Minor League Discussion

PreviousPage 80 of 356Next

Something to mess with our minds in evaluating AAA prospects .... AAA has changed from the "minor league baseball" to the "major league baseball".

Apparently the result so far is "Triple-A hitters are hitting home runs at a rate of 135 percent of last year’s rate." per Baseball America. Yes the balls are different and the ML ball carries better. I guess we should get a better read on the AAA stats translating to ML stats since they are using the same ball.

===

In a related vein, the 3 true outcomes (walk, K, HR) are up again in 2019 in the ML AND at all levels of the minors. Plus the lame attempts of MLB to shorten the game / quicken the pace is resulting in the 2019 games being longer ... something over 3 hours (with clearly less action .. see 3 true outcomes).

====

If MLB and the players' union don't admit to a need to improve the game and make some bold moves we may not need fielders soon and will be watching 9 innings of HR derby mixed with walks and Ks lasting somehow even longer.

In addition to the ball carrying better than the ML ball, the seams are smaller as well. Therefore breaking balls are probably not as crisp as they were last season for AAA pitchers. They will need some time to get used to the less pronounced seams and compensate when it comes to the breaking pitches. Conversely, it should provide a quicker transition/more steady performance to the Majors when called up.

Weathers to the IL in FW.

A blast from the past is activated ... Austin Smith .... 2nd round pick out of HS in 2015. Almost forgot he was still around.

Tatis.....Espinoza......Weathers.....Morejon.

We just can not have nice things.

one of those is not like the other 3

Morejon isn’t in the IL but he’s still hurt.

Lets hope when he comes back he stays back.....

From a chat at BA ...

Ryan (DC):

    How has the introduction of the MLB ball into AAA and subsequent offensive barrage affected your thinking when putting together the Hot Sheet and/or Top 100 rankings?

Josh Norris: It's a little too early for it to have had an effect on The Top 100 list, but yes, it absolutely affected my thinking on this week's Hot Sheet. There were two more guys this week in AAA who hit 6 home runs this week—Kevin Cron and Jacob Scavuzzo—but neither made the list. Part of the reason for their exclusion was because of the ball in AAA, specifically the way the ball has been flying in the PCL, and even more specifically, El Paso.

re: https://madfriars.com/2019/05/02/balls-fly-out-of-hodgetown-in-sod-poodles-loss/

I'm not a fan of Philip Wellman, Sod Poodles' manager ... what does "We preach shut down innings here" mean?

Shouldn't every inning be a "shut down inning" if it's possible for a "shut down inning" to exist?

I guess it's like "clutch" ... but ... iirc ... Tony Gwynn tried to be "clutch" *EVERY AT BAT*!

It's about focusing on a quick, scoreless inning after your team gets the lead. It's hardly a new concept.

re: "shut down inning" is hardly a new concept ...

That's kinda my point ... it's specifically OLD SCHOOL THINKING ... and I don't think it's healthy ... as opposed to what he was preaching the very next day = "The key is to be consistent and repeat the level of intensity and focus that we played with tonight and be able to do it more often" ... nothing wrong with that ... and it's the exact opposite of "shut down inning"!

I hear you MrP, although Tatis, Wheathers and Morejon situations apparently might be solve in the next couple of weeks, Espinoza really hearts because I remembers when we got him it was like "are you kidding? Do we really have a player with that kind of talent in our system?"

The video of Javy Guerra pitching looks pretty promising.

What you don't see is that he already has the "hitting like a major league pitcher" part down.
