I really hope Arias keeps progressing with the bat.

At 19 and in High A he’s improved in almost every area at the plate.

If he can improve his K/BB rate some he could become a solid major league shortstop.

I think of him as a Freddie Galvis type player.

Agree .... If (and I know this is always risky) you just look at his Apr / Jun / July stats he is hitting .293 (63/215) which is good for a 19 year old in high A. Depressing his overall stats was a very bad May. Good sign for future development and as I recall his defense at SS was his featured skill.

Plus he is listed at 6'1" / 201 making a pretty solid kid that could (should) add some sock to his stat line.

Looks like Buddy Reed is finally starting to put things together this year.

He’s had a good run the last 10 games or so and currently is 5 for 5 in his last 2 games.

Time for a "long shot" prospect for a utility bench role on the Padres? Consider:

Ivan Castillo (24) switch hitting SS/2B in Amarillo.

Based on his history .... signed by the Padres as a minor league FA at age 23 after having been in both the Cleveland and Toronto organizations (mainly as a SS). Not a good hitter in the early years then got some life in 2017 (A+) ... repeated A+ and hit better but was let go by the Blue Jays after the season. Not the history for a good prospect.

2019 arrives ... Padres put Castillo in AA and he really hits while playing SS/2B plus some OF. His slash line:

AVG ... .347 #1 in TL by .034

OBP ... .373 #8

SLG ... .530 #2

OPS ... .903 #2 very solid for a middle INF

Maybe just a mirage but he is not really "old for the league" or benefiting form "repeating the league" and his history is one of late improvement with the bat.

So, do the Padres development folks see enough to warrant adding him to the 40 man this winter and give him a run at middle INF back up on an expanded 26 man roster next season or at least as insurance in AAA? Urias and Miller are the only upper minors prospects worth watching and Kinsler and Garcia are "older" / shorter term pieces who may be moved in 2020 (or sooner).

Well the long awaited return of Bryan Mitchell to EP happened yesterday. The result is as many expected ... disaster.

Mitchell started and went 1.2 innings giving up 6 hits, 3 walks leading to 7 earned runs.

At age 28 ... maybe just time to move on and let those minor league appearances be allocated to the real prospects.

After 20 games (98 PA) ... #1 pick Abrams has a line 446/470/717 that is exceptional even for AZ rookie ball. We should be near the point of bumping him up and giving him a month or so in a more challenging environment.

Did notice the Pads move Skender up to FW from AZ ... was hitting well after missing the better part of two years with injuries.

Also on the positive, 3rd round pick Head (and winner of the surprising $3MM bonus) is off to a good start in AZ ... 10 games (46 PA) 368/478/605.

Given the relatively weak Tri Cities offense ... if the development folks like the AZ work by these two could (should) we see both start their accelerated development by a bump to TC to finish the year. Might be a good evaluation took for the likely placement in FW next season.

Reed 2 for 4 with two home runs yesterday and Potts 3 for 5 with one home run for Amarillo.

If these two can regain what they had we will be in even better shape than we already are.

Especially Reed....who is older than Potts and at a position of much more need.

Reed is going to make the structure of the 40 man this winter interesting if finishes the remainder of the season in that large zone of not that bad but not that good with the bat.

He has the great tool set (with the bat in question) and the apparent character / personality the organization loves ... so outstanding upside at a position of need (and ML value). But can he show any potential with the bat? And will he show enough to warrant a 40 man slot.

If he makes it ... someone else is off the 40 man, so not just about him and potential. My guess, baring falling flat on his face in the remainder of the season, he makes it on the upside potential but I guess they have to view him differently than Gettys who had a similar profile but was not protected last year (and not selected).

Again, an interesting decision by the front office.

Reed would be gone if left unprotected.

That would be the difference.

I agree he will be protected and given at least next year to prove it was warranted.

Have note in a couple of different write-ups the use of Ty France at 2B in addition to the normal 3B/1B .... but then the added comment of him become that super utility type since he has history as a catcher in HS that could be used in an emergency and COULD play LF.

That begs the question as to why the Padres have not shuttled him into LF in EP on a regular basis (as they did with Naylor) ... his future with the Padres at 3B/1B/C/2B is not bright in terms of playing time .... so getting some valuable reps in LF should be important ... and considering my discourse on the state of Renfroe / Reyes ... maybe signifiant more ML playing time.

Not as though EP has great OF prospects playing right now.

France needs to play nothing but LF for 90% of the time going forward. Potts, coming into Pro ball as a SS needs to play 2B and LF about 40% at each position. That way if you need to use Urias (SD has some issue with him) as a trade chip. Potts can be ready to become the next 2B. Neither is going to see 3B unless an injury comes up. I honestly think both will become trade assets soon.
