Ah ... lots o' promotions ...

http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/padres/sd-sp-padres-promote-hudson-potts-ty-france-20180809-story.html

The Padres appear to be fortifying San Antonio’s playoff push.

Pitching prospect Michel Baez and third baseman Hudson Potts moving from high Single-A Lake Elsinore to Double-A San Antonio highlight a flurry of minor league transactions Thursday.

San Antonio third baseman Ty France and infielder River Stevens have also been promoted to Triple-A El Paso, also in the thick of a playoff race, while right-hander Elliot Ashbeck has been sent from Lake Elsinore to San Antonio and left-hander Travis Radke is dropping down from the Texas League to the California League.

How about that?!

19 year old Potts already promoted to AA.

Talk about fast tracking.....we do need a 3B in San Diego sooner rather than later.

So, curious, is San Antonio short on position players?  Why would Paddack hit (though got RBI), then not return to the mound and then Diaz hit with one out in the 9th and bases loaded and down by 2 runs?

Should we be talking about Osvaldo Hernandez?

Yes!

Last night: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 SO, 85 pitches, 50 for strikes, 3 GOs, 6 FOs

For the season: down to 1.81 ERA so far over 20 starts and 104.2 IP this year

Clearly part of "the next wave" 🙂

For now YES. They (last I looked) had 14 pitchers and only 11 position players. The game did not have a DH so only 3 players on the bench (eventually Schulz did PH). Naylor and Van Gansen did not play .. not sure if just rest or minor injury. I guess with only 3 on the bench ... needed to preserve those bats until they were really needed.

Note: Allen played 1B.

Not only is it exciting that we have so many prospects in the top 100 and the #1 ranked system in baseball but looking at FW and below we have another dozen or so players who could easily become top 100 prospects already performing to that level.

Most definitely still another wave to come...and another draft picking in the top 5

Bases loaded with one out in the ninth and down by two wasn't really needed???

I guess the Padres are all in for moves .... Logan Allen to AAA to replace Nix as opposed to just some "second tier" prospect.

Jumping way ahead ... going to be a lot of good prospect arms between ML/AAA/AA next season ... some will of course implode ... but enough are around to form a high potential ML staff by the end of 2019 with the odd men out making for good trade chips to fill holes envisioned in 2020. (also keep in mind that if this winter will have a roster crunch for the 40 man to protect prospects ... winter of 2019-20 will get even more "dicey").

This is why I was not so worried if AJ had made a deal for Archer.

I "assumed" it would have been for prospects he doesn't feel will be playing everyday for us and would have

had the additional benefit of making room for those who he feels will.

We will need to make some prospect trades this off season or at next years deadline one way or another......

"prospect" trades OR "veteran" trades in the near term to make room for the prospects (since we are never sure which prospect actually develops into a ML talent).  Once the team settles into a contender status ... might then shift of "prospect" trades.

On this team will not get much in the veteran trades (except room on the 40 man for prospects) but in playing for the future ... that is not all that bad. Actually for this winter ... the 40 man issue will cause a lot of bodies we are familiar with be jettisoned ... but really none that will be of major benefit for the future while sit covering the "better" endangered prospects. The following winter may be more interesting.

Basically, getting to the point when they begin culling out all the 40 man bodies with no upside / future and replace them with as many prospects they can ... and see who survives as a Padre the jettison the failures to make room for the next wave of real prospects.

To that end ... might see trades of Yates and Stammen this winter (maybe coupled with some 25 man roster fodder like ... well just about anyone). Maybe multiple for a significant upgrade in one position or maybe just a pack of high ceiling A ball players to set up another wave in 3-4 years.
