Minor League Discussion

For a little more perspective on near term future on the system ... likely Urias, Morejon, L.Allen, Baez, and Munoz all graduate by mid-May next year. For argument, if Gore follows the Paddack route ... he too will be graduated ... but likely in 2020 at some point.

What does that leave:

1. Patino (55) in A+

2. Abrams (55) in R

3. Edwards (55) in A+

4. Weathers (55) in A

5. Campusano (50) in A+

======

6. A.Allen (45) in AAA

7, Miller (45) in AA

8, Potts (45) in AA

9. Ornelas (45) in R

10. Marcano (45) in A

That has the makings (unless some 45 rated players really jump) into a mid-pack system (if not a bit lower). Only 4 “55” is not much depth and likely only Patino might help in 2020-21. Need to really hope those “graduated” prospects produce as projected.

A lot of guys who could still develop or at minimum help the major league team that aren’t on that list.

Olivares?

Torrens and Reed(not giving up on him) also in AA.

Gabriel Arias still has potential to be a very good ML SS.

Esteury Ruiz.......Joey Cantillo.......Pedro Avila.

Where’s  Hudson Head?

Players get mislabeled all the time and guys come from nowhere every year like  Patino did,

could someone like Augustin Ruiz be next?

I trust we’ll be fine even after all the graduations.

Plus...we are graduating an obscenely high number of guys earlier than most teams would.

Agree that there is a lot of "upgrade" potential in the lower levels that probably needs some full season time to get recognition. Head should be one of those whose ranking and rating probably suffered for zero professional exposure as the ranks were established coupled with a 3rd round selection. However, baring a Tatis type sprint through the minors (not many Tatis clones out there) ... reaping the benefits is more like 4-5 years out ... good for replacement of the current / near term ML pieces.

Sort of why the current (and 2020) arrival of mass of quality prospects has to turn into a quality core for the next 4 years (just don't know which ones will step up and which ones will fail or just settle into mediocrity) ... a bit thin in additional near term reinforcements that match the upside of the current crop.

Since I am addicted to improving the offense (specifically the OF) to be competitive ... I see future moves in that area being the priority. Internally, maybe Olivares (who I like) can help even if it is just as 3 position 4th OF and, in a similar view, Cordoba but both maybe in 2021 before any real production kick in. Might see Reed (not really betting yes) but hard to see anything but a 5th OF for defensive purposes. Ona in 2021? Just don't see an "impact" near term piece to move into a starting role ... actually no one in A-ball either. Maybe we hope that Abrams (moved to CF) or Head is the next Tatis and shoots up the minors and arrive is 2022?

Padres really need Mejia and Urias to lock down the INF of the future ... Baez, Munoz, and Wingenter to lock down the pen of the future ... Paddack, Gore (have to bet on him) to be top of the rotation options then get Patino and Morejon live up to their top of the rotation potential (or at least setting in at #3 status) then fill that last slot with quality from one of Quantrill, Allen, or Lamet. That could open up some productive trades of Lucchesi and Lauer (in combo with some "left over" prospects and/or OF) to get a real long term upgrade in the OF.

Basically if the Padres want to be in the playoffs in 2020-22 .... they really need a lot of the current graduates to deliver at a high level and not just be replacement "average".

Also not close but we need a couple guys to emerge from the Dominican League as well.

How's Edwards getting on in Elsinore?

Chance he jumps to Amarillo to start next season?

In 75 at bats:

.320 .363 .347

6sb 1cs

So pretty much the same as he was doing at FW.

My guess is he starts next season at LE but moves up quickly with continued hitting.

Should he continue on the same trajectory, I'd love to see him in SD at the end of next year when rosters are expanded. Give him a taste and be ready to plug him in opening day 2021.

Is he playing 2B? Or do they have him moving around?

Bip Roberts, part 2?

With all our depth up the middle, I'd move Abrams to CF ASAP.

I've only seen that he's played 2b and DH'd.
