big jump for A+ ... but if he excels there could see him making a Tatis type jump in 2021 if Urias does not lock down the 2B slot .. might even move to the "super utility role" since he is already capable of SS/2B. Outside chance (not sure about his arm) he could get a move to CF sooner IF Urias really establishes himself at the 2B next season. Would give the super utility role a boost while providing a potential CF option in advance of Abrams.

On Abrams a few of things that may delay his shift to CF: first, they may want him at his comfort position this early so his offense can be the focus to accelerate his development, as an "elite" SS he may have more trade value down the road, plus the may have an informal understanding that they will let him work as a SS initially since he Ade it clear that was his preference. Plus I would not rule out him getting time at 2B before the CF shift ... some insurance if Urias and Edwards don't develop into top flight 2B. With all that, IF Abrams performance in full season next year really takes off ... with a CF need in the system ... that conversion to CF may be in 2021. Abrams ... like Tatis and Edwards looks to be a candidate to move out of low A quickly and make a case for the Padres ahead of the "normal" progression.

Still both young and have a lot to show against upper level talent ... so optimistic but with some caution. Tatis may be spoiling us on the speed an elite prospect can arrive (and be successful).

Edwards could be the reason AJ even considers trading Urias.

If that happens you can be sure his advancement will be accelerated.

Miller could hold it down(along with a veteran like Garcia) until 2021-22.

I wish we could swap out Kinsler for Howie Kendrick for 2020.....

BA sez ... 4 Padres' Farm Boyz are *HOT*!!! 🙂

12. Luis Campusano, C, Padres

14. Josh Naylor, OF/1B, Padres

15. Gabriel Arias, SS, Padres

16. Ty France, 3B, Padres

With the add of Trammel ... likely to go the AA ... who gets the bump up to AAA?

Olivares - Reed - Orosco - Kohlway are all doing well enough to not get benched, demented or released.

Given how hot Olivares has been for the past couple of months ... getting him CF time in AAA could set him up to be a factor for the Padres in 2020.

Think Olivares even with the bump up is very underrated; he's clearly & consistently outperformed Reed all season.

A month in AAA before a Sept cameo callup sounds perfect.  Trammell won't be added to 40-man this season or offseason, but we'll see him in ST.

MLBPipeline slots Trammel as the Padre #3 prospect (was CINN #1)

and slots L.Allen as the REDS #3 prospect (was SD #7 .. I think)

shows a bit of a strength of system comparison.

Any update on Javvy Guerra?

Has the switch from SS to P gone as hoped?

After Patino dominates with 8.1 scoreless, Javy Guerra strikes out the top 2 prospects in the Giant’s system to end the game.

Has the switch from SS to P gone as hoped?

From my perspective much better than expected given this being the 1st season and it is in A+. All the reports are he has the velocity (with movement) and a good breaking pitch. Padres seem to be easing him into the role ... basically rolling him our every third game in July and for 1 inning appearances.

Results are good if you look behind the season totals: in two appearances (his first and one in July) he went 2 innings, 6 hits, 6 ER, 3K. However, in his other 9 appearances his was very good: 9 innings, 4 hits, 1 ER, 14K. So it appears he has the skills and is getting results.

A problem with Guerra’s future is that he is out of minor league options for 2020. So, if he does not make the 25 man roster out of ST, he will have to be exposed to waivers. Given the need for RP in MLB and the fact that a decent upside RP likely can be carried by a lot of teams as the 13th arm ... big risk he would be claimed (better than the average Rule 5 type).

That puts the Padres in an interesting position at the end of the season .... they need to build a 40 man roster while absorbing the 60 day IL players ... as it stands six of the current 46 need to be removed. If one is not Guerra, then who? Then in late November they need more cuts to accommodate the players to be protected from Rule 5 (if any) ... if Guerra passes part 1 does he survive part 2? With the ban on trading ML players until the end of the World Series (as I understand the rule) there is a very small window to make trades (to lower rostered players) before they have to lock in the roster for Rule 5.

Is Guerra good enough to be projected as making the 25 man roster out of ST .... if not when is the best time to DFA him and try to sneak him through waivers?

From today's DFR ...

Rather than let Patiño face the top two prospects in the Giants system for a fourth time (they were 0-for-6 against him) after 94 pitches, Tony Tarasco turned to Javy Guerra. The flame-throwing former shortstop was a bit wild but struck out both batters easily.  Guerra is averaging 13.9 K/9. Encouragingly, he’s walked just one over his last eight innings.
