Minor League Discussion

From Scott Miller:
Across #MLB, 33% of plate appearances in 2018 have ended in K, BB or HBP. And into today, there have been 389 more strikeouts than hits (6,392-6,003). Talk pace of play all you want, but the lack of putting ball in play has passed epidemic & reached crisis point.

The
#Padres are whiffing at an incredible rate, on track right now to finish with 1,701 Ks
which would set an #MLB record (#Brewers, 1,571 set in 2017) and obliterate their own team record (1,500, set in 2016).
===================
Not sure where to go with this but the K% is just becoming irrelevant with MLB players (organizations) ... that is not good in my mind BUT reality. So maybe the threshold for workable K% is just higher now.
However, I still look for a bit of the old thinking and the value of low K% with the ball in play ... looking at that side of the Padres minors (so far) there are a few "prospects" that embody the old thinking:
Fort Wayne: Ornelas (18) at 18.3%; Campusano (19) at 16.1%; Rosario (18) at 15.3%; and Fernandez (19) at 14.9%
Lake Elsinore: Torrens (22) at 10.4%; Potts (19) at 19.0%; Oliveras (22) at 19.6%
San Antonio: Naylor (21) at 10.3%; Allen (24) at 14.5%
El Paso: Cordero (23) at 16.7%; Urias (21) at 19.0%; Reyes (22) at 21.0%
Just some positive to balance the uber K% prospects ... hope these guys survive.

Sorry about the format .... somehow got messed up and could not undo it.

Osvaldo Hernandez looks legit. Still just 19, signed for 2m out of Cuba. Sits in 88-93 range got it up to 95 in yesterdays start. Could stand to clean up his Slider/Curve as it still has some hump to it, but he's confident enough in the pitch to throw it in 3 ball counts.

Gore threw another bullpen session yesterday. Purely a guess, but that would make Tuesday make some sense for his return from the DL.

Yep.

At what point does it become clear that Fernando Tatis, Jr is not going to be the Padres shortstop next year and a decision between Galvis and Guerra will need to be made?

Probably the strategy for the 2019 SS will come at the end of the year ... no hurry since Guerra and Tatis are going nowhere.

Galvis is a wait and see. FA after the season and even if the Padres want to resign him, no indication that he would not prefer to test FA first unless offered a "substantial" deal. Note that after a hot start ... hitting has fallen way off and if that continues the Padres' interest may be limited.

Next winter's FA market could be appealing (especially if there are not a lot of teams looking for a starting SS):

Shortstops

Elvis Andrus (30) — can opt out of remaining four years and $58MM
Asdrubal Cabrera (33)
Alcides Escobar (32)
Eduardo Escobar (30)
Freddy Galvis (29)
Marwin Gonzalez (30)
Adeiny Hechavarria (30)
Jose Iglesias (29)
Manny Machado (26)
Jordy Mercer (32)
Eduardo Nuñez (32) — $4MM player option with a $2MM buyout
Cliff Pennington (35)
Jose Reyes (36)
Eric Sogard (33)

Nothing "great" (Padres will not be in on Machado) but Iglesias or Hechavarria could be as good (or better) than Galvis ... might boil down to who takes the lowest contract.

Reality is starting to set in for Galvis, who, despite the hot start has a plummeting OBP and has one more extra-base hit than Clayton Richard on the year.

Guerra is striking out more often than Tatis.

Reality? Maybe I'm missing your point.  This is who he is: good field, a little speed and below average offense.  I thought that was the profile all along.

And if it's time to give up on Tatis maturing enough to contribute next year, then it's time to give up on Gore too since he can't stay healthy. 😉

Did I read that Barry Bloom is trolling him on Twitter? Weird if true. Bad blood with his Dad?

I should stick to not guessing. Thompson will start Tuesday. They're going to give Gore at least one more throwing session before activating him.
