Minor League Discussion

PreviousPage 75 of 355Next

I might be interesting to watch some of the minor leagues moves over the next few weeks (either add or position shifts). Two spots:

CF in EP: with Jankowski and Cordero out with injury and only Margot a legit ML CF .... has to be a concern since the EP CF to start is Gettys (the classic 5 tool potential IF HE CAN ONLY HIT) who is off to a terrible hitting start in AAA. In AA the two options (Reed and Olivares) don't seem at all ready. EP put Pirela in CF the other day (not the defensive option most seek).

SS in EP: with the Urias call-up, unclear where EP goes .... called up Batten for AA (a 32nd round pick in 2017 ... more a "system guy") and went with Mejia-Brean the other day and he is NOT a SS. Oddly they did not move Quiroz to SS but he really a 2B and not more than a fill SS. IF (when) Urias is sent back down ... takes care of the the short run. Maybe Miller at some point but might need to show a bit in AA first.

So EP CF and SS are questions. Don't know his status or the Padres' plan but Cordero is a potential option if he is healthy in XST ... actually at either spot ... was playing SS but did hear the Padres were considering reverting him back to his original position in the OF. Hard to make the call on where his bat is at this point ... but that was his calling card when selected as a Rule 5 pick (and did show potential with the Pads) plus quite athletic.

Again potential for some adds back into the system.

Stupid stats:

After one turn through the rotation in AAA.  IP by starters:  4.2, 3.0, 2.1, 2.0, 1.1.  “Best” WHIP = 1.71.

Cumulative stats in those 13.1 IP:  26 H, 23 R, 20 ER, 10 BB, 10 K = 13.50 ERA

Keep in mind those were all Home games…  Ugggh.  Let’s hope these guys can turn it around on the road!

Didn't think starting pitching would be their strong suit but also didnt expect  Quantrill and Allen to both completely lose it at the same time.

That Spring battle for the 5th spot and subsequent fail on their last outing seems to be carrying over for both these guys.

Or it's just one start.........:)

Batten will be the everyday guy at SS in El Paso with Mejias-Brean in stopgap situations. Batten hadn't arrived in time for lineups to be submitted yesterday, thus the need for a stopgap.

Assuming you mean Allen Cordoba, he had never in his life played outfield in a game until he was with the big league club in 2017. He played primarily SS with a little exposure at 2B and 3B in the Cardinals system. He isn't a shortstop going forward, but will get a chance to play all over when he's healthy and ready to join an affiliate.

Yep, Allen Cordoba. From what I recall Cordoba was an OF when StL signed him and they immediately moved into the INF and that is where he stayed until the Padres selected him. (never seemed a good fit for the INF defensively). However the Padres did drop him into the OF in his ML run (actually he seemed better in LF than at SS ... at least to me). What triggered my comment was a piece (not sure by who) that reported the Padres would try to convert Cordoba to the OF this year.

Not good defensively at SS and unknown in the OF ... but the hitting potential is key. Probably not AAA ready either way and agree guessing he morphs into that elusive "versatile player" for the OF and INF.

Still EP needs a CF ....

Has Henry Henry been converted to a Closer now?

Reliever, not necessarily closer. Think you'll see him get a lot of multi-inning opportunities, but he was the right guy for the situation last night.

Reed is on Fire!

Potts......not so much.

Ona showing a pulse ... 3rd HR for the Storm ...
