Next season EL PASO should start (and certainly by mid-season) see quite an influx of the better pitching prospects on their roster along with some young hitters. The upper minors (AAA/AA) will have a ton of top pitching prospects while the Padres are likely to be needing arms on the ML side. Makes for a scenario of transition for the "old arms" leftover from 2018 to the prospect arms as 2019 progresses ... the prospects have a real opportunity to step up and get that ML slot next season.

Given the weak Padre starting staff (given the current mix) with Lauer and Lucchesi likely to return and hard to tell on Richard (under contract will be 36 on opening day) sets-up 2-3 competitive slots that, in my mind, should start going to prospects. The RP has some who could get bumped (maybe traded). Since Kennedy and Paddack have to be added to the 40 man (and both have been strong in 2018) I would not be surprised to see them make the Padres' roster to start 2019 setting up a AAA starting staff:

Allen - Nix - Quantrill - Diaz - then whoever survives among Perdomo, Rea, Lamet (if sufficiently recovered from TJ), veteran filler.

C    Allen (I expect Mejia to be the #2 catcher on the Padres to start the season)

1B  Naylor / Overstreet

2B Urias (might depend on how they clean out the ML 2B options with Pirela, Asuaje, Spangenberg ... all doing badly ... could see a flip with Asuaje)

SS Tatis

3B France

LF Cordero

CF Gettys (yes I know he is still offensively challenged but should get bumped anyway)

RF Reyes (unless they trade Renfroe in some deal ... 28 on opening day and "regressing" at the ML level)

Basically a very good chance that we see a rare AAA team that is prospect laden rather than a home for a string of AAAA players.
