Minor League Discussion

Does Joey Cantillo deserve a thread?  Or does "hitting high-80s" mean "he may do well in minors, but has little shot in the bigs"?

From today's DFR ...

LHP Joey Cantillo had another excellent outing Thursday, tossing six shutout frames in the victory. Castillo struck out a career-high ten batters without walking one. The 20-year-old out of Hawaii was sitting high-80s with his fastball, but he places it and his devastating change-up to all quadrants of the strike zone. He also snapped off a few curveballs that kept hitters off-balance all game long. The southpaw has racked up 73 strikeouts in 55 innings for the TinCaps this season.

Many many pitchers have had long successful careers in MLB not hitting 90.

Maybe bad memory but I thought Cantillo was a little bit faster than 90MPH. Big guy but only 19 so maybe he could add a bit.

If he has the array of pitches and knows how to use them ... he would be fine (see Keuchel).

Was watching some Farm games last night and saw Tucapita Marcano single to lead off the 9th and at 1b he did the Sugar Cane Chop!

Thought that was pretty cool.

Tatis’s influence filtering down to the “youngsters”.

Darkhorse prospect to keep an eye on....Ethan Skender.

This kid was drafted in 2016 but injuries have kept him from ever seeing the field until last week.

Missed three seasons.

In his first 3 professional games he is currently 5 for 8 with 2 home runs!

Oh and Michael Gettys has homeruns in 5 straight games

Question for the Draft gurus.

After Fellows signs we won't have alot of $$ left.

Who else do you think we can sign?

Any chance we can sign Tarver?

Or do we only have enough to entice Feole and/or Rascon?

I ask because....man,Tarver sure looks like an athlete and a hitter.

The others just look like pitchers with nothing special to my untrained eye.

BTW...Feole has a Luchessi like delivery.

From today's DFR ... another kid to keep eyes on ...

Almost a year to the day after Omar Cruz struck out 10 in four one-hit innings in his second AZL start, the lefty did the same in the Northwest League. The 20-year-old struck out six of the first seven he faced, but in the third inning he walked two, hit a batter and committed an error on a sacrifice bunt to plate a run. He avoided further damage by striking out three straight batters with the bases loaded. Only four of the 17 batters he faced put the ball in play – two were bunts and just one reached the outfield. Cruz, who posted a 2.01 ERA in six outings for the Dust Devils last year, was sent back to the Northwest League this year to improve command and efficiency this year.

I guess it depends a bit on the deal with Fellows ... a college JR taken in the 6th round does not seem to have much leverage so not likely an over slot candidate. Slot value is not that great so even if under slot no like to add much the the pool. However, after the Head signing, I have no idea on any signing range and, in turn, lost track of what might be still available before getting into draft pick penalty zone.

Not sure what is going on with Feole as a college JR who slid to the 11 round. Usually when a team takes some at 11 they are pretty sure he can be signed. If the $125K can't get it done ... not sure how much over he is seeking but do not really seeing him as one I would waste over slot money unless he is the only one left who will sign for the available money. I guess he could think he could not do that much worse than the $125K by going back to school for his senior season and gets the benefit of completing his education.

On Tarver, I thought I had seen a report that the Padres and Tarver were in agreement some time back (report could have been premature). Maybe they need Fellows to sign under slot or maybe the final deal with Head took the money off the table (sort of a contingent offer deal).

At this point, after Fellows, hard to guess if they sign anyone else.

I saw something(speculation?)that after signing Fellows we should have about $300k left.

Would that be enough to keep Carver from MSU?
