Ona showing a pulse ... 3rd HR for the Storm ...

Sod Poodles.

Way premature BUT what is the over/under date of some of the top SP prospects getting bumped up a league to accelerate the potential arrival time in the ML and give them more of a challenge (something the Padres development staff embraces)?

NOT suggesting being bumped up to the Padres but working towards getting the top prospects to the Padres sooner.

Padres are sitting with a SP staff that few see as the future (maybe except Paddack as a mid-rotation guy) and at best the other are mostly #4-5 level SP. IF they are targeting winning in 2020-21, getting their potential top of the rotation prospects maybe a year sooner is important for that plan.

Early Gore, Patino, Weathers have all shown well in A/A+ ... an early bump up one level may serve to challenge them and serve to get them to the Padres a year sooner.

Probably not a question of IF but WHEN they get bumped.

Dont forget that we project to get Richards into the rotation next season, as well as the return of Lamet also. That alone bumps every current SP down two notches. And helps balance the over abundance of LHP that we are throwing out there each night. Separating Luchessi and Lauer could help a lot.

So next season could look like, Richards, Luchessi, Lament, Strahm, Paddock.

I guess I am still a bit skeptical on the "effective" return of Lamet even in 2020. Potential yes but he was not that impactful before he went down with the TJ ... plus shouldn't we still expect some innings limits as we are seeing from Paddack and Espinosa?

Richards does have the track record (albeit he will be a one and done in 2020) ... but still how long will it be for him to get into effective game shape in 2020?

Just would not yet lock in on either of these arms ... yet.

I think you indirectly point out a major issue:  Gore, etc should not be expected to be a #1 or even #2 SP the day they arrive in MLB. If the Pads clearly intend to contend in 2020 on; the first few years they need to add a SP at the top that is that guy.

They obviously didn't spend 15-17 MM for one year of Garrett Richards because they didn't believe he could be up at top of rotation; but he will have an innings limit.   Adding an elite SP doesn't "hold back" anyone; it slots them where they're more likely to be successful, and pushes a current #5 SP to AAA.

I like how Pads are willing to push guys to challenge then, but there are a lot of negative side effects:  none of our pitchers can bunt, let alone hit, because they've never taken an AB.  But what I'm really sick of is SP's arriving with only 2 workable pitches.  Seems like it happened with Lamet, now Paddack... that's what the Minors is FOR!

I would guess if Richards stays healthy and pitches well the idea is to sign him for a couple more seasons.

Along with Lamet that's 2/5 of the rotation already established.

I suspect Lauer/Luchessi/Paddack to be the other three barring something unforseen...injury...sudden regression etc.

So signing another starter drops one of these out for 2020 and leaves no room for Quantril/Allen/Avila/Morejon.

I'm all for acquiring a "true Ace" but I have the feeling AJ is hoping to fill the staff going forward with what we already have.

Obviously we could trade some of these guys......I just don't think that's the plan.

Dear Padres,

Please don't send Gore and Patino to AAA.

Ty France is hitting .415 and is barely in the top 5 in the League.

They are using MLB balls and we don't need that negativity for our top Pitching prospects.

I guess I need to actually see the returns of Lamet and Richards before I can rely on them for 2020 ... being effective that is.

Keep in mind Lamet has had only 21 ML starts with a poor 4.57 ERA ... great potential yes BUT not developed at the point of TJ ... many thought he would evolved into a late inning RP.

Better chance for Richards in my mind given his long history of  ML success but still will his command be there for the early part of the season (usually an issue coming off TJ) and will he too have innings limits? Thinking this was a big roll the dice by Preller on both Richards and the rest of the team getting to contention level.

It will be interesting to see how the Padres view Richards going forward ... might depend a bit on how well the team performs in 2020 and how well Richards performs. If the team is not contending and Richards is doing well ... might be a trade deadline chip or alternatively after the season get a QO which would be declined and they get a draft pick. At that point Richards will be 31 and likely shooting for that last big FA deal ... while the Padres with all the top SP prospects might not want to commit long term / big money ... rather be flexible with the money for maybe a different need. Could go a lot of ways.

Also, not writing off Strahm as a SP for 2020 ... he has the stuff.

As for the SP top prospects ... seeing them starting to squeeze out the bottom level SP in 2021 and maybe by 2023 assume the mantel of "upper rotation ... #1-2 " status.

Agree .... the jump from AA to ML should not be that hard for "elite" SP prospects.

Aside: any early read on how the new Amarillo ballpark plays? Hitter or pitcher friendly ... usually not neutral.
