Minor League Discussion

I agree we can't know the effectiveness of Richards or Lamet obviously but they will certainly have a spot unless they lose it.

Also youre right....i left out Strahm.

So if we add a top of rotation starter it would seem we would have to trade two of these guys in the process.

I can't see guys like Patino sitting in AAA waiting their turn for a couple years.

Dear Padres,

Please don't send Gore and Patino to AAA.

Ty France is hitting .415 and is barely in the top 5 in the League.

They are using MLB balls and we don't need that negativity for our top Pitching prospects.

Agree .... the jump from AA to ML should not be that hard for "elite" SP prospects.

Aside: any early read on how the new Amarillo ballpark plays? Hitter or pitcher friendly ... usually not neutral.

From watching the games on milb.tv, the feel I get from the announcers is the ball flies out to right field. It plays as a hitters park overall, particularly for left handed hitters.

Having said that, Ona looks like a different player this year in what little I’ve seen of him. Bat looks much quicker, he reminds me of the hitter I saw on video in the Caribbean 18 and under playoffs five years ago.

Where does Ona currently rank in minor league system?

Are guys like Ornelas and Potts( who could get moved to a corner outfield spot) rated higher still?

Early looks, the ball is really jumping. It'll be interesting to see if that holds; my understanding is that the wind patterns there may mean that it's blowing in a lot more by the time we get to summer.

Any chance we see France manning 2nd base in SD, whilst Urias finds his confidence in AAA?

Kinsler just doesn't seem to have much of anything left.

Or even bigger......if Hosmer is still straddling the Mendoza line by the All Star break and we are out of contention( most likely) does the organisation fire a shot across the bough and bring up Naylor to play 1B?

I know, it sounds ridiculous as I'm writing it but maybe the club is finally demanding results, telling players either you produce, or we'll find someone who does? You know at some point, that has to happen - does it start this year with our vets?

Again, no need to insult me - just throwing an idea in from left field.

A possibility ... but Kinsler likely will get another month of work to see if he makes a turn around (at least to 2018 levels). Enough of a proven veteran to warrant the time to assess if he is just in an early season / league change slump or just lost it.

However, France needs a lot of work at 2B in AAA (don't really want to see a Myers to 3B scenario) ... so we should see how much EP uses him at 2B. Add that if Urias catches fire ... he probably would get the first shot given his defense value.

Injury to Kinsler (if it happens) would change the mix.

Hosmer continuing to struggle to that extend is very unlikely. However IF they wanted to adjust his playing time to avoid some of the more problematic pitching opponents ... first shot may go to France (on the 40 man) whose RHH could complement the LHH Hosmer who real weakness in against LHP.

On Naylor ... who the Padres really like for his bat ... likely will get a longer run in AAA (in part since he is not on the 40 man) ... probably earliest after the trade deadline if the Padres clear some roster space.

When Naylor makes the 25 man ... fair chance it is at the expense of at least 2 of Renfroe, Cordero, or Reyes ... maybe Jankowski. Next year's 26 man rosters (13 position players) will help offer a spot ... but can say that about France and  A.Allen as rookies taking that extra position slot.

If not at this trade deadline ... next winter ... Preller is going to have to do some real housecleaning off the current 40 man and out of the prospects who need to be added while balancing the needs to field a quality ML team in 2020 while preserving the best prospects for the future. Some "good" prospect will be dealt or exposed to Rule 5 and some veterans of note will be moved (maybe a less than expected) since a number of those better prospects are (or near) ML ready for the 25 man. Also, by mid-year, Preller has to deal with the five 60 day IL players returning ... potentially all by the end of the year. Going to be very hard for Preller to add non-roster players until these other issues play out lest he gets trapped into DFAing someone he does not want to lose.
