Minor League Discussion

EP had a number of players lurking on the injured or inactive list so just juggled what they had. Not sure there was anyone (maybe the return of Ornelas) to call up at this point. If they did then a domino effect of who moves up from LE then up from ACL Maybe they look at the full string of needed moves and are waiting until they are comfortable up and down the line.

Guessing seeing some moves in the middle of June / late June ... but few who are earning a promotion but maybe some may get pushed up (or release) by some lower players the Padres want to promote.

I'm looking more at the .379 OBP and the .897 OPS and 37 Steals for a leadoff hitter....along with "70" hits in 55 games.

This kids scored 41 runs in those 55 games.

He also has 29 XBH's......18 2B's,6 3B's and 5 HR's

Too bad he isn't closer cause a leadoff hitter that can get on base and run like the wind is one of the things this team desperately needs....and has for years.

Obviously I'm not saying he would have those same numbers in MLB but if he keeps progressing he may be that guy.

Unless he's traded for a Closer at the deadline that is......lol

Very encouraged by what Wideman has done so far this year at Lake Elsinore in only 249 plate appearances but concur with Fenn that we need to see more of him at the plate to determine whether or when he is ready for a promotion to Fort Wayne - definitely not San Antonio, a very difficult hitters park.

Closer examination of Wideman's stats indicate a modest walk rate, 6.4%, so his OBP is mainly fueled by his BA thanks to a BABIP of .374.  While he has 18 doubles and 6 triples, he only has 5 HRs, which indicates that these extra-base hits are attributed mainly to his excellent speed and not explosive hard hit rates.  Further, his contact rate is likely unsustainable at over 81%, which was the concern going into this season when his rate was less than 70% in his debut last year.  Padres have done a good job with making changes in his swing and he has taken well to those adjustments.

Agree that he could be a nice leadoff hitter, but needs to translate current success to the next level before we get too excited about him.  I personally think that Harvey is a better hitter than Wideman and the former will be a more valuable player for the Padres because of the position he plays.  Lake Elsinore is an exciting team to watch, even without Harvey and Fountain in the line-up, and they could soon be joined by some good hitting prospects on their ACL team likely after the draft in July.

Wouldn't rule out Wideman being traded - he's at least 3 years away from contributing at the major league level and Preller doesn't have too many chips to put in play.

I realize AJ wouldn’t move Wideman 2 levels….was mostly tongue in cheek due to our lack of offense or a decent leadoff hitter that can run.

That and hoping something positive will happen
