Quote from MrPadre19 on August 1, 2019, 10:30 amEven more impressive that the Braves were able to upgrade their bullpen with "three" pieces without touching any of their top prospects.

Quote from fenn68 on August 1, 2019, 10:58 amInteresting dynamic at this deadline:
1. Potential buyers ... no matter the perceived need and quality of the player sought ... were not willing to use the the elite prospects except arguably Trammel. The next few “better” prospects moved have a lot of shortcomings.
2. Money still works ... keys to the deals of Greinke, Melancon, and Bauer ... three of the bigger names.
3. Maybe the number of elite talents on the market were more loved by the media than the opposing GMs. Add that with the sellers seeing low supply set over the top asks ... asks the many teams with slim farm systems could not meet even if they wanted. Then they remaining buyers who COULD afford the ask ... just may not have seen the player a game changing piece for the playoffs ... and clearly not at that price.
4. Clearly most teams are in the mode of balancing immediate and long-term benefits of moving players. The media (as evidenced by the group on MLB Network) want to everyone be in a “win now” mode and take every gamble possible on veterans to win. Not much on the adverse consequence of not being that one team that wins. Adverse consequence as seen with the NYY and Boston who have voided their farm systems (and bulked their payrolls) to the point they could not make needed moves for quality pieces. All in and being wrong ... moves teams (especially financially limited) to all out and 5 years of rebuild ... which the media will complain about too.
Seems to me a league that is clearly going younger (with real talent) ... getting those young players extended before FA and while low cost ... not only is curtailing the FA market (with a few exceptions) but could be curtailing the trade market where older veterans / higher cost pieces are just not as appealing vs. the better in house youth. Might take a few years to re-set the dynamic with the young players moving to FA while still young.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 1, 2019, 2:42 pmGood news on Guerra! Especially the lack of walks the past 4/5 outings.
Since he's on the 40 man, any chance at all we see him in San Diego in September?
Kind of segways me into Ronald Bolanos. His numbers aren't great but I haven't seen the peripherals - is he making a case for himself? Does he start next year in El Paso? Or like anyone else of promise, keep him in Amarillo until he's ready for SD?

If it were me ... I would have him as a Sept call-up to get a ML read on him and give a worn bullpen more rest days. As I said in the other tred ... going to be hard to hold on to him since he is out of minor league options ... 25 man roster next year or DFA (and very likely to be claimed with his stuff and the shortage of RP in MLB) ... the claiming team could always DFA him later and maybe keep him in their system. Going to be tricky for the Padres.

Quote from fenn68 on August 1, 2019, 3:36 pmNoticed the Padres promoted OF Orozco from AMA to EP after the arrival of Trammel ... likely to fill for whomever comes to SD.
Would have thought Olivares given his hitting but maybe the Padres are equally concerned about hurting a hitter’s development in the PCL as with the pitchers.
=====
saw a note that Trammel was going to be the CF in AMA .. not sure who is going LF and RF between Reed and Olivares.

Quote from fenn68 on August 1, 2019, 3:43 pmLooks like Edwards is making a case to go to AMA to begin next season. 2 more hits and a BB today taking his slash line to 360/400/382 in 89 AB in LE. Plus he played SS with Arias at 2B. Both getting reps at both spots.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 1, 2019, 7:05 pmI see Edwards and Abrams moving quickly.....ala Tatis.
Unless they hit a slump...but they just don’t strike me as the type of players to not hit.
In a couple years we could actually still be one of the youngest teams in baseball with guys like Margot and Myers moving on(maybe) and guys like Kinsler definitely gone and Edwards/Gore/Patino/ arriving.

Reed LF, Olivares RF tonight. Trammell 0-4, ER

Quote from fenn68 on August 2, 2019, 6:40 amJuly has stoked the optimism on quite a few LE prospects. Maybe results are soaring based on player development or just because July is a good hitting month in the CalLeague but consider July's performance for the following:
Arias (19) ..............106 AB ... 368/402/547
Edwards (19) .......... 85 AB .. 353/389/376
Campusano (20) .... 92 AB .. 326/375/478
Cordoba (23) ........ 110 AB ... 327/405/445
Then consider that Arias is a plus defensive SS ... Edwards is just in his 1st full season ... Campusano is a hitting catcher who has been leading he league in hitting most of the season ... and Cordoba is recovering from serious injury that set him back plus very athletic that can play INF/OF ... none are just one dimensional prospects.
In about 2-3 years Padres will have some tough calls ... but builds a pretty good cache of trade pieces (these players or ML incumbents).
