Minor League Discussion

My comment is only vaguely related to your post, Howard, in that it involves Lauer.  Our Padres have given starts to at least five rookies this year in Luchessi, Lauer, Lockett, Kennedy, and Nix.  I can certainly see Luchessi and Nix as part of a good rotation.  If we still viewed all of these guys as part of our prospect pool, none of them are among our five best starting pitcher prospects.  I think the scouting community would be unanimous in placing Gore, Morejon, Paddack, Baez, Quantrill, and maybe even Allen, Patino, and Espinoza above all of those guys.  Granting that attrition and general baseball cruelty will impact that group, I see the makings of a tremendous pitching staff.

Hey Lance!  I still miss Ducksnorts 🙂

Moving this to the general "Minor League Discussion" ... it is amazing that we've seen 5 rookie starting pitchers!  Agree that Luchessi and Nix seem like the guys most likely to be part of a good rotation long term.  I'm bum'd how up and down Lauer has been ... mostly how low the "down"s have been ... he's been below average for too many starts.  The report I got on Lockett was better than I expected ... so he might be a good piece in the bullpen once he gets squeezed out of rotation by the next wave.  I don't have a report on Kennedy yet, but it'd be great if same is said for him ...

Gore - cream of the crop ...  I've read that some scouts thought he had a chance to blast thru minors and pitch in MLB next year ... that now seems unlikely ... but it sure seems like there's still good reason to believe he can reach his upside faster than typical ...

Morejon - I saw him pitch for Dust Devils last year ... and came away unimpressed ... he's clearly better than what I saw ... but ... he's down on my list ...

Paddack - sure seems like the real deal ... seems like we're going to see him in Padres uni next year ... seems like he's got #1 upside ... he's my favorite 2019 guy

Beaz - still work to do ... still lots of reason to expect good things ...

Quantrill - still work to do ... we'll see him next year, or not at all ... the Appel comp seems unavoidable ...

Allen - he's my #2 guy for 2019 ... seems as good as Lucchesi and Nix ...

Patino - seems like he's everyone's favorite right now ... a long ways away ... but I'm fan!  Here's my hope: Gore and Patino get a look in Sept 2020 ... battle for ROY in 2021 ... battle for Cy Young's in 2022 ... and beyond!

Espinoza - the next Paddack?  Let's hope!  If so, that puts him into the 2020 / 2021 wave with Gore and Patino 🙂

And ... David Weathers?  Jose Castillo?  Sure seems like Osvaldo Hernandez has forced his way into this conversation ... maybe Lawson or Thompson gets back on track ...

And ... I'm fascinated to see if Andres Munoz can harness his talent and be a force in the bull pen 🙂

The future, of our pitching anyway, seems BRIGHT!

There's no room in the bullpen for supbar SP when you think about it.

Munoz, Castillo, Strahm, Stock, Wieck, Wick, Diaz, Maton

Padres never released Torres as well right?

Quantrill has really responded to the confidence boost that went with the promotion.

Could we have Quantrill,Lucchesi and Nix all in the starting rotation at Opening day next year?

Could be but since Quantrill (and Allen) don't have to be put on the 40 man over the winter ... might have to wait until mid-season as others eliminate themselves (injury, poor performance).

Although not technically a prospect, I would not rule out Lamet being a factor in 2020. He is only 26 next season with 5 control years. He has wicked stuff and after the All-Star break in 2017 it was coming together (then the injury). IF he can return ... he has upper half of the rotation stuff.

First NOT suggesting that Lauer (or anyone in the system) is the next Corey Kluber but using him as the poster child for "giving up" on a pitching prospect too soon. Consider:

Kluber was drafted (4th round) by the Padres in 2007 out of college (Stetson).  At age 23 (2009) was so-so in LE (4.54 ERA) / SA (4.60) then at age 24 (2010) was still so-so in SA (3.45 ERA). Padres dealt him mid-season (for Ryan Ludwick) and not may saw that as a giving up a real upside prospect. Kluber goes out and wins two Cy Young Awards and is a dominate ML arm.

Jump to Lauer who was drafted (1st round) by the Padres in 2016 out of college (Kent State). At age 23 (2018) he is in the ML and struggling ... same pace that had Kluber struggling in A+/AA.

Sure Lauer may tank ... may just end up a #5 SP ... or maybe better but the point is that a longer leash on development is important to really find the winners out of an uncertain process (this applies to Quantrill too).

Kluber always had the K/9 and the 95-96mph fastball that you could project. Lauer is trying to get his FB to a point where he can project. Not to take away from your point of long leashes.

You know what? My parents put me on a long leash and it turns out all I really needed was a muzzle.

Looks like Basabe was pulled after running to third on throwing error.  Any idea what happened or how serious?  He's been a pleasant surprise this year
