He actually made a second start after that .... 2 scoreless innings ... but that was wiped off the books due to a sandstorm (I think) cancelled the game.

Quote from 84padres on August 4, 2018, 3:48 pmafter todays game against the Cubs it will be easy to make room on the 40 man roster by dropping Lockett , He appears to have nothing, can't get anyone out. I would much rather give Strahm another 3 inning start. I think Strahm could be a decent starter next year with limmted innings to build up his arm.

Thats correct, we have had a rough weather week out here this week. 2 Haboubs in 4 days, plus some rain following as well.

Quote from fenn68 on August 5, 2018, 3:17 pmQuantrill up to AAA ... bit of a surprise ... but scouts seem to think he has the "stuff" so maybe a greater challenge will move his development forward.
Probably also means Lockett stays up and gets another start plus now a better chance Kennedy gets the call for next Thursday (unless Lauer is eligible to return).

The report on Lockett that I got was more optimistic than this ...

Not overpowering, but a simple windup and accurate with his pitches … built for longetivity, sound fundamentals, average stuff … not great command, but he has all the pitches … 1 tough inning at Wrigley with the wind blowing out … ie. he pitched better than his line.

That's definitely more in line with reality. Lockett isn't ever gonna be a stud, but his stuff plays well. His fastball is around 93 with a little run, he's got a nice little change that fades away from lefties, and a decent curve. As that report says, his main issue is command. He just hasn't been precise enough in his outings. If he can hit his spots with more consistency, he's fully capable of being a back end/reserve starter kind of guy.

Quote from fenn68 on August 6, 2018, 10:52 amLockett is an interesting "bubble guy" for making roster decisions this winter. Only 24, so that is on his side but the Padres have a lot of prospects to protect and they will have a full 40 man roster at the end of the season (Ellis and Galvis go FA but Lamet, Cordero, and Dickerson come off the 60 day DL).
Lockett may have to show well for the remainder of 2018 to secure a safe spot in the pecking order. Guessing they will add at least another 6-7 non-roster prospects (arguably with better upside) and a SS via FA/trade ... those adds will cause an equal number to be traded / DFA'd. First few most will consider "easy" but getting down the list should be significantly more debatable.
This may be an interesting "upside" vs. "current performance" debate ... plus we need to keep in mind that they need to field a ML 25 man roster (with call-ups) out of the 40 man ... so need some balance between pitchers and position players and their positions.

Quote from sportwarrior on August 7, 2018, 11:37 amCal Quantrill sure responded nicely to the surprise promotion. 6ip, 7h, 2er, 4k. Here's to hoping he rights the ship and finds some control in AAA.
