The Padres signed Carl Edwards Jr. to a minor league contract last month, and Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes that the veteran reliever is taking a new step in his career by working as a starting pitcher. The right-hander has a 4.91 ERA over 22 innings and six starts, throwing at least four innings and 80 pitches in each of his last three games.

Bradgley Rodriguez‘s meteoric rise continues as the hard-throwing righty, who had not thrown a competitive pitch in the U.S. entering the season, now reaches Double-A. The 20-year-old, who is the rare reliever with the makings of three plus pitches, has struck out 54 in 47 innings at the two Single-A affiliates this year.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 9, 2024, 9:55 amIf you look at the next tier of Padres pitching prospects, what you will see is that they all have greatly benefited from the tutoring of Thomas Eshelman, both last year in Lake Elsinore and this year at Ft. Wayne. Padres top 2 RP prospects, Francis Pena and Bradgley Rodriguez both blossomed under Eshelman. Baez, Haynes, Nett, Lowe, Whiting and Smeltz all can point to Eshelman for their marked improvement over last year (many coming back from injury) and progression this year. Got to keep this guy in the organization - he is the real deal as a pitching coach!

Baez is only 21 and has had success in high-A and in his first two starts in AA.
Btw, where’d this kid Francis Peña come from? Last week was the first time I ever heard of him.

Pena was an older signing out of the Dominican Republic in 2022. I've read that targeting overlooked older international players has become a point of emphasis. All of the big money goes to teenagers. There's good value to be found with guys who develop later. The Astros have been very successful at it. Pena is looking like a great find for us.
