Quote from Randy Manese on August 1, 2024, 5:34 amDifferent Jimenez - Ronaldys was traded not Ibrahyn; Ibrahyn was recently placed on the Restricted List so might have an issue with him. Also, please remove Pedro Martinez from prospect consideration - my bad. You could add Winyer Chourio and Johan Minaya to the RH prospects but they are mainly pitching long relief vice starting at this point in their young careers. All these guys I mentioned are way down in the Dominican Summer League and have a very very long way to go. Most signed for $10,000 or under and we'll see what happens to them over the next couple of years - extremely high attrition rate for pitchers.

Quote from Stergios on August 1, 2024, 6:46 amThanks Randy.
The first thing I thought when I looked at this trade (Jimenez for Perez) was James Shields for Tati. I’m terrified that the former becomes a star… 🫣

Quote from WindsorUK on August 1, 2024, 4:38 pmAnyone fancy a go at the top 5 SP in the minors right now? And what year they'll be in the show? Obviously not for us but just interested.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 1, 2024, 6:40 pmWay back in 2016, when he signed for a huge bonus, it was thought he was going to be the next superstar SP. He pitched relatively well in 2017 and 2018 but couldn't get past 65 IP due to a series of injuries which would plague him almost every year but this year. As a result of that, his total of 50 IP (MLB and PCL) are the most he's pitched since 2018 and even now, in his last 7 games pitched, he is starting to slip a little maybe because he's not used to that workload. I don't think he is ever going to be fully healthy and looks very limited in IP per year, therefore, it is not expected he will ever be tried as a SP again (unless it is as an opener in a bullpen game).
Jackson Wolf was reacquired by the Padres from the Pirates at the start of the 2024 season for minor league infielder Kervin Pichardo and put on the 40 man roster; he subsequently was optioned to El Paso. He has generally struggled greatly in EP as a SP (who doesn't) and recently has been moved to the bullpen and is doing a little better in that role. His lack of velocity likely rules him out as a future SP although he did make a start for the Padres last year and actually got a win.

Quote from Stergios on August 1, 2024, 7:20 pmRandy, why aren’t we giving Gabe Mosser a chance to start in the bigs? His AAA numbers seem to be good considering the pitching conditions there.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 1, 2024, 10:58 pmWhen you are fighting for a playoff spot, it doesn't seem the right time to bring up pitchers who have never graded out as top prospects. Mazur was the best we had based on his repertoire and maturity and, as you saw, he had great difficulty translating his success in the minor to that in the majors. Mosser has had decent results for pitching in El Paso but he only tops out at 90 with his FB. While he throws a sinker, curve and slider none of them are remarkable swing and miss pitches that would fool big leaguers consistently and if he has to come in with that below average FB, he likely will be ambushed.
Not dismissing Mosser for what he has done this year but don't see him in a starting spot anytime soon. I'm sure the Padres would have brought him up if they thought he was a solution to the #5 SP hole they had/have and no one seemed interested enough to trade for him at the trading deadline, did they, even those teams that are cellar dwellers. At this point in the season, too much of a risk to go with an inexperienced and unproven starter.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 2, 2024, 12:49 amBrandon Lockridge had a nice debut game for El Paso, going 3 for 3 (all singles) and 2 SBs. Has very good speed - too bad he's not a LH hitter. Rule 5 eligible so he's another guy that will probably protected on the 40 man when the time comes to do that.
